Langerhans cell histiocytosis with oral manifestations: a rare and unusual case report
2012
Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH), is a rare, proliferative disorder in which the accumulation of pathologic Langerhans cells leads to local tissue infiltration and destruction. We present a case of a 32 years old, completely edentulous female patient who presented with erythema of hard palate, maxillary alveolar mucosa and mucosa over the distobuccal part of mandibular alveolar ridge with foci of ulcerations. Histopathologic features were suggestive of LCH which was confirmed by immunohistochemistry which was CD1a positive, confirmatory for LCH. Bone scan revealed multiple bone involvement. At this stage, disease had already progressed to multisystem involvement with endocrinal abnormali…
Depressive Symptom Profiles Predict Specific Neurodegenerative Disease Syndromes in Early Stages
2020
Background: During early stages, patients with neurodegenerative diseases (NDG) often present with depressive symptoms. However, because depression is a heterogeneous disorder, more precise delineation of the specific depressive symptom profiles that arise early in distinct NDG syndromes is necessary to enhance patient diagnosis and care. Methods and Findings: Five-hundred and sixty four participants self-reported their depressive symptoms using the Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS), including 111 healthy older control subjects (NC) and 453 patients diagnosed with one of six NDGs who were at the mild stage of disease (CDR® Dementia Staging Instrument ≤ 1) [186 Alzheimer's disease (AD), 76 be…
A Prevalence Estimation of Exstrophy and Epispadias in Germany From Public Health Insurance Data
2021
Introduction: The prevalence of rare diseases is very important for health care research. According to the European Surveillance of Congenital Anomalies (EUROCAT) registers, the live prevalence for exstrophy and/or epispadias (grades 1–3) is reported with 1:23,255 (95% CI: 1:26,316; 1:20,000). A Europe-wide prevalence evaluation based on reports from excellence centers estimates a prevalence for exstrophies of 1:32,200 and for isolated epispadias of 1:96,800 in 2010. However, the frequency of exstrophy [International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems revision 10 (ICD-10): Q64.1] and epispadias (ICD-10: Q64.0) treated in different age groups in Germany remain…
Post-transplant lymphoproliferative disorder in adult renal transplant recipients: case series and review of literature
2021
Post-transplant lymphoproliferative disorder (PTLD) is serious life-threating complication of transplantation. The clinical picture differs from lymphomas observed in the general population, with different manifestation, histopathology, higher aggressiveness with involvement of sites beyond the primary lymph node, and poorer outcome. The objective of the study was to present nine cases of PTLD observed in our centre among the kidney transplant recipient population and discuss the results with up-to-date literature. We performed a retrospective single-centre assessment of PTLD incidence in the cohorts of kidney transplant recipients followed by our centre. We found nine cases of PTLD, five m…
Oral manifestations of ellis-van creveld syndrome. A rare case report
2019
Ellis-van Creveld syndrome (EVC) or chondroectodermal dysplasia is an autosomal recessive disorder, characterized by dwarfism, polydactyly, hypoplastic fingernails and congenital heart defects, finding in most of the cases orofacial anomalies. We describe a clinical case of a 9 year old male patient diagnosed with EVC who visited our Maxillofacial private consultation at Alcorcon Southern Hospital, presenting typical oral manifestations such as dental agenesis, delayed eruption, hypoplasia of the enamel, dental dysmorphism, taurodontism and supernumerary teeth. EVC syndrome is a rare disease and requires a multidisciplinary approach. Oral features are constant and requires the jointly perfo…
Population Level Survival of Patients with Chronic Myeloid Leukemia in Germany in the Early 21st Century
2012
Abstract Abstract 759 Background: Chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) is a rare but highly treatable form of leukemia. Recent advances in the treatment of CML have dramatically improved survival in clinical trials. Prior work using the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database in the United States (US) suggest that survival on the population level has increased, but still lags behind that seen in clinical trials1. In the past, evaluation of population level survival in other countries has been hampered by the lack of high quality data from a large enough population to evaluate trends in survival in this rare disease. Recently, a collaborative effort between the German Cancer Re…
First Case Report of Primary Carnitine Deficiency Manifested as Intellectual Disability and Autism Spectrum Disorder
2019
Systemic primary carnitine deficiency (PCD) is a genetic disorder caused by decreased or absent organic cation transporter type 2 (OCTN2) carnitine transporter activity, resulting in low serum carnitine levels and decreased carnitine accumulation inside cells. In early life, PCD is usually diagnosed as a metabolic decompensation, presenting as hypoketotic hypoglycemia, Reye syndrome, or sudden infant death; in childhood, PCD presents with skeletal or cardiac myopathy. However, the clinical presentation of PCD characterized by autism spectrum disorder (ASD) with intellectual disability (ID) has seldom been reported in the literature. In this report, we describe the clinical features of a sev…
Validation and utility of ARDS subphenotypes identified by machine-learning models using clinical data: an observational, multicohort, retrospective …
2022
Item does not contain fulltext BACKGROUND: Two acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) subphenotypes (hyperinflammatory and hypoinflammatory) with distinct clinical and biological features and differential treatment responses have been identified using latent class analysis (LCA) in seven individual cohorts. To facilitate bedside identification of subphenotypes, clinical classifier models using readily available clinical variables have been described in four randomised controlled trials. We aimed to assess the performance of these models in observational cohorts of ARDS. METHODS: In this observational, multicohort, retrospective study, we validated two machine-learning clinical classifie…
Protocol for the EARCO Registry
2020
Rationale and objectives Alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency (AATD) is a genetic condition that leads to an increased risk of emphysema and liver disease. Despite extensive investigation, there remain unanswered questions concerning the natural history, pathophysiology, genetics and the prognosis of the lung disease in association with AATD. The European Alpha-1 Clinical Research Collaboration (EARCO) is designed to bring together researchers from European countries and to create a standardised database for the follow-up of patients with AATD. Study design and population The EARCO Registry is a non-interventional, multicentre, pan-European, longitudinal observational cohort study enrolling patie…
Cutis verticis gyrata and Noonan syndrome: report of two cases with pathogenetic variant in SOS1 gene
2022
Abstract Background Noonan and Noonan-like syndromes are multisystem genetic disorders, mainly with autosomal dominant trasmission, caused by mutations in several genes. Missense pathogenetic variants of SOS1 gene are the second most common cause of Noonan syndrome (NS) and account approximately for 13% to 17% of cases. Subjects carrying a pathogenetic variant in SOS1 gene tend to exhibit a distinctive phenotype that is characterized by ectodermal abnormalities. Cutis verticis gyrata (CVG) is a rare disease, congenital or acquired, characterized by the redundancy of skin on scalp, forming thick skin folds and grooves of similar aspect to cerebral cortex gyri.
