The relevance of depressive symptoms for the outcome of patients receiving vitamin K antagonists: results from the thrombEVAL cohort study.

2020

Abstract Aims Although depressive symptoms are highly prevalent in patients receiving oral anticoagulation (OAC), the relevance of depression for the outcome of anticoagulated individuals is unknown. Methods and results We analysed data from the multicentre cohort study thrombEVAL (NCT01809015) investigating the efficacy of OAC with vitamin K antagonists. There was an independent study monitoring, and an independent review panel assessed the endpoints. Out of n = 1558 participants, information about depressive symptoms, as measured by the two-item screener of the patient health questionnaire (PHQ-2), was available in n = 1405 individuals. The mean follow-up period was 28.04 months, with a s…

Whole-body magnetic resonance imaging (WB-MRI) in oncology: an Italian survey.

2019

Purpose: To perform a survey among all members of the Italian Society of Medical and Interventional Radiology (SIRM) to assess how whole-body MRI (WB-MRI) is performed in oncologic patients in Italy. Methods: On March 2019, we administered an online poll to all SIRM members about their use of WB-MRI in 2018 asking 15 questions regarding oncologic indications, imaging protocol, use of contrast media, experience in WB-MRI, duration of scan time and reporting time. Results: Forty-eight members participated to the survey. WB-MRIs/total MRIs ratio was 1%. Lymphoma was the most common indication (17/48, 35%), followed by myeloma and prostate cancer, with these three tumors representing the most c…

Clinical Development of Mepolizumab for the Treatment of Severe Eosinophilic Asthma: On the Path to Personalized Medicine.

2021

The development of mepolizumab, an anti-IL-5 monoclonal antibody for the treatment of severe eosinophilic asthma, is an example of a clinical development program that evolved over time based on sound, basic scientific principles. Initial clinical data on the effects of mepolizumab on lung function in a general asthmatic population were disappointing. However, it became clear that mepolizumab may be more effective against other clinical endpoints, particularly asthma exacerbations, in patients with more severe disease. Furthermore, a developing understanding of asthma disease pathobiology led to the identification of an appropriate target population and predictive biomarker for mepolizumab t…

ObjectivesYoung age at school entry (ASE) for students has been related to their impaired mental health in higher grades. To avoid the negative health consequences of young ASE, preschool examinations and individual school entry deferral for young children are routinely performed by some school authorities. We aimed to investigate whether ASE was associated with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)-related symptoms in pupils attending schools using a selective school enrolment procedure.DesignProspective open cohort study with baseline assessments at school entry and two follow-ups in the second and fourth grades.SettingUp to 128 Rudolf Steiner Schools (Waldorf Schools) located w…

Triage assessment of registered nurses in the emergency department

2013

Standardised triage systems have been implemented in emergency departments (EDs) to improve the efficacy of assessment strategies as performed by registered nurses (RNs). However, the exact effect the standardised triage systems have on the decision-making process remains unclear.Aim: To evaluate decision making in the triage setting before and after implementation of the Medical Emergency Triage and Treatment System Adult in one hospital's ED.Methods: A descriptive intervention design with a quantitative approach. A total of 655 patients before and 413 patients after the intervention were included. A questionnaire was used to evaluate how the RNs assessed the patients before intervention w…

Late Breaking Abstract - Predictive value of FeNO in patients with non-specific respiratory symptoms: a randomised controlled trial

2017

Background: Fractional exhaled nitric oxide (FeNO) can predict treatment response in asthma, but little is known of its utility in patients with non-specific respiratory symptoms (NSRS). Aims and objectives: To evaluate the association between baseline FeNO and response to treatment with inhaled corticosteroids (ICS) in patients with NSRS. Methods: This was a multi-centre randomised, placebo-controlled trial, carried out in UK and Singapore. It consisted of a 2-week assessment period to establish baseline measurements and a 4-week treatment period with either extrafine ICS (200 µ beclomethasone bid) or placebo. NIOX VERO (Circassia) was used to measure baseline FeNO. The primary endpoint wa…

Monoprosthesis for simultaneous correction of stress urinary incontinence and cystocele: a 3-year follow-up.

2012

BACKGROUND Stress Urinary Incontinence (SUI) and cystocele can occur simultaneously because they have identical predisposing factors. This procedure reinforces pubourethral ligaments and the vesicovaginal fascia, solving SUI and Cystocele. METHODS 57 patients with grade III or higher cystocele were enrolled in this trial; SUI was present in 20% of patients (mean age: 57 years). NAZCA TC was used as monoprosthesis. Prolapse was evaluated using the POP-Q System, sexuality using the FSFI questionnaire, and LUTS using the OAB-SF questionnaire. RESULTS After surgery, there were positive changes, sustained during the follow-up: SUI was cured in 80% patients; there was only one patient with de nov…

Dentists' practice and compliance with current guidelines of infective endocarditis prophylaxis- National survey study

2021

Background The objective of this study was to assess the attitude, practice, and knowledge of Croatian dentists regarding infective endocarditis (IE) prophylaxis. Material and methods A cross-sectional, self-reporting questionnaire survey was conducted with the participation of 348 Croatian dentists. The questionnaire was designed to collect information on participants' work experience, place of work, their attitudes related to the treatment of IE-risk patients, knowledge and adherence to IE antibiotic prophylaxis guidelines. Results Knowledge and adherence to the current guidelines decreased with the higher years of experience. Compliance with the current guidelines varied, mostly because …

IMPACT OF CAROTID ENDARTERECTOMY ON COGNITIVE PERFORMANCE AND DEPRESSIVE SYMPTOMS

2016

OBJECTIVES: This study aims to evaluate the impact of carotid endarterectomy (CEA) on cognitive performance in patients with severe carotid disease and depressive symptoms, and to explore the possible associations between certain demographics, clinical characteristics, and cognitive function and depression. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study included 48 patients, who were referred for endarterectomy. Cognitive function was assessed using the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) scale, while depressive symptoms were assessed using the patient health questionnaire(PHQ-9) scale. An assessment of cognitive and depressive symptoms was performed 1–3 days before surgery, and then six months after. R…
