The Clinical Efficacy of Radium-223 for Bone Metastasis in Patients with Castration-Resistant Prostate Cancer: An Italian Clinical Experience.

2017

Background/Aim: Prostate cancer frequently causes bone metastases and skeletal events that impair quality of life (QoL) and survival. The alpha emitter radium-223 is a new drug that improves treatment in men with castration-resistant prostate cancer (CRPC) and bone metastases. Our aim was to evaluate the effectiveness of radium-223. Subjects and Methods: In this retrospective study we enrolled 48 subjects. Pain reduction, alkaline phosphatase (ALP), time to first symptomatic skeletal event, and QoL were the variables we evaluated. Results: Radium-223 was well tolerated, with a m…

A radiometric and petrographic approach to risk assessment at Alte Madonie Mounts region (Sicily, Italy)

2013

The main goal of this work was to assess the radiological hazard at Alte Madonie Mounts region (north-central Sicily, Italy) in response to rumours of an increase in the incidence of cancer in this area. A correlation between the natural radionuclide contents and the petrographic features of the soil and rock samples was also evaluated. A total of 41 samples of selected soils and rocks were collected, powdered, dried and sealed in 'Marinelli' beakers for 20 d prior to measurement to ensure that a radioactive equilibrium between (226)Ra and (214)Bi had been reached. A gamma-ray spectrometer was used to quantify the radioactivity concentrations. To determine (238)U and (232)Th activities, the…

Spectroscopy of short-lived radioactive molecules: A sensitive laboratory for new physics

2019

The study of molecular systems provides exceptional opportunities for the exploration of the fundamental laws of nature and for the search for physics beyond the Standard Model of particle physics. Measurements of molecules composed of naturally occurring nuclei have provided the most stringent upper bounds to the electron electric dipole moment to date, and offer a route to investigate the violation of fundamental symmetries with unprecedented sensitivity. Radioactive molecules - where one or more of their atoms possesses a radioactive nucleus - can contain heavy and deformed nuclei, offering superior sensitivity for EDM measurements as well as for other symmetry-violating effects. Radium …

Radium ionization scheme development: The first observed autoionizing states and optical pumping effects in the hot cavity environment

2018

© 2018 The Authors This paper reports on resonance ionization scheme development for the production of exotic radium ion beams with the Resonance Ionization Laser Ion Source (RILIS) of the CERN-ISOLDE radioactive ion beam facility. During the study, autoionizing states of atomic radium were observed for the first time. Three ionization schemes were identified, originating from the 7s2 1S0 atomic ground state. The optimal of the identified ionization schemes involves five atomic transitions, four of which are induced by three resonantly tuned lasers. This is the first hot cavity RILIS ionization scheme to employ optical pumping effects. The details of the spectroscopic studies are described …

Gamma activity and geochemical features of building materials: estimation of gamma dose rate and indoor radon levels in Sicily.

2001

A high-purity germanium detector has been used to measure the abundance of radium (Ra), thorium (Th) and potassium (K) in building materials used in Sicilian dwellings. The measurements were performed to evaluate which material was suitable for the construction of an enclosure, which would have a low background emission. The materials examined in this work showed concentrations of 226Ra, 232Th and 40K dramatically variable depending on the lithologies, particularly in the case of blocks, sands and aggregates commonly used in building materials in Sicily. The results are discussed and a criterion is indicated to reduce the radiation dose to humans. Since radon inlet is a major health problem…

Overall survival in mCPRC patients treated with Radium-223 in association with bone health agents: a national multicenter study

2020

Radium-223 has demonstrated efficacy in improving overall survival (OS) and in delaying symptomatic skeletal-related events (SREs). Bone Health Agents (BHA), i.e. RANK ligand inhibitor (Denosumab) and bisphosphonate such as zoledronic acid, are indicated to prevent SREs without a clear survival benefit. SREs on patient health have a high impact and it is, therefore, important to consider the role of new therapies with BHA to better understand the involvement of combination therapy. The primary aim of this multicentric study is to assess OS in mCRPC patients treated with Radium-223 in combination with BHA.430 consecutive patients treated with Radium-223 alone or in combination with BHA, affe…

Radium-223 in mCPRC patients: a large real-life Italian multicenter study

2020

Background Radium-223 is a targeted alpha-particles therapy approved for the treatment of mCRPC patients with symptomatic bone metastases. To our knowledge we account for the largest cohort of mCRPC patients subjected to Radium-223 treatment in our country. We aim to describe in a real-life setting the largest cohort of mCRPC patients treated with Radium-223 ever taken into consideration. Methods 430 consecutive mCRPC patients were enrolled. Clinical data have been collected at baseline and at the end of the Radium-223 treatment. Furthermore, the overall survival(OS) of our population has been provided. Results 157 patients (36.5%) were still alive at the time of data analysis. A mean numbe…

Primary Radical Prostatectomy or Ablative Radiotherapy as Protective Factors for Patients With mCRPC Treated With Radium-223 Dichloride: An Italian M…

2020

Abstract Background We investigated, in a real-life setting, the prognostic relevance of previous primary treatment (radical prostatectomy [RP] or external beam radiotherapy [EBRT]) on overall survival for patients with metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer (mCRPC) treated with radium-223 (223Ra). Materials and Methods In the present multicenter retrospective study, we enrolled 275 consecutive patients. The demographic and clinical data and mCRPC characteristics were recorded and evaluated at baseline and at the end of treatment or progression. 223Ra was administered according to the current label authorization until disease progression or unacceptable toxicity. We divided the who…

Prognostic role of inflammatory biomarkers from peripheral blood and clinical factors in metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer (mCRPC) pati…

2021

e17026 Background: Ra-223 is a treatment option for mCRPC pts with bone metastases according to the survival benefit observed compared to placebo in the ALSYMPCA trial. In the last years, many studies showed this benefit in the real-life pts is lower than that reported in the trial, probably due to a suboptimal selection of pts with poor prognostic characteristics. Therefore, the identification of prognostic factors to select mCRPC pts most likely to benefit from Ra-223 is needed. The multicentre retrospective BIO-Ra-223 study has investigated the prognostic role of peripheral blood immune cells and clinical factors to develop a novel prognostic score for mCRPC pts treated with Ra-223. Met…
