Supportive care services in hemato-oncology centers: a national survey
2016
Background: In the field of hemato-oncology, there is paucity of data assessing models of integration between hemato-oncology and other partner specialties. The aim of this national survey was to gather information about the status of the integration of this kind of activity in hemato-oncologic units existing in Italy. Methods: A national telephone survey was conducted to gather information about the status of the integration of hemato-oncologic and supportive care/anesthesiological services. From the national registry of hemato-oncology units, 149 centers were contacted by phone and a dedicated doctor was identified to gather information about the center through a telephone interview. Resu…
Second-hand smoke exposure in 4-year-old children in Spain: Sources, associated factors and urinary cotinine
2016
Introduction Second-hand smoke exposure (SHS) in children remains as a major pollution problem, with important consequences for children's health. This study aimed to identify the sources of exposure to SHS among 4-year-old children, comparing self-reports to a urinary biomarker of exposure, and characterize the most important variables related to SHS exposure in this population. Methods 4-year-old children's exposure to SHS was assessed by a parental-reported questionnaire and by urinary cotinine (UC) measurements in 1757 participants from 4 different areas of the Spanish INMA (INfancia y Medio Ambiente – Environment and Childhood) Project. The questionnaire about SHS included information …
Migraine headaches in adolescents: a student population-based study in Monreale.
1995
We assessed the prevalence of migraine headaches in an epidemiological survey of an 11 to 14-year-old student population. Migraine headaches were classified on the basis of questionnaires and neurological examination using the operational diagnostic criteria of the International Headache Society. Prevalence of migraine without aura (IHS code 1.1) was 2.35%; that of migraine with aura (IHS code 1.2) was 0.62%. Migraine without aura was equally distributed among males and females, whereas migraine with aura was preponderant in the female cohort. The prevalence of migraine headaches in males was constant through the ages studied, whereas the prevalence of migraine headaches in females reached…
How the presence of rhinoconjunctivitis and the severity of asthma modify the relationship between obesity and asthma in children 67 years old
2008
Summary Background The association between asthma and obesity in children, and the effect modification of allergy on this association have not been fully established. Aims The objective of the study was to know the effect modification of the severity of asthma and of the coexistence of rhinoconjunctivitis (RC) in the relationship between obesity and asthma. Methods A cross-sectional study of 17145 schoolchildren 6‐7 years old from eight Spanish cities who had completed information on height and weight of the ISAAC phase III questionnaire, which also included questions about asthma and RC symptoms and on various risk factors. Body mass index (BMI) was used to define obesity according to inte…
Incontinence and constipation in adolescent patients with anorexia nervosa : Results of a multicenter study from a German web-based registry for chil…
2019
OBJECTIVE: Nocturnal enuresis (NE), daytime urinary incontinence (DUI), and fecal incontinence (FI) are common disorders in childhood and are frequently accompanied by comorbid psychiatric disorders. Despite a high association between urinary and fecal incontinence with psychiatric and neurodevelopmental disorders, research on comorbidity between incontinence and anorexia nervosa (AN) remains scarce. Yet, it is well known that somatic consequences of AN include metabolic and gastrointestinal disorders. The study sought to assess the prevalence of incontinence and constipation in children and adolescents with AN and to examine associations of these two symptoms with body weight at admission …
Characterization of circadian COPD symptoms by phenotype: Methodology of the STORICO observational study
2017
Abstract Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality worldwide. The symptoms of COPD are troublesome, variable, can occur during all parts of the 24-h day and have a substantial impact on patients' health status, quality of life and healthcare resource utilization. Reducing symptoms, improving health status and increasing physical activity are major goals in the management of stable COPD. In order to provide effective, patient-oriented care, patients should be evaluated on the basis of lung function, frequency of symptoms and patient-perceived impact of symptoms on their lives and treatment decisions made on a case-by-case basis. The …
Adjusted population attributable fractions and preventable potential of risk factors for childhood obesity.
2007
AbstractObjectiveA number of individual risk factors for childhood obesity have been identified, but only some of these are amenable to prevention. To assess the amount of cases in a general population attributable to these risk factors, adjusted population-attributable fractions were estimated.DesignCross-sectional study.SettingObligatory school entry examination in 2001/2002 in six Bavarian communities (Germany).Subjects5472 children at age 5–6 years.MeasuresAnthropometric measures were ascertained by public health nurses, and measures concerning sociodemographics, lifestyle and child behaviour such as child's daily meal frequency were obtained with self-administered parental questionnair…
Prescription of anti-osteoporosis medications after hospitalization for hip fracture: a multicentre Italian survey.
2017
Purpose: Literature data indicate that the proportion of patients with recent hip fracture who receive a prescription for anti-osteoporotic drugs is low and does not seem to increase over time. This study aimed to obtain data on the prescription for anti-osteoporotic drugs in Italian patients discharged after a recent hip fracture and to assess which variables could have influenced the decision for prescribing osteoporosis medication. Methods: A total of four Italian centres located in four different geographical areas (Siena, Verona, Naples and Palermo) participated in this retrospective study. In each centre, experienced clinicians gathered the data of up to 200 consecutive patients disch…
The frequency of alcoholism in patients with advanced cancer admitted to an acute palliative care unit and a home care program
2015
Abstract Context Cancer patients with a history of alcoholism may be problematic. The frequency of alcoholism among patients with advanced cancer has never been reported in Italy or other European countries. Objectives The aim of this prospective study was to determine the frequency of alcoholism, assessed with a simple and validated instrument, among patients with advanced cancer who were referred to two different palliative care settings: an acute inpatient palliative care unit (PCU) of a comprehensive cancer center in a metropolitan area and a home care program (HCP) in a territorial district, localized in the mountains of Italy. Methods A consecutive sample of patients admitted to an in…
Association between general and oral health-related quality of life in patients treated for oral cancer
2015
Background Less is known about the association between general health-related quality of life (HRQoL) and oral HRQoL (OHRQoL) among patients with specific diseases. The aim of this study was to assess the association between patient-centered outcome measurements (HRQoL and OHRQoL) of oral cancer patients at least 6 months after treatment. Material and Methods HRQoL was measured with the 12-Item Short Form Health Survey (SF-12); OHRQoL was evaluated using the Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP-14) and the Oral Impacts on Daily Performances (OIDP). Results Higher OHRQoL scores were associated with lower SF-12 domains scores. The OHIP-14 explained 16.5 % of the total variance of SF-12 Physical C…
