The beneficial effects of therapeutic craniofacial massage on quality of life, mental health and menopausal symptoms and body image: A randomized con…

2020

Abstract Objective The objective of this study was to determine the effect of massage in the craniofacial area in menopausal women after the treatment and one month after its completion, and to measure its influence on quality of life in relation to symptoms of menopause, mental health, and body image perception. Design 50 participants with menopause, aged 45–65 years, participated in a single-blind randomized controlled trial. Participants were randomly assigned to two groups: craniofacial massage group (CMG), who received massage treatment (n = 25), and control group (CG), without treatment (n = 25). Prior to randomization, all participants provided demographic and clinical information. Q…

Is it possible to change of the duration of consolidation period in the distraction osteogenesis with the repetition of extracorporeal shock waves?

2016

Background In this study we examined the effects of two different repeated Extracorporeal Shock Waves (ESW) on the consolidation period of the distraction osteogenesis (DO) of the rabbit mandible using stereological, radiological and immunohistochemical methods. Material and Methods DO was performed unilaterally in the mandible of 18 New Zealand rabbits (six months old, weighing between 2.5-3 kg). In the consolidation period, rabbits were divided into three groups randomly after the distraction period. The distraction zone of the mandible was received no treatment as controls (E0*2). Group 2 (E 500*2) received ESWT (twice 500 impulses at 14 kV and 0.19 mJ/mm2 energy) in the first and fourth…

Direct lookup and hash-based metadata placement for local file systems

2013

New challenges to file systems' metadata performance are imposed by the continuously growing number of files existing in file systems. The total amount of metadata can become too big to be cached, potentially leading to multiple storage device accesses for a single metadata lookup operation. This paper takes a look at the limitations of traditional file system designs and discusses an alternative metadata handling approach, using hash-based concepts already established for metadata and data placement in distributed storage systems. Furthermore, a POSIX compliant prototype implementation based on these concepts is introduced and benchmarked. A variety of file system metadata and data operati…

Development of a Novel Object Detection System Based on Synthetic Data Generated from Unreal Game Engine

2022

This paper presents a novel approach to training a real-world object detection system based on synthetic data utilizing state-of-the-art technologies. Training an object detection system can be challenging and time-consuming as machine learning requires substantial volumes of training data with associated metadata. Synthetic data can solve this by providing unlimited desired training data with automatic generation. However, the main challenge is creating a balanced dataset that closes the reality gap and generalizes well when deployed in the real world. A state-of-the-art game engine, Unreal Engine 4, was used to approach the challenge of generating a photorealistic dataset for deep learnin…

Effect of Physical Activity Counseling on Disability in Older People: A 2-Year Randomized Controlled Trial

2008

OBJECTIVES: To study the effect of a physical activitycounseling intervention on instrumental activity of dailyliving (IADL) disability.DESIGN: Primary care–based, single-blind, randomizedcontrolled trial.SETTING: City of Jyva¨skyla¨, central Finland.PARTICIPANTS: Six hundred thirty-two people aged 75to 81 who were able to walk 500 meters without assistance, were at most moderately physically active, had a Mini-Mental State Examination score greater than 21, had nomedical contraindications for physical activity, and gaveinformed consent for participation.INTERVENTION: A single individualized physical activitycounseling session with supportive phone calls from a physio-therapist every 4 month…

Everolimus With Reduced Tacrolimus Improves Renal Function in De Novo Liver Transplant Recipients: A Randomized Controlled Trial

2012

In a prospective, multicenter, open-label study, de novo liver transplant patients were randomized at day 30±5 to (i) everolimus initiation with tacrolimus elimination (TAC Elimination) (ii) everolimus initiation with reduced-exposure tacrolimus (EVR+Reduced TAC) or (iii) standard-exposure tacrolimus (TAC Control). Randomization to TAC Elimination was terminated prematurely due to a higher rate of treated biopsy-proven acute rejection (tBPAR). EVR+Reduced TAC was noninferior to TAC Control for the primary efficacy endpoint (tBPAR, graft loss or death at 12 months posttransplantation): 6.7% versus 9.7% (-3.0%; 95% CI -8.7, 2.6%; p<0.001 for noninferiority [12% margin]). tBPAR occurred in…

Renal Function at Two Years in Liver Transplant Patients Receiving Everolimus: Results of a Randomized, Multicenter Study

2013

In a 24-month prospective, randomized, multicenter, open-label study, de novo liver transplant patients were randomized at 30 days to everolimus (EVR) + Reduced tacrolimus (TAC; n = 245), TAC Control (n = 243) or TAC Elimination (n = 231). Randomization to TAC Elimination was stopped prematurely due to a significantly higher rate of treated biopsy-proven acute rejection (tBPAR). The incidence of the primary efficacy endpoint, composite efficacy failure rate of tBPAR, graft loss or death postrandomization was similar with EVR + Reduced TAC (10.3%) or TAC Control (12.5%) at month 24 (difference -2.2%, 97.5% confidence interval [CI] -8.8%, 4.4%). BPAR was less frequent in the EVR + Reduced TAC…

Induction Therapy with Idarubicin, Ara-C, and VP-16, Followed by G-CSF and Maintenance Immunotherapy with Interleukin-2 for High-Risk AML

1996

Aggressive chemotherapy followed by administration of G-CSF and maintenance therapy with interleukin-2 was evaluated in 16 patients with advanced myelodxysplastic syndrome, 47 patients with AML evolving from myelodysplastic syndromes, 3 patients with subacute myeloid leukemia and 5 patients with secondary AML. Median age was 59 years (range: 23 to 76 years). All patients achieving a complete remission (CR) after two induction courses went on to receive two consolidation courses, to be followed by randomization to either high-dose or low-dose IL-2 to evaluate the potential of IL-2 to eliminate residual leukemic cells and to prolong the duration of CR. Patients ≤ age 55 with an HLA identical …

Plasma HDL cholesterol and risk of myocardial infarction: a mendelian randomisation study

2012

BACKGROUND: High plasma HDL cholesterol is associated with reduced risk of myocardial infarction, but whether this association is causal is unclear. Exploiting the fact that genotypes are randomly assigned at meiosis, are independent of non-genetic confounding, and are unmodified by disease processes, mendelian randomisation can be used to test the hypothesis that the association of a plasma biomarker with disease is causal. METHODS: We performed two mendelian randomisation analyses. First, we used as an instrument a single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) in the endothelial lipase gene (LIPG Asn396Ser) and tested this SNP in 20 studies (20,913 myocardial infarction cases, 95,407 controls). Se…
