In contrast to recent reinforcements of Europe's internal and external borders due to the refugee situation on the Mediterranean and the Covid-19 outbreak, talk of European borders has in the past decades focused on the freedom of mobility guaranteed by the Schengen treaty. In many senses, free intra-European mobility has become a recited truth in the EU discourse: a phrase that hides under its repetition the gap between its implied content and empirical realities of many of those who are affected by European borders’ exclusive tendencies. Observation of a superfluid component within solid helium

We demonstrate by neutron scattering that a localized superfluid component exists at high pressures within solid helium in aerogel. Its existence is deduced from the observation of two sharp phonon-roton spectra which are clearly distinguishable from modes in bulk superfluid helium. These roton excitations exhibit different roton gap parameters than the roton observed in the bulk fluid at freezing pressure. One of the roton modes disappears after annealing the samples. Comparison with theoretical calculations suggests that the model that reproduces the observed data best is that of superfluid double layers within the solid and at the helium-substrate interface. peerReviewed
Communicative memory of irregular migration: The re-circulation of news images on YouTube

This article analyses user-generated YouTube cut and mix videos of irregular migration as producing communicative memory of those who have suffered at Europe’s external borders. Visual and textual analyses examine a neglected perspective on the study of media representations of migration by examining a particular practice through which people engage with news images and participate in (re)construction of collective memory in relation to irregular migration. Käsittelemme artikkelissa suomalaisten nykytaiteilijoiden reaktioita vuoden 2015 ”pakolaiskriisiin” taiteellisen aktivismin näkökulmasta. Analysoimme kolmea teosta, Lauri Ahtisen Elias-sarjakuvaromaania (2018), Minna Rainion ja Mark Robertsin lyhytelokuvaa They Came in Crowded Boats and Trains (2017) ja Riiko Sakkisen näyttelyä Rajat kiinni (2017). Tulkitsemme teoksia poeettisena aktivismina, jolla taiteilijat pyrkivät vaikuttamaan yleisöön taiteen omien esteettisin keinoin.
