Thermodynamic approach of supercontinuum generation

2009

International audience; This paper is aimed at providing an overview on recent theoretical and experimental works in which a thermodynamic description of the incoherent regime of supercontinuum generation has been formulated. On the basis of the wave turbulence theory, we show that this highly nonlinear and quasi-continuous-wave regime of supercontinuum generation is characterized by two different phenomena. (i) A process of optical wave thermalization ruled by the four-wave mixing effects: The spectral broadening inherent to supercontinuum generation is shown to result from the natural tendency of the optical field to reach its thermodynamic equilibrium state, i. e., the state of maximum n…

Diffraction management and sub-diffractive solitons in periodically driven Bose–Einstein condensates

2009

Abstract We theoretically investigate the diffraction management in Bose–Einstein condensates (BECs) in one- (1D), two- (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) geometries. The management technique is based on the superposition of harmonic lattices’ potentials moving at a common speed but in different directions, leading to a harmonic spatio-temporal modulation of the potential. In this way a reduction in, and eventually the disappearance of usual diffraction and emergence of fourth-order diffraction are achieved. We show sub-diffractive solitons in such a diffraction managed system and demonstrate their stability in 1D, 2D and 3D. In 2D and 3D cases we investigate diffraction management by lattices…

Dark spatial solitary waves in a cubic-quintic-septimal nonlinear medium

2017

We consider the evolution of light beams in nonlinear media exhibiting nonlinearities up to the seventh order wherein the beam propagation is governed by the cubic-quintic-septimal nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation. An exact analytic solution that describes dark solitary wave propagation is obtained, based on a special ansatz. Unlike the well-known $\text{tanh}$-profile dark soliton in Kerr media, the present one has a functional form given in terms of ``${\text{sech}}^{2/3}$''. The requirements concerning the optical material parameters for the existence of this localized structure are discussed. This propagating solitary wave exists due to a balance among diffraction, cubic, quintic, and s…

Diffusion stabilizes cavity solitons in bidirectional lasers

2009

We study the influence of field diffusion on the spatial localized structures (cavity solitons) recently predicted in bidirectional lasers. We find twofold positive role of the diffusion: 1) it increases the stability range of the individual (isolated) solitons; 2) it reduces the long-range interaction between the cavity solitons. Latter allows the independent manipulation (writing and erasing) of individual cavity solitons.

Vibrations of weakly coupled nanoparticles

2009

The vibrations of a coupled pair of isotropic silver spheres are investigated and compared with the vibrations of the single isolated spheres. Situations of both strong coupling and also weak coupling are investigated using continuum elasticity and perturbation theory. The numerical calculation of the eigenmodes of such dimers is augmented with a symmetry analysis. This checks the convergence and applicability of the numerical method and shows how the eigenmodes of the dimer are constructed from those of the isolated spheres. The frequencies of the lowest frequency vibrations of such dimers are shown to be very sensitive to the strength of the coupling between the spheres. Some of these mod…

Anisotropic exchange coupling in the Keggin derivative K8[Co2(D2O)(W11O39)] · n D2O

1998

Abstract 20 g of the fully deuterated title compound have been prepared in polycrystalline form and investigated by inelastic neutron scattering using both thermal and cold neutrons. Magnetic dimer excitations were observed and the energy-splitting pattern resulting from the exchange coupling within the Co 2+ dimer was determined. The coupling is highly anisotropic with the parameter values J =−2.24 meV and η =0.33 based on the effective coupling Hamiltonian H =−2J[S 1z S 2z +η(S 1x S 2x +S 1y S 2y )] . The anisotropy results mainly from the single-ion anisotropy of the Co 2+ ion in the distorted octahedral coordination.

Enumerating the Walecki-Type Hamiltonian Cycle Systems

2017

Let Kv be the complete graph on v vertices. A Hamiltonian cycle system of odd order v (briefly HCS(v)) is a set of Hamiltonian cycles of Kv whose edges partition the edge set of Kv. By means of a slight modification of the famous HCS(4n+1) of Walecki, we obtain 2n pairwise distinct HCS(4n+1) and we enumerate them up to isomorphism proving that this is equivalent to count the number of binary bracelets of length n, i.e. the orbits of Dn, the dihedral group of order 2n, acting on binary n-tuples.

Lagrangians, Hamiltonians and Noether’s Theorem

2015

This chapter is intended to remind the basic notions of the Lagrangian and Hamiltonian formalisms as well as Noether’s theorem. We shall first start with a discrete system with N degrees of freedom, state and prove Noether’s theorem. Afterwards we shall generalize all the previously introduced notions to continuous systems and prove the generic formulation of Noether’s Theorem. Finally we will reproduce a few well known results in Quantum Field Theory.

Polynomial method to study the entanglement of pure N-qubit states

2009

We present a mapping which associates pure N-qubit states with a polynomial. The roots of the polynomial characterize the state completely. Using the properties of the polynomial we construct a way to determine the separability and the number of unentangled qubits of pure N-qubit states.
