HAWC J2227+610 and its association with G106.3+2.7, a new potential Galactic PeVatron

2020

We present the detection of VHE gamma-ray emission above 100 TeV from HAWC J2227+610 with the HAWC observatory. Combining our observations with previously published results by VERITAS, we interpret the gamma-ray emission from HAWC J2227+610 as emission from protons with a lower limit in their cutoff energy of 800 TeV. The most likely source of the protons is the associated supernova remnant G106.3+2.7, making it a good candidate for a Galactic PeVatron. However, a purely leptonic origin of the observed emission cannot be excluded at this time.

Constraints on Minute-Scale Transient Astrophysical Neutrino Sources

2019

High-energy neutrino emission has been predicted for several short-lived astrophysical transients including gamma-ray bursts (GRBs), core-collapse supernovae with choked jets, and neutron star mergers. IceCube's optical and x-ray follow-up program searches for such transient sources by looking for two or more muon neutrino candidates in directional coincidence and arriving within 100 s. The measured rate of neutrino alerts is consistent with the expected rate of chance coincidences of atmospheric background events and no likely electromagnetic counterparts have been identified in Swift follow-up observations. Here, we calculate generic bounds on the neutrino flux of short-lived transient so…

The Gaia-ESO Survey: Dynamics of ionized and neutral gas in the Lagoon nebula (M 8)

2017

Aims. We present a spectroscopic study of the dynamics of the ionized and neutral gas throughout the Lagoon nebula (M 8), using VLT-FLAMES data from the Gaia-ESO Survey. The new data permit exploration of the physical connections between the nebular gas and the stellar population of the associated star cluster NGC 6530. Methods. We characterized through spectral fitting emission lines of Hα, [N II] and [S II] doublets, [O III], and absorption lines of sodium D doublet, using data from the FLAMES-Giraffe and UVES spectrographs, on more than 1000 sightlines toward the entire face of the Lagoon nebula. Gas temperatures are derived from line-width comparisons, densities from the [S II] doublet …

Gaia-ESO Survey: Gas dynamics in the Carina nebula through optical emission lines

2016

Aims. We present observations from the Gaia-ESO Survey in the lines of Hα, [N II], [S II], and He I of nebular emission in the central part of the Carina nebula. Methods. We investigate the properties of the two already known kinematic components (approaching and receding), which account for the bulk of emission. Moreover, we investigate the features of the much less known low-intensity high-velocity (absolute RV >50 km s) gas emission. Results. We show that gas giving rise to Hα and He I emission is dynamically well correlated with but not identical to gas seen through forbidden-line emission. Gas temperatures are derived from line-width ratios, and densities from [S II] doublet ratios. Th…

Laboratory unraveling of matter accretion in young stars

2017

When matter accretes onto a young star, a shell of dense material can form around the impact, reducing its x-ray emission.

Rational normal curves and Hadamard products

2021

AbstractGiven $$r>n$$ r > n general hyperplanes in $$\mathbb P^n,$$ P n , a star configuration of points is the set of all the n-wise intersection of the hyperplanes. We introduce contact star configurations, which are star configurations where all the hyperplanes are osculating to the same rational normal curve. In this paper, we find a relation between this construction and Hadamard products of linear varieties. Moreover, we study the union of contact star configurations on a same conic in $$\mathbb P^2$$ P 2 , we prove that the union of two contact star configurations has a special h-vector and, in some cases, this is a complete intersection.

The aroma of strawberry (Fragaria ananassa): Characterisation of some cultivars and influence of freezing

1990

The volatiles of six strawberry (Fragaria ananassa Duch) cultivars, both fresh and deep-frozen, were isolated by direct dichloromethane extraction. Sixty compounds were identified and quantified by GC—MS. Characterisation of cultivars was achieved by applying principal component analysis to the chromatographic data. Great differences were observed. Maxim and Directeur Paul Wallbaum are rather low in volatiles while Gariguette and Tioga are rich in mesifurane (2,5-dimethyl-4-methoxy-2,3-dihydrofuran-3-one), furaneol' (2,5-dimethyl-4-hydroxy-2,3-dihydrofuran-3-one) and nerolidol. Esters are the major compounds in Senga Sengana and Vicomtesse Hericart de Thury. This last cultivar is also chara…

Can Primordial Black Holes as all Dark Matter explain Fast Radio Bursts?

2021

Primordial black holes (PBHs) are one of the most interesting nonparticle dark matter (DM) candidates. They may explain all the DM content in the Universe in the mass regime from about $10^{-14}M_{\odot}$ to $10^{-11}M_{\odot}$. We study PBHs as the source of fast radio bursts (FRBs) via magnetic reconnection in the event of collisions between them and neutron stars (NSs) in galaxies. We investigate the energy loss of PBHs during PBH-NS encounters to model their capture by NSs. To an order-of-magnitude estimation, we conclude that the parameter space of PBHs being all DM is accidentally consistent with that to produce FRBs with a rate which is the order of the observed FRB rate.

MOJAVE. X. Parsec-Scale Jet Orientation Variations and Superluminal Motion in AGN

2013

We describe the parsec-scale kinematics of 200 AGN jets based on 15 GHz VLBA data obtained between 1994 Aug 31 and 2011 May 1. We present new VLBA 15 GHz images of these and 59 additional AGN from the MOJAVE and 2 cm Survey programs. Nearly all of the 60 most heavily observed jets show significant changes in their innermost position angle over a 12 to 16 year interval, ranging from 10 deg to 150 deg on the sky, corresponding to intrinsic variations of ~0.5 deg to ~2 deg. The BL Lac jets show smaller variations than quasars. Roughly half of the heavily observed jets show systematic position angle trends with time, and 20 show indications of oscillatory behavior. The time spans of the data se…
