The Intracranial Distribution of Gliomas in Relation to Exposure From Mobile Phones: Analyses From the INTERPHONE Study

When investigating the association between brain tumors and use of mobile telephones, accurate data on tumor position are essential, due to the highly localized absorption of energy in the human brain from the radio-frequency fields emitted. We used a point process model to investigate this association using information that included tumor localization data from the INTERPHONE Study (Australia, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Israel, Italy, Japan, New Zealand, Norway, Sweden, and the United Kingdom). Efficient generation of energetic ions in multi-ion plasmas by radio-frequency heating

We describe a new technique for the efficient generation of high-energy ions with electromagnetic ion cyclotron waves in multi-ion plasmas. The discussed ‘three-ion’ scenarios are especially suited for strong wave absorption by a very low number of resonant ions. To observe this effect, the plasma composition has to be properly adjusted, as prescribed by theory. We demonstrate the potential of the method on the world-largest plasma magnetic confinement device, JET (Joint European Torus, Culham, UK), and the high-magnetic-field tokamak Alcator C-Mod (Cambridge, USA). Humidity Sensing by Polymer-Loaded UHF RFID Antennas

Passive ultra high-frequency radio frequency identification tags, besides item labeling, are also able to exploit capability to sense the physical state of the tagged object as well as of the surrounding environment. Here, a new family of polymer-doped tags are proposed and fully characterized for the detection of ambient humidity. A sensitive chemical species based on PEDOT:PSS is used to load a shaped slot, carved into a folded-like patch tag. Implementation of the ERI standard and Evaluation of Applications with several low-cost technologies

The electronic registration and identification (ERI) systems allow carrying out a remote, secure and univocal identification of a vehicle through electronic devices. This paper presents the implementation of the ERI standard (ISO 24534 & 24535) in an API to develop applications. The implementation took into account the different components of the system to build the architecture of the identification system. Several applications have been developed in order to test this API with several low-cost technologies (Wifi, Bluetooth and RFID).

Simulation of H- ion source extraction systems for the Spallation Neutron Source with Ion Beam Simulator.

A three-dimensional ion optical code IBSimu, which is being developed at the University of Jyväskylä, features positive and negative ion plasma extraction models and self-consistent space charge calculation. The code has been utilized for modeling the existing extraction system of the H(-) ion source of the Spallation Neutron Source. Simulation results are in good agreement with experimental data. A high-current extraction system with downstream electron dumping at intermediate energy has been designed. The REX-ISOLDE project

REX-ISOLDE is a pilot experiment at ISOLDE/CERN to study the structure of neutron-rich nuclei (N=20, N=28) with post-accelerated radioactive ion beams (1). Therefore radioactive ions with charge state 1+, which are delivered by the online mass separator ISOLDE, are accelerated up to 2.2 MeV/u by means of a new concept. The radioactive ions are first accumulated in a Penning trap, then charge breeded to a charge-to-mass ratio of 1/4.5 in an Electron Beam Ion Source (EBIS) and finally accelerated. Sensitive laser spectroscopy on trapped barium ions by quenching with hydrogen

The sensitivity of laser spectroscopy on barium ions stored in a radio frequency quadrupole trap was drastically increased by using hydrogen for quenching the optically pumped metastable states. The attained fluorescence intensity per ion permits the detection of single ions. The method will be applied to environmental studies on actinides.
