Comparing soil inventory with modelling: Carbon balance in central European forest soils varies among forest types

Abstract Forest soils represent a large carbon pool and already small changes in this pool may have an important effect on the global carbon cycle. To predict the future development of the soil organic carbon (SOC) pool, well-validated models are needed. We applied the litter and soil carbon model Yasso15 to 1838 plots of the German national forest soil inventory (NFSI) for the period between 1985 and 2014 to enables a direct comparison to the NFSI measurements. Abstract The use of pesticides in households and peri-urban areas of the Amazon has increased notably during the last years. Yet, the presence of these contaminants in Amazonian freshwater ecosystems remains unexplored. Here, we assessed the exposure to 18 pesticides and 5 transformation products in the Amazon River and in the urban streams of Manaus, Santarem, Macapa, and Belem (Brazil). Summary Anthropogenic forest fragmentation and other kinds of human disturbance, such as selective logging, can reduce the diversity of plant and animal species. To evaluate the impact of fragmentation and small-scale disturbance on forest regeneration, we assessed species richness and total abundance of adult trees in comparison with seedlings in the heavily fragmented and disturbed Kakamega Forest, western Kenya. In nine differently disturbed 1-ha study blocks distributed across the main forest and fragments, we mapped all trees >10 cm in diameter at breast height. Reviewing some important German scientists who have developed climatic regionalization schemes either on a global or Chinese scale, their various definitions of the tropical climate characteristics in China are discussed and compared with Huang Bingwei’s climate classification scheme and the identification of the tropical climate therein. It can be seen that, due to different methodological approaches of the climatic regionalization schemes, the definitions of the tropics vary and hence also their spatial distribution in China. Tropical Andean forest derives calcium and magnesium from Saharan dust

[1] We quantified base metal deposition to Amazonian montane rain forest in Ecuador between May 1998 and April 2003 and assessed the response of the base metal budget of three forested microcatchments (8–13 ha). There was a strong interannual variation in deposition of Ca [4.4–29 kg ha−1 a−1], Mg [1.6–12], and K [9.8–30]). High deposition changed the Ca and Mg budgets of the catchments from loss to retention, suggesting that the additionally available Ca and Mg was used by the ecosystem.
