Grafting of hyperbranched polymers: From unusual complex polymer topologies to multivalent surface functionalization
2013
Abstract In this feature article, the grafting of hyperbranched polymers to different substrates is reviewed. Both grafting onto macromolecules with different topologies (homogeneous grafting) and the resulting complex polymer architectures containing highly branched segments as well as their applications are discussed. In the second part grafting of hyperbranched polymers on surfaces, i.e., planar surfaces and spherical particles (heterogeneous grafting), with respect to specific applications, such as bio-repellent surfaces or soluble carbon nanotubes is described. In all cases, the one-step synthesis and the resulting highly branched topology of the hyperbranched building blocks is benefi…
The Influence of PRP on Early Bone Formation in Membrane Protected Defects. A Histological and Histomorphometric Study in the Rabbit Calvaria
2011
Background: Platelet rich plasma (PRP) has been proposed to be a useful adjunct to bone grafting. Purpose: The aim of the present study was to assess new bone formation in bone regeneration procedures using platelet rich plasma (PRP) alone or in combination with autogenous bone. Materials and Methods: Four surgically created, monocortical defects 5 mm in diameter in the calvariae of 15 New Zealand rabbits were grafted with a coagulum-filled control, PRP, particulated autogenous bone alone (A), or combined with PRP (A-PRP). Results: Mean platelet concentration of 1,761,930 ± 680,200/µl was achieved (5.30 ± 2.63 × fold of baseline). Animals were sacrificed 1, 2, and 4 weeks later. Histomorpho…
Grafted Rods: A Tilting Phase Transition
1996
A tilting phase transition is predicted for systems comprising rod like molecules which are irreversibly grafted to a flat surface, so that the non interacting rods are perpendicularly oriented. The transition is controlled by the grafting density $\rho$. It occurs as $\rho$ increases as a result of the interplay between two energies. Tilt is favoured by the van-der-Waals attraction between the rods. It is opposed by the bending elasticity of the grafting functionality. The role of temperature is discussed, and the tilting mechanism is compared to other tilting transitions reported in the literature.
Legislative provisions in context: a linguistic approach
2016
The paper takes into consideration legislative provisions from a linguistic point of view. It applies tests of language in a number of texts belonging to the common law drafting practice to ascertain a loss of conceptual focus by legislative drafters and concludes that linguistics can provide a method by which drafters can assess the effectiveness of their draft.
Legislative Drafting and Language: Legal Language in Context
2016
A word, when used in a piece of text, usually denotes only one meaning out of the multiple meanings it is inherently capable of bearing. The general observation is that it is the context that determines which meaning of the word should be considered. This observation, as a logical consequence, leads us to identify the context responsible for meaning variation of a word. The general view is that the identification of context depends heavily on intuitive abilities of a language user. One way to facilitate the achievement of the important goal of ensuring that legislation is interpreted as the drafter intended is clearly to make legislative drafters more aware of the linguistic aspects of thei…
A Linguistic Insight into the Legislative Drafting of English-Speaking Jurisdictions
2020
Gender specificity in legislation started being questioned in the late 20th century, and the need to reform the way in which laws have been written for more than onehundred years has been particularly evident in English-language jurisdictions. In the 1990s and 2000s, the adoption of a plain English style forced legislative drafters to avoid sentences of undue length, superfluous definitions, repeated words and gender specificity with the aim of achieving clarity and minimizing ambiguity. Experts in the legal field have suggested reorganizing sentences, avoiding male pronouns, repeating the noun in place of the pronoun, replacing a nominalization with a verb form, resorting to ‘the singular …
Development of polymer-based nanoparticles for Zileuton delivery to the lung : PMeOx and PMeOzi surface chemistry reduces interactions with mucins
2021
In this paper, two amphiphilic graft copolymers were synthesized by grafting polylactic acid (PLA) as hydrophobic chain and poly(2-methyl-2-oxazoline) (PMeOx) or poly(2-methyl-2-oxazine) (PMeOzi) as hydrophilic chain, respectively, to a backbone of α,β-poly(N-2-hydroxyethyl)-D,L-aspartamide (PHEA). These original graft copolymers were used to prepare nanoparticles delivering Zileuton in inhalation therapy. Among various tested methods, direct nanoprecipitation proved to be the best technique to prepare nanoparticles with the smallest dimensions, the narrowest dimensional distribution and a spherical shape. To overcome the size limitations for administration by inhalation, the nano-into-micr…

Utilization of Poly(vinylchloride) and Poly(vinylidenefluoride) as Macroinitiators for ATRP Polymerization of Hydroxyethylmethacrylate. Electroanalyt…
2015
The utilization of poly(vinylchloride) (PVC) and poly(vinylidenefluoride) (PVDF) as macroinitiators for atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) of hydroxyethylmethacrylate (HEMA) was studied performing electroanalytical investigations and “grafting from” experiments in order to achieve information on the possibility of modifying such commercial polymers by this controlled free radical polymerization technique. This study was performed changing various operating parameters such as the nature of the copper salt, the ligand, the solvent, the temperature and the reaction time. Electroanalytical data suggest that PVC can be easily activated by both CuCl/ Tris(2-pyridylmethyl)amine (TPMA) and…
When Functionalization of PLA Surfaces Meets Thiol−Yne Photochemistry: Case Study with Antibacterial PolyaspartamideDerivatives
2014
International audience; In this work we wish to report on the covalent functionalization of polylactide (PLA) surfaces by photoradical thiol–yne to yield antibacterial surfaces. At first, hydrophilic and hydrophobic thiol fluorescent probes are synthesized and used to study and optimize the conditions of ligation on alkyne-PLA surfaces. In a second part, a new antibacterial polyaspartamide copolymer is covalently grafted. The covalent surface modification and the density of surface functionalization are evaluated by SEC and XPS analyses. No degradation of PLA chains is observed, whereas covalent grafting is confirmed by the presence of S2p and N1s signals. Antiadherence and antibiofilm acti…
