Geotextile sand containers (GSC) have been used as permanent construction elements in coastal works for more than 20 years,becoming more and more popular as an alternative to the most typical coastal structures. Aim of this work is to analyze the hydrodynamic, stability and morphodynamic response of a GSC submerged reef by means of an experimental campaign. Current rectification by nanoparticle blocking in single cylindrical nanopores.

Blocking of a charged pore by an oppositely charged nanoparticle can support rectifying properties in a cylindrical nanopore, as opposed to the usual case of a fixed asymmetry in the pore geometry and charge distribution. We present here experimental data and model calculations to confirm this fundamental effect. The nanostructure imaging and the effects of nanoparticle concentration, pore radius, and salt concentration on the electrical conductance–voltage (G–V) curves are discussed. Light scattering from single nanoparticles and nanostructures is a commonly used readout method for nanosensors. Increasing the spectral sensitivity of resonant nanosensors to changes in their local surrounding has been the focus of many studies. Switching from spectral to intensity monitoring allows one to investigate nonresonant or out-of-resonance dielectric nanoparticles. Here, we systematically compared such dielectric silica nanoparticles with plasmonic gold nanorods by deriving analytical expressions and by performing experiments. Marine CO2 seeps allow the study of the long-term effects of elevated pCO2 (ocean acidification) on marine invertebrate biomineralization. We investigated the effects of ocean acidification on shell composition and structure in four ecologically important species of Mediterranean gastropods (two limpets, a top-shell snail, and a whelk). Individuals were sampled from three sites near a volcanic CO2 seep off Vulcano Island, Italy. The three sites represented ambient (8.15 pH), moderate (8.03 pH) and low (7.73 pH) seawater mean pH. Ocean acidification may interfere with the calcifying physiology of marine bivalves. Therefore, understanding their capacity for acclimation and adaption to low pH over multiple generations is crucial to make predictions about the fate of this economically and ecologically important fauna in an acidifying ocean. Transgenerational exposure to an acidification scenario projected by the end of the century (i.e., pH 7.7) has been shown to confer resilience to juvenile offspring of the Manila clam, Ruditapes philippinarum. Abstract This study is a part of a research project in which we have been investigating the use of the ultrasonic pulse echo technique as a means of determining in vivo the facial/oral alveolar crest precisely and routinely. Here, RF-echograms are presented, showing the facial/oral periodontium of pigs. These echograms have been produced using a focussed 20 MHz transducer and a special design of an ultrasonic measuring and analysis system.
