Study on the Effects of Pseudorandom Generation Quality on the Performance of Differential Evolution

Experiences in the field of Monte Carlo methods indicate that the quality of a random number generator is exceedingly significant for obtaining good results. This result has not been demonstrated in the field of evolutionary optimization, and many practitioners of the field assume that the choice of the generator is superfluous and fail to document this aspect of their algorithm. In this paper, we demonstrate empirically that the requirement of high quality generator does not hold in the case of Differential Evolution.

Considerations on correlations in shift-register pseudorandom number generators and their removal

Abstract We present a simple calculation quantitatively explaining the triplet correlations in the popular shift-register random number generator “R250”, which were recently observed numerically by Schmid and Wilding, and are known from general analysis of this type of generator. Starting from these considerations, we discuss various methods to remove these correlations by combining different shift-register generators. Calculation of chromatographic properties of barbiturates by molecular topology

A study has been made of the relationship between the RF values obtained by thin layer chromatography for a group of barbiturates and the connectivity indices proposed by Kier and Hall. By using multivariable regression we obtained the corresponding connectivity functions, which were selected on the basis of their respective statistics parameters. The regression analysis of the connectivity functions shows a correct prediction of the experimental elution sequence for this group of molecules on silicagel with two mobile phases of different polarity. The possible relation existing between RF values obtained by thin-layer chromatography for a group of anilines with connectivity indices proposed by Kier and Hall has been studied. Information functionals allow one to quantify the degree of randomness of a given probability distribution, either absolutely (through min/max entropy principles) or relative to a prescribed reference one. Our primary aim is to analyze the “minimum information” assumption, which is a classic concept (R. Balian, 1968) in the random matrix theory. We put special emphasis on generic level (eigenvalue) spacing distributions and the degree of their randomness, or alternatively — information/organization deficit.

The influence of the stochastic features of the energy source on the design of an electromagnetic generator

The purpose of this paper is to clarify in a general way how the unavoidable randomness of renewable energy sources influences the magnetic design of electric generator. A general model of electro magnetic generator based on the well known d-q axes analysis is given. The energy source is modelled as a stochastic variable and is included in the equations of the system. The equations are solved and, therefore, the energy output of the system is linked to the random characteristic of the energy source. As a result, the magnetic circuit and the parameters of the generator that maximize the energy extraction can be found and generally linked to the stochastic details of the source.

The 1970 US Draft Lottery Revisited: A Spatial Analysis

Summary We revise the result of the 1970 selective service draft lottery in the USA following an open question that was suggested by Fienberg in a paper published in Science in 1971. The result of the drawings can be viewed as a particular spatial pattern which can be analysed by using general spatial tools adapted to our context. Approaches for assessing the complete spatial randomness for this spatial process on a finite support are proposed. More specifically, these approaches involve the number of events in a square window and a k(r)-based function used to analyse stationary spatial point processes.
