1.3 µm GaInNAs optically-pumped vertical cavity semiconductor optical amplifier
2003
A GaInNAs/GaAs vertical cavity semiconductor optical amplifier (VCSOA) is reported. This is believed to be the first monolithic VCSOA operating at 1.3 mum. Under continuous-wave optical pumping in a singlemode fibre coupled format, gain figures of up to 17.7 dB were achieved. Amplification with 12 GHz bandwidth, was obtained at 12.8 dB peak gain.

Ultrafast Carrier Redistribution in Single InAs Quantum Dots Mediated by Wetting-Layer Dynamics
2019
Optical studies of single self-assembled semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) have been a topic of intensive investigation over the past two decades. Due to their solid-state nature, their electronic and optical emission properties are affected by the particular crystal structure as well as many-body-carrier interactions and dynamics. In this work, we use a master equation for microstates (MEM) model to study the carrier capture and escape from single QDs under optical nonresonant excitation and under the influence of a two-dimensional (2D) carrier reservoir (the wetting layer). This model reproduces carrier dynamics from power-dependent and time-resolved microphotoluminescence experiments . Du…
Complex quantum state generation and coherent control based on integrated frequency combs
2019
The investigation of integrated frequency comb sources characterized by equidistant spectral modes was initially driven by considerations towards classical applications, seeking a more practical and miniaturized way to generate stable broadband sources of light. Recently, in the context of scaling the complexity of optical quantum circuits, these on-chip approaches have provided a new framework to address the challenges associated with non-classical state generation and manipulation. For example, multi-photon and high-dimensional states were to date either inaccessible, lacked scalability, or were difficult to manipulate, requiring elaborate approaches. The emerging field of quantum frequen…
Witnessing nonclassicality through large deviations in quantum optics
2019
Non-classical correlations in quantum optics as resources for quantum computation are important in the quest for highly-specialized quantum devices. The standard way to investigate such effects relies on either the characterization of the inherent features of sources and circuits or the study of the output radiation of a given optical setup. The latter approach demands an extensive description of the output fields, but often overlooks the dynamics of the sources. Conversely, the former discards most of the information about the single trajectories, which are observed in experimental measurements. In this work we provide a natural link between the two frameworks by exploiting the thermodynam…
Exciting a Bound State in the Continuum through Multi-Photon Scattering plus Delayed Quantum Feedback
2019
Excitation of a bound state in the continuum (BIC) through scattering is problematic since it is by definition uncoupled. Here, we consider a type of dressed BIC and show that it can be excited in a nonlinear system through multi-photon scattering and delayed quantum feedback. The system is a semi-infinite waveguide with linear dispersion coupled to a qubit, in which a single-photon, dressed BIC is known to exist. We show that this BIC can be populated via multi-photon scattering in the non-Markovian regime, where the photon delay time (due to the qubit-mirror distance) is comparable with the qubit's decay. A similar process excites the BIC existing in an infinite waveguide coupled to two d…
Unveiling two-dimensional discrete quantum walks dynamics via dispersion relations
2011
The discrete, or coined, quantum walk (QW) [1] is a process originally introduced as the quantum counterpart of the classical random walk (RW). In both cases there is a walker and a coin: at every time step the coin is tossed and the walker moves depending on the toss output. Unlike the RW, in the QW the walker and coin are quantum in nature what allows the coherent superpositions right/left and head/tail happen. This feature endows the QW with outstanding properties, such as making the standard deviation of the position of an initially localized walker grow linearly with time t, unlike the RW in which this growth goes as t1/2. This has strong consequences in algorithmics and is one of the …
Spontaneous emission and energy shifts of a Rydberg rubidium atom close to an optical nanofiber
2020
In this paper, we report on numerical calculations of the spontaneous emission rates and Lamb shifts of a $^{87}\text{Rb}$ atom in a Rydberg-excited state $\left(n\leq30\right)$ located close to a silica optical nanofiber. We investigate how these quantities depend on the fiber's radius, the distance of the atom to the fiber, the direction of the atomic angular momentum polarization as well as the different atomic quantum numbers. We also study the contribution of quadrupolar transitions, which may be substantial for highly polarizable Rydberg states. Our calculations are performed in the macroscopic quantum electrodynamics formalism, based on the dyadic Green's function method. This allows…
Experimental demonstration of single-site addressability in a two-dimensional optical lattice
2009
We demonstrate single site addressability in a two-dimensional optical lattice with 600 nm lattice spacing. After loading a Bose-Einstein condensate in the lattice potential we use a focused electron beam to remove atoms from selected sites. The patterned structure is subsequently imaged by means of scanning electron microscopy. This technique allows us to create arbitrary patterns of mesoscopic atomic ensembles. We find that the patterns are remarkably stable against tunneling diffusion. Such micro-engineered quantum gases are a versatile resource for applications in quantum simulation, quantum optics and quantum information processing with neutral atoms.
Phonon-induced polariton superlattices
2006
We show that the coherent interaction between microcavity polaritons and externally stimulated acoustic phonons forms a tunable polariton superlattice with a folded energy dispersion determined by the phonon population and wavelength. Under high phonon concentration, the strong confinement of the optical and excitonic polariton components in the phonon potential creates weakly coupled polariton wires with a virtually flat energy dispersion.
