Control of Localization and Suppression of Tunneling by Adiabatic Passage

2004

We show that a field of frequency $\ensuremath{\omega}$ combined with its second harmonic $2\ensuremath{\omega}$ driving a double-well potential allows us to localize the wave packet by adiabatic passage, starting from the delocalized ground state. The relative phase of the fields allows us to choose the well of localization. We can suppress (and restore) the tunneling subsequently by switching on (and off) abruptly the fields at well-defined times. The mechanism relies on the fact that the dynamics is driven to an eigenstate of the Floquet Hamiltonian which is a localized state.

Freezing the dynamics of a rf SQUID qubit via its strong coupling to a quantized microwave field

2004

In this paper we show the results concerning the study of the dynamics of a rf SQUID qubit exposed to a quantized monochromatic microwave source in the strong coupling limit. We bring out more details of the possibility both of controlling and hindering the oscillations between the two qubit flux states when we consider opportunely prepared initial field states. The importance of conceiving of such kinds of theoretical schemes in view of possible applications in the context of quantum computing is briefly discussed.

Two-dimensional spectroscopy for the study of ion Coulomb crystals

2015

Ion Coulomb crystals are currently establishing themselves as a highly controllable test-bed for mesoscopic systems of statistical mechanics. The detailed experimental interrogation of the dynamics of these crystals however remains an experimental challenge. In this work, we show how to extend the concepts of multi-dimensional nonlinear spectroscopy to the study of the dynamics of ion Coulomb crystals. The scheme we present can be realized with state-of-the-art technology and gives direct access to the dynamics, revealing nonlinear couplings even in the presence of thermal excitations. We illustrate the advantages of our proposal showing how two-dimensional spectroscopy can be used to detec…

Integrated Generation of High-dimensional Entangled Photon States and Their Coherent Control

2017

Exploiting a frequency-domain approach, we demonstrate the generation of high-dimensional entangled quantum states with a Hilbert-space dimensionality larger than 100 from an on-chip nonlinear microcavity, and introduce a coherent control platform using standard telecommunications components.

Oscillations of the purity in the repeated-measurement-based generation of quantum states

2008

Repeated observations of a quantum system interacting with another one can drive the latter toward a particular quantum state, irrespectively of its initial condition, because of an {\em effective non-unitary evolution}. If the target state is a pure one, the degree of purity of the system approaches unity, even when the initial condition of the system is a mixed state. In this paper we study the behavior of the purity from the initial value to the final one, that is unity. Depending on the parameters, after a finite number of measurements, the purity exhibits oscillations, that brings about a lower purity than that of the initial state, which is a point to be taken care of in concrete appl…

Mechanism of decoherence-free coupling between giant atoms

2020

Giant atoms are a new paradigm of quantum optics going beyond the usual local coupling. Building on this, a new type of decoherence-free (DF) many-body Hamiltonians was shown in a broadband waveguide. Here, these are incorporated in a general framework (not relying on master equations) and contrasted to dispersive DF Hamiltonians with normal atoms: the two schemes are shown to correspond to qualitatively different ways to match the same general condition for suppressing decoherence. Next, we map the giant atoms dynamics into a cascaded collision model (CM), providing an intuitive interpretation of the connection between non-trivial DF Hamiltonians and coupling points topology. The braided c…

Generation of multipartite entangled states in Josephson architectures

2006

We propose and analyze a scheme for the generation of multipartite entangled states in a system of inductively coupled Josephson flux qubits. The qubits have fixed eigenfrequencies during the whole process in order to minimize decoherence effects and their inductive coupling can be turned on and off at will by tuning an external control flux. Within this framework, we will show that a W state in a system of three or more qubits can be generated by exploiting the sequential one by one coupling of the qubits with one of them playing the role of an entanglement mediator.

Nonlocal quantum-field correlations and detection processes in quantum-field theory

2009

Quantum detection processes in quantum field theory (QFT) must play a key role in the description of quantum-field correlations, such as the appearance of entanglement, and of causal effects. We consider the detection in the case of a simple QFT model with a suitable interaction to exact treatment, consisting of a quantum scalar field coupled linearly to a classical scalar source. We then evaluate the response function to the field quanta of two-level pointlike quantum model detectors, and analyze the effects of the approximation adopted in standard detection theory. We show that the use of the RWA, which characterizes the Glauber detection model, leads in the detector response to nonlocal …

Time-energy filtering of single electrons in ballistic waveguides

2019

Characterizing distinct electron wave packets is a basic task for solid-state electron quantum optics with applications in quantum metrology and sensing. A important circuit element for this task is a non-stationary potential barrier than enables backscattering of chiral particles depending on their energy and time of arrival. Here we solve the quantum mechanical problem of single-particle scattering by a ballistic constriction in an fully depleted quantum Hall system under spatially uniform but time-dependent electrostatic potential modulation. The result describes electrons distributed in time-energy space according to a modified Wigner quasiprobability distribution and scattered with an …
