The Epithelial Mesenchymal Transition Process in Wilms Tumor

2011

Background Until now, only a few mouse-transplanted human tumors or experimental Wilms tumor (WT) cell lines have been described. The aim of this study was to show the biological behavior, including histology, immunohistochemistry (IHC), and molecular biology, of a WT including the original tumor and metastasis transferred into nude mice and followed for successive generations in xenografts. Methods A WT metastasis was xenotransplanted into nude mice and the mice was monitored for 7 passages over a period of 29 months; the original neoplasm was comparatively studied. The morphology was evaluated by optical and electron microscopy. The protein expression was analyzed by immunohistochemistry …

Grafting of Hindered Phenol Groups onto Ethylene/α-Olefin Copolymer by Nitroxide Radical Coupling

2017

The covalent immobilization of hindered phenol groups, with potential antioxidant activity, onto an ethylene/α-olefin (EOC) copolymer was carried out by the nitroxide radical coupling (NRC) reaction performed in the melt with a peroxide and the 3,5-di-tert-butyl-4-hydroxybenzoyl-2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyl radical (BHB-T). Functionalized EOC (EOC-g-(BHB-T)) was exposed to photo- and thermo-oxidation. By comparison with some model compounds bearing the (2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidin-1-yl)oxyl (TEMPO) moiety or the hindered phenol unit, it was observed that the grafted BHB-T could effectively help the stabilization of the polymer matrix both under photo- and thermo-oxidation. In addit…

On prefix normal words and prefix normal forms

2016

A $1$-prefix normal word is a binary word with the property that no factor has more $1$s than the prefix of the same length; a $0$-prefix normal word is defined analogously. These words arise in the context of indexed binary jumbled pattern matching, where the aim is to decide whether a word has a factor with a given number of $1$s and $0$s (a given Parikh vector). Each binary word has an associated set of Parikh vectors of the factors of the word. Using prefix normal words, we provide a characterization of the equivalence class of binary words having the same set of Parikh vectors of their factors. We prove that the language of prefix normal words is not context-free and is strictly contai…

Alternative Financing of SMEs in the Baltic States: Myth or Reality?

2014

Abstract Alternative financing for small business can help companies whose owners can’t get traditional financing resources as small business loans, overdrafts and personal credit cards. New companies typically seek alternative financing when their companies have not been in business long enough to establish credit profiles with financial institutions. Access to alternative financing together with traditional financial resources represents one of the most significant challenges for new SMEs not only in the Baltic States but all over the world. Ensurance of new SMEs creation, existence and growth asks understanding of SMEs’ financing needs and alternative funding is one of them. Alternative …

Autonomous on-board data processing and instrument calibration software for the SO/PHI

2018

The extension of on-board data processing capabilities is an attractive option to reduce telemetry for scientific instruments on deep space missions. The challenges that this presents, however, require a comprehensive software system, which operates on the limited resources a data processing unit in space allows. We implemented such a system for the Polarimetric and Helioseismic Imager (PHI) on-board the Solar Orbiter (SO) spacecraft. It ensures autonomous operation to handle long command-response times, easy changing of the processes after new lessons have been learned and meticulous book-keeping of all operations to ensure scientific accuracy. This contribution presents the requirements a…

Caveolin 3, flotillin 1 and influenza virus hemagglutinin reside in distinct domains on the sarcolemma of skeletal myofibers.

2011

We examined the distribution of selected raft proteins on the sarcolemma of skeletal myofibers and the role of cholesterol environment in the distribution. Immunofluorescence staining showed that flotillin-1 and influenza hemagglutinin exhibited rafts that located in the domains deficient of the dystrophin glycoprotein complex, but the distribution patterns of the two proteins were different. Cholesterol depletion from the sarcolemma by means of methyl-β-cyclodextrin resulted in distorted caveolar morphology and redistribution of the caveolin 3 protein. Concomitantly, the water permeability of the sarcolemma increased significantly. However, cholesterol depletion did not reshuffle flotillin…

Aircraft-based operation of an aerosol mass spectrometer: Measurements of tropospheric aerosol composition

2006

The Aerodyne quadrupole aerosol mass spectrometer was deployed on the Falcon twin jet research aircraft operated by Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt (DLR). This was the first deployment of an AMS in a jet aircraft. Aerosol mass concentration measurements in the troposphere up to altitudes of about 11 km were performed within two measurement flights on 12 and 14 May 2003 over southern Germany. Background aerosol data were gained up to 6 km, while aircraft exhaust aerosol was be sampled at higher altitudes on 14 May, indicating the presence of sulfuric acid and unburned hydrocarbons in the exhaust particles. The boundary layer aerosol on 12 May was found to be composed of 49% organic…

Hyaluronan-Based Graft Copolymers Bearing Aggregation-Induced Emission Flurogens

2017

In order to develop a technology platform based on two natural compounds from biorenewable resources, a short series of hyaluronan (HA) copolymers grafted with propargylated ferulic acid (HA-FA-Pg) were designed and synthesized to show different grafting degree values and their optical properties were characterized in comparison with reference compounds containing the same ferulate fluorophore. Interestingly, these studies revealed that the ferulate fluorophore was quite sensitive to the restriction of intramolecular motion and its introduction into the rigid HA backbone, as in HA-FA-Pg graft copolymers, led to higher photoluminescence quantum yield values than those obtained with the isola…

Factors affecting flavor perception in space: Does the spacecraft environment influence food intake by astronauts?

2020

International audience; The intention to send a crewed mission to Mars involves a huge amount of planning to ensure a safe and successful mission. Providing adequate amounts of food for the crew is a major task, but 20 years of feeding astronauts on the International Space Station (ISS) have resulted in a good knowledge base. A crucial observation from the ISS is that astronauts typically consume only 80% of their daily calorie requirements when in space. This is despite daily exercise regimes that keep energy usage at very similar levels to those found on Earth. This calorie deficit seems to have little effect on astronauts who spend up to 12 months on the ISS, but given that a mission to …
