Pressure effects on the vibrational properties of alpha-Bi2O3: an experimental and theoretical study

2014

We report an experimental and theoretical high-pressure study of the vibrational properties of synthetic monoclinic bismuth oxide (alpha-Bi2O3), also known as mineral bismite. The comparison of Raman scattering measurements and theoretical lattice-dynamics ab initio calculations is key to understanding the complex vibrational properties of bismite. On one hand, calculations help in the symmetry assignment of phonons and to discover the phonon interactions taking place in this low-symmetry compound, which shows considerable phonon anticrossings; and, on the other hand, measurements help to validate the accuracy of first-principles calculations relating to this compound. We have also studied …

A quantum-chemical study of the structure, vibrations and SiH bond properties of disilylamine, NH(SiH3)2.

2002

Quantum-chemical calculations at HF, MP2 and B3LYP levels with 6-31G* and 6-311G** basis sets are reported for disilylamine, NH(SiH3)2. The equilibrium structure is found to vary with both level and basis set, all but one of the structures exhibiting a small lack of planarity of the HNSi2 system. The barrier to inversion, however, is found to be very low, at most 38 cm(-1). Vibration frequencies and intensities are calculated. The frequencies are scaled, where possible, either using updated infrared data or with the aid of factors transferred from N(CH3)(SiH3)2. Unobserved frequencies due to the v(s)NSi2, deltaNSi2 and delta(perpendicular)NH modes are predicted near 610, 210 and 360 cm(-1),…

Broadband, site selective and time resolved photoluminescence spectroscopic studies of finely size-modulated Y2O3:Eu3+ phosphors synthesized by a com…

2014

Undoped and Eu3+-doped cubic yttria (Y2O3) nanophosphors of good crystallinity, with selective particle sizes ranging between 6 and 37 nm and showing narrow size distributions, have been synthesized by a complex-based precursor solution method. The systematic size tuning has been evidenced by transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and Raman scattering measurements. Furthermore, size-modulated properties of Eu3+ ions have been correlated with the local structure of Eu3+ ion in different sized Y2O3:Eu3+ nanophosphors by means of steady-state and time-resolved site-selective laser spectroscopies. Time-resolved site-selective excitation measurements performed in the 7F0 ¿ 5D0 peak…

Discerning the Origins of the Amplitude Fluctuations in Dynamic Raman Nanospectroscopy

2012

International audience; We introduce a novel experimental and analytical method for discerning rare surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) events observable at the nanoscale. We show that the kinetics of the Raman activity recorded on an isolated nanostructure is punctuated by intense and rare events of large amplitude and spectral variations. The fluctuations of thousands of SERS spectra were analyzed statistically in terms of power density functions, and the occurrence of the rare events was quantified by a wavenumber statistics. Our analysis enables one to extract valuable and unique spectroscopic signature of Raman variations usually hidden in time-average or space-average measurement…

Raman spectra of vacancy-containing LiF: Predictions from first principles

2020

Abstract The electronic structure and Raman scattering from face-centered cubic LiF with three types of vacancies — an F-center, an F ′ -center and a vacancy without electrons ( v F ) — has been calculated by means of hybrid exchange–correlation functional within density functional theory. Our modeling predicts the effective charge of 0.87 e , 1.50 e and 0.10 e on the defect, respectively. The F-center induces two in-gap energy levels for two spin states split by 3.4 eV, while the F ′ -center and the v F induce a single in-gap level 3.8 eV and 2.9 eV below the bottom of conduction band, respectively. The calculated Raman spectra are thoroughly discussed and are found to match well the earli…

Spin Polarization of Electrons by Resonance Scattering from Mercury

1980

Hg- compound ion states formed by electron impact with neutral mercury atoms at collision energies of 4.55, 4.71, 4.94, and 5.51 eV show up in the 2S1/2, 2D3/2, 2D5/2, and 2D5/2 scattering states in order of increasing energy. This identification is supported by the observed energy dependence of (i) elastic (e-, Hg) differential cross section, of (ii) 63P0 excitation of mercury by electron impact, and of (iii) spin polarization of electrons scattered elastically from mercury.

Control processes for stimulated Raman scattering in optical fibers by dual-frequency pumping

1998

We pointed out that with nondegenerate frequency, and orthogonally polarized pump waves, the SRS may be suppressed in one of the axes of a highly birefringent fiber either via a four wave mixing (FWM) parametric process, or through the orthogonal component of the Raman nonlinearity.

Collisions between similaritons in optical fiber amplifiers

2009

We consider the self-similar amplification of two optical pulses of different wavelengths in order to investigate the effects of a collision between two similaritons. We theoretically demonstrate that similaritons are stable against collisions in a Raman amplifier: similaritons evolve separately in the amplifier without modification of the scaling of their temporal width and chirp and by conserving their velocities, only interact during their overlap and regain their parabolic form after collision. We show both theoretically and experimentally that the collision of two similaritons induces a sinusoidal modulation inside the overlap region, whose frequency decreases during the interaction. T…

Generation and characterization of 06-THz polarization domain-wall trains in an ultralow-birefringence spun fiber

2007

Polarization domain-wall (PDW) trains have been generated at a repetition rate of 0.6 THz in an ultralow-birefringence spun optical fiber and measured by use of an adapted frequency-resolved optical gating technique. Characterization of the intensity and the phase of the PDW train shows complete switching between adjacent domains of counterrotating circular polarizations and directly confirms predictions based on numerical simulations of the incoherently coupled nonlinear Schrödinger equations.

Demonstration of Stimulated-Raman-scattering suppression in optical fibers in a multifrequency pumping configuration

1999

International audience; We analyze the stimulated-Raman-scattering-(SRS) process induced by a linearly polarized multifrequency pump field in a normally dispersive single-mode fiber. We show, by theoretical analysis and numerical simulations, that the SRS process may be either controlled by switching all the generated Stokes radiations to the lowest-frequency pump or suppressed for all the frequency components of the pump field. The suppression process is achieved by an appropriate choice of the frequency separation between the pumps and a particular power distribution among the frequency components of the pump field. We present experimental spectra showing the effectiveness of this suppres…
