Statistical methods for the comparison of measurements derived from orthodontic imaging

Biometric comparison procedures for dental imaging methods with continuous outcome were reviewed, mainly concentrating on assessment and comparison of accuracy and precision according to the study design. Univariate graphical and numerical representations of corresponding deviations were summarized to derive a 'check list' of minimum information necessary to compare the measurement methods. Cone-beam computed tomography and its applications in dental and maxillofacial radiology.

Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) was first used in dental and maxillofacial radiology (DMFR) at the end of the 1990s. Since then, it has been successfully established as the standard three-dimensional radiographic imaging technique in DMFR, with a wide variety of applications in this field. This manuscript briefly reviews the background information on the technology and summarises available data on effective dose and dose optimisation. In addition, typical clinical applications and indications of the technique in DMFR are presented.

OBJECTIVES: To develop a simple way to compute the approximated modulation transfer function (MTF) manually using conventional spreadsheet software. METHODS: Basing on an edge-image a method was developed, facilitating computation of the edge spread and line spread function in open-source spreadsheet software (Gnumeric; http://projects.gnome.org/gnumeric/downloads.shtml). By means of the integrated fast Fourier transformation Fourier coefficients are obtained from the line spread function which can then be plotted vs spatial frequency to obtain MTF-plots. Visual knowledge processing in computer-assisted radiology: A consultation system

This paper presents Visual Heuristics, a consultation system for diagnosis based on thorax radiograph recording. Visual Heuristics uses both prototypical representations of physiological and pathological states and reasoning aimed to infer conclusions from pathological or physiological conditions, establishing correspondences between pathological or physiological states and semantic descriptions of images. Images are assembled with groups of descriptors that guide the recognition process, achieving the possibility of comparisons with real images on the basis of 'expected' images. The system may be employed to generate a dynamic atlas that does not contain proper images, but generates them.

Objectives To develop an automated procedure to detect patient motion on the projection images acquired during a cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) scan and to evaluate the method's feasibility on small real-world CBCT images in relation to visual assessment. Contrast perception in digitized panoramic radiographs compared with their film-based origin

Abstract Objectives. We sought to compare the visual image quality of film-based and digitized panoramic radiographs through use of a hole-containing test wedge. Study Design. An aluminum wedge containing 100 cells, of which 90 were given shallow holes, was exposed in the film-based Orthophos CD panoramic unit. Two radiographs subjectively exhibiting optimum contrast were selected. Films were digitized with a charge-coupled device flatbed scanner at 300 dpi. Mammographic images segmentation based on chaotic map clustering algorithm

Background: This work investigates the applicability of a novel clustering approach to the segmentation of mammographic digital images. The chaotic map clustering algorithm is used to group together similar subsets of image pixels resulting in a medically meaningful partition of the mammography. Prevalence of anatomical variants and coronary anomalies in 543 consecutive patients studied with 64-slice CT coronary angiography

The aim of our study was to assess the prevalence of variants and anomalies of the coronary artery tree in patients who underwent 64-slice computed tomography coronary angiography (CT-CA) for suspected or known coronary artery disease. A total of 543 patients (389 male, mean age 60.5 +/- 10.9) were reviewed for coronary artery variants and anomalies including post-processing tools. The majority of segments were identified according to the American Heart Association scheme. The coronary dominance pattern results were: right, 86.6%; left, 9.2%; balanced, 4.2%.
