Flying-Related Concerns among Airline Customers in Finland and Sweden during COVID-19

2022

COVID-19 hit the global economy hard in early 2020, and airline industry was among the biggest commercial victims. Governments closed borders, the virus scared off travelers and the aircraft stayed on the ground to a large extent. The forecasted record year turned out to be the worst in the history of aviation. This study focused on the concerns of airline customers and analyzed the differences between the customer behavior in two focus markets, Finland and Sweden. The article is based on a questionnaire and the answers of 2004 airline customers. The results show that even though the overall COVID-19 strategy was very different between the focus markets, the same concerns still arose. The m…

Governing the Pandemic in Finland and Estonia

2020

In this article, we analyze the management and political implications of COVID-19 in two small countries located at the EU’s north-eastern border: Finland and Estonia. Culturally, ethnically, and linguistically, they share a common Finno-Ugrian identity. Politically, both are parliamentary republics run by coalition governments. They were among the first countries in Europe to reopen borders for travel in June 2020 after almost three months of lockdown. Both exhibited the lowest curves of viral spread in relation to the population among countries in the wider area. As they faced the pandemic, we saw that the exceptional measures they swiftly took did not diminish the democratic legitimacy o…

Use of walking modifications, perceived walking difficulty and changes in outdoor mobility among community-dwelling older people during COVID-19 rest…

2021

Abstract Background Outdoor mobility enables participation in essential out-of-home activities in old age. Aim To compare changes in different aspects of outdoor mobility during COVID-19 restrictions versus two years before according to self-reported walking. Methods Community-dwelling participants of AGNES study (2017–2018, initial age 75–85) responded to AGNES-COVID-19 postal survey in spring 2020 (N = 809). Life-space mobility, autonomy in participation outdoors, and self-reported physical activity were assessed at both time points and differences according to self-reported walking modifications and difficulty vs. intact walking at baseline were analyzed. Results Life-space mobility and …

Individual and shared digital repertoires : older adults managing digital services

2023

The rise of public and other non-recreational digital services is based on the idea of catering to the daily needs of the citizens cost-efficiently and with ease. Previous research has approached the use of digital services mainly from the perspective of an individual, while the significance of shared practices of use has attracted only a little attention. In this article, we (1) examine the incentives and limitations associated with the use of non-recreational digital services, which either encourage or discourage older adults to use them. Based on the first question, we then ask (2) how older adults in this study manage those non-recreational digital services they have chosen to use. Our …

Older adults’ activity destinations before and during COVID-19 restrictions: From a variety of activities to mostly physical exercise close to home

2021

The aim was to study various types of older adult's activity destinations (counts, frequency of visitation, and distance from home) in the pre-COVID-19 era, and to study prospectively how COVID-19-related regulations limiting mobility affected these. Using a map-based questionnaire, 75-85-year-old participants reported activity destinations, that is, any destinations for physical exercise, destinations facilitating one's outdoor mobility, and destinations for other activities, which they had visited several times during the past month. At baseline, a variety of activity destinations was reported, but during COVID-19, destinations reported markedly declined in number, they were reported pred…

Trait self-control and self-discipline : Structure, validity, and invariance across national groups

2021

The aim of the present study was to test the validity of the Brief Self-Control Scale (BSCS; Tangney, Baumeister and Boone 2004) including its dimensional structure based on competing one- and two-factor models, discriminant validity from the conceptually-related self-discipline construct, invariance across multiple samples from different national groups, and predictive validity with respect to health-related behaviors. Samples of undergraduate students (total N = 1282) from four national groups completed the brief self-control scale, the self-discipline scale from the NEO-PI-R, and self-report measures of binge drinking, exercise, and healthy eating. Confirmatory factor analytic models sup…

Serving for state and industry by doing nothing but practice and play : Football shamateurism in East Germany, Hungary and Romania

2022

This presentation aims at discussing the opportunities and limitations of football players in East Germany, Hungary and Romania in the period between the end of World War II (1945) and the collapse of the Eastern bloc (1989). Football served as an important propaganda tool for the communist regimes in Eastern Europe. Therefore, the political elites supported football players financially with sinecures in the military, police, and in commercial and industrial companies, as well as by releasing them for training and competitions in their associated clubs. Their status as “shamateurs” granted them privileges in socialist societies over common people but also limited their possibilities to deve…

Fyysisen kunnon yhteys niskakivun ja niskan toiminnanrajoitusten ilmaantumiseen

2010

Tutkimuksen tarkoituksena oli selvittää ennustaako huono kuntotestien tulos niskakipuja tai niskan toiminta-kyvyn rajoitusten ilmaantumista kahdeksan vuoden seurannassa keski-ikäisellä väestöllä. Tuloksissa on esitetty myös yhteydet poikkileikkausasetelmassa. Tutkimukseen kutsuttiin 826 henkilöä, joista osallistui 498. Heille tehtiin UKK-terveyskuntotestit. Tutkimukseen hyväksyttiin mukaan vain ne, joilla ei ollut alkutilanteessa (v. 1993 ja/tai 1996) niskakipuja eikä sen aiheuttamia toiminnan rajoituksia (n=286). Heistä 83% vastasi niskaa koskevaan seurantakyselyyn (n=237) vuonna 2004. Kyselylomakkeella selvitettiin itse arvioitu niskan ja hartia-alueen toimintakyky ja kipu. Kysymykset oli…

Kotona asuvien 60 vuotta täyttäneiden ihmisten yksinäisyys koronapandemian aikana

2022
