Influence of compliance for an elastokinematic model of a proposed rear suspension
2014
The research is carried out to improve passenger’s comfort to increase the vehicles stability in dynamic conditions. The literature available in the automotive engineering considers different topics for studying suspensions. An example represents mechanisms structure and analysis (synthesis, kinematics, and dynamics) under various operating conditions. These aspects have been approached before analytically, numerical. The current paper studies the influence of the lateral force on the contact patch of the wheel and the corresponding variations of vehicle stability parameters, such as camber angle and wheel rear track. The study is performed for a newer innovative rear suspensions mechanism …

FRIPON: a worldwide network to track incoming meteoroids
2020
Context. Until recently, camera networks designed for monitoring fireballs worldwide were not fully automated, implying that in case of a meteorite fall, the recovery campaign was rarely immediate. This was an important limiting factor as the most fragile - hence precious - meteorites must be recovered rapidly to avoid their alteration. Aims. The Fireball Recovery and InterPlanetary Observation Network (FRIPON) scientific project was designed to overcome this limitation. This network comprises a fully automated camera and radio network deployed over a significant fraction of western Europe and a small fraction of Canada. As of today, it consists of 150 cameras and 25 European radio receiver…

Adaptive Finite-Time Control for a Flexible Hypersonic Vehicle with Actuator Fault
2013
The problem of robust fault-tolerant tracking control is investigated. Simulation on the longitudinal model of a flexible air-breathing hypersonic vehicle (FAHV) with actuator faults and uncertainties is conducted. In order to guarantee that the velocity and altitude track their desired commands in finite time with the partial loss of actuator effectiveness, an adaptive fault-tolerant control strategy is presented based on practical finite-time sliding mode method. The adaptive update laws are used to estimate the upper bound of uncertainties and the minimum value of actuator efficiency factor. Finally, simulation results show that the proposed control strategy is effective in rejecting unc…
Network Arches: The World's Lightest Arch Bridges
2012
Summary Network arches have a tensile and a compressive flange with a web consisting of crossing hangers. Some of the hangers cross each other twice. The network can be seen as a very light, simply supported beam. There is little bending. There is a lot of tension in tie and hangers. The arches are well supported by hangers and wind bracing. Thus the buckling strength of the arch is high as long as few hangers relax. That is easiest to prevent when a concrete tie gives extra weight in the tie. The optimal shape of network arches is discussed. In two lane and two track network arches the biggest bending in the tie is usually the transverse bending half way between the arches. The optimal sha…
Electromagnetic optimization of passive RFID sensor nodes
2012
RFID passive tags are nowadays starting to be considered more than labeling devices: by properly analyzing the two-ways communication link it is possible to get information about the state of a tagged object, without any specific embedded sensor or local power supply. Despite of the generality and the straightforwardness of the approach, the design of such a class of devices requires specific strategies to make the radio-sensors able to properly track the evolution of the phenomena under observation, jointly optimizing communication and sensing requirements. In this paper the optimization problem is formalized by means of convenient matching charts and evaluated in realistic experimental ex…
An Object-Oriented Approach to Discrete-Event Simulation Applied to Underground Railway Systems
1999
This paper describes the implementation of an object-oriented simulator that supports the determination of timetables and the design of on-line control policies for underground rail way systems. The simulator has been developed on the basis of a new approach to object- oriented modelling. Such an approach has been used to design a development tool that supports the generation of simulation codes and is able to automatically define the skeleton of a code.
Keeping Track of Samples in Multidisciplinary Fieldwork
2021
We here present methods, tools and results for efficiently collecting metadata and tracking samples collected in the field. The samples and metadata were collected during scientific cruises conducted by amongst others marine biologists, oceanographers, geochemists and marine geologists in the Nansen Legacy project. It is here reported on the successful development and implementation of a system for labeling, tracking and openly publishing metadata from the cruises. The results and tools have been made openly available, as they are suitable for a range of situations, from the individual scientist working in the field to large research missions.
Tramway Track: A New Approach for Measuring the Transverse Profile of Worn-Out Rails
2012
Abstract Monitoring the wear condition of the tramway superstructure is one of the key points to guarantee an adequate safety level of the light rail transport system. The purpose of this paper is to suggest a new non-conventionalprocedure for measuring the transverse profile of rails in operation by means of image-processing technique. This methodological approach is based on the “information” contained in high-resolution photographic images of tracks and on specific algorithms which allow to obtain the exact geometric profile of the rails and therefore to measure the state of the rail-head extrados wear.
