About the Use of Tag Questions in Andean Spanish

2021

This paper aims to describe the use of tag questions in the variety of Andean Spanish spoken in Bolivia. In particular, it explores the tag questions that occur in the Corpus oral del español hablado por bilingües de aymara-español. The analysis consists of two levels. On the one hand, it describes the pragmatic functions of tag questions and identifies the correlation between their distribution and their pragmatic functions. On the other hand, it focuses on the impact that social factors (the speakers’ sex, age, and education) have on the frequency of the tags. Along these lines, it displays the lack of a general sociolinguistic trend in the use of tag questions, furthermore, it shows that…

Social capital management. A case study of the town of Racibórz

2021

For many years, social capital has been the subject of research in various areas and social environments. What is worth diagnosing is not so much its functioning or formation, but its management, i.e. deliberate development aimed at achieving individual or collective benefits. The cultural borderland region of the Racibórz area, especially the town, is a good case for an analysis of such phenomena, because, over the centuries, the town has been part of various administrative and economic regimes and thus has developed forms of social capital independent of state structures. The main research questions in this paper are the following: What remains of them today? Are they subject to managemen…

Patient Segmentation Based on Patient Loyalty

2018

The present study aims to perform a segmentation of patients based on their loyalty behaviour. The analysis focuses on Valencia, a region in Spain that features a capitated financing and free-elective framework; such a framework is particularly suitable for this type of study because patient loyalty directly affects the system’s budget and economic viability. Using secondary data from the regional health council, the study focuses on relationships of influence and latent segmentation in answering seven research questions. The two-pronged statistical analysis is designed to analyse relationships of influence, on the one hand, and latent segmentation, on the other. Significant differences we…

Does It Really Matter? Assessing the Performance Effects of Changes in Leadership and Management Structures in Nordic Higher Education

2019

AbstractUniversities are public organisations, which operate in a highly institutionalised environment. They are heavily dependent on public resources. As such, universities are susceptible to shifts in governance arrangements but are also far from being passive recipients of reform agendas. They face demands from multiple internal constituencies (academics, administrators, students, managers) and from a variety of external stakeholders. This chapter explores the interplay between governance arrangements resulting from policy shifts and university dynamics. It sets the stage for the book, asking the following research questions: (1) what characterises changes in governance regimes in Nordic…

Brancati su Pirandello e il pirandellismo

2019

In the short novel "Sogno di un valzer" published on "Quadrivio" from 5 June to 14 August 1938 Vitaliano Brancati enacts between observation of places and survey of customs a world beyond measure constantly hovering between reality and dream. In Caltanissetta (Nissa) the city in which the writer is the magistral institute turned his back on fascist Rome he came to teach unobtrusive insignificant characters who nevertheless covet desires racking their brains in metaphysical questions. Thus the leitmotiv of the critics of pirandellism takes shape which often with subtle irony emerges in the Brancatian writings. The essay shows how it intertwines with the sulphurous comedy of the writer of Don Giovanni in Sicilia who tracing a particular topography of the island supported by inner relief leads his analysis of eccentric behaviors and of the aberrations of the mind in which the trivialized Pirandellian thought ends to become an explosive element.

The human-computer connection: An overview of brain-computer interfaces

2018

This article introduces the field of brain-computer interfaces (BCI), which allows the control of devices without the generation of any active motor output but directly from the decoding of the user’s brain signals. Here we review the current state of the art in the BCI field, discussing the main components of such an interface and illustrating ongoing research questions and prototypes for controlling a large variety of devices, from virtual keyboards for communication to robotics systems to replace lost motor functions and even clinical interventions for motor rehabilitation after a stroke. The article concludes with some insights into the future of BCI.

A bibliometric review of takaful literature

2020

Abstract Takaful (Islamic Insurance) achieved only recently a significant volume of academic research, despite its importance in addressing the insurance needs of Islamic societies and economies. We provide a thorough analysis of existing contributions on Takaful through a meta-literature methodology encompassing both a bibliometric (quantitative) and content (qualitative) analysis. By reviewing 69 articles, we aim at providing a rigorous background for the Islamic finance industry, its societies and economies, academic research and policymakers. We identify and review three leading research streams on Takaful: its overview, growth paths and models; governance mechanisms; products/services …

Digital innovation & enterprise in the sharing economy: An action research agenda

2020

Abstract In this digital era, Digital Innovation & Enterprise have emerged as a possible prescription in the sharing economy. Scholars have noted that digital innovation is transforming the technological landscape, entrepreneurial practices, and the behaviours, attitudes, and beliefs of consumers across the globe. This research note serves three purposes. First, it introduces digital innovation and enterprise as a fruitful area of research in the sharing economy. Second, it extends the agenda set by Yoo, Henfridsson, and Lyytinen (2010) on “new organising logics of Digital Innovation” to propose contemporary research questions for scholarly collaboration. Third, it attempts to move forward …
