Characterization and Expression of Multiple Alternatively Spliced Transcripts of the Goodpasture Antigen Gene Region. Goodpasture Antibodies Recogniz…

1995

Collagen IV, the major component of basement membranes, is composed of six distinct alpha chains (alpha 1-alpha 6). Atypically among the collagen IV genes, the exons encoding the carboxyl-terminal region of the human alpha 3(IV) chain undergo alternative splicing. This region has been designated as the Goodpasture antigen because of its reactivity in the kidney and lung with the pathogenic autoantibodies causing Goodpasture syndrome. The data presented in this report demonstrate that, in human kidney, the gene region encompassing the Goodpasture antigen generates at least six alternatively spliced transcripts predicting five distinct proteins that differ in their carboxyl-terminus and retai…

Luminescent Pt-II and Pt-IV Platinacycles with Anticancer Activity Against Multiplatinum-Resistant Metastatic CRC and CRPC Cell Models

2020

Platinum-based chemotherapy persists to be the only effective therapeutic option against a wide variety of tumours. Nevertheless, the acquisition of platinum resistance is utterly common, ultimately cornering conventional platinum drugs to only palliative in many patients. Thus, encountering alternatives that are both effective and non-cross-resistant is urgent. In this work, we report the synthesis, reduction studies, and luminescent properties of a series of cyclometallated (C,N,N')PtIV compounds derived from amine- imine ligands, and their remarkable efficacy at the high nanomolar range and complete lack of cross57 resistance, as an intrinsic property of the platinacycle, against multipl…

On the Finite Satisfiability Problem for the Guarded Fragment with Transitivity

2005

We study the finite satisfiability problem for the guarded fragment with transitivity. We prove that in case of one transitive predicate the problem is decidable and its complexity is the same as the general satisfiability problem, i.e. 2Exptime-complete. We also show that finite models for sentences of GF with more transitive predicate letters used only in guards have essentially different properties than infinite ones.

Tracking the evolution of warning signals

1996

EVOLUTIONARYstudies are hampered by a lack of experimental ways in which to test past events such as the origination of aposematism1–7, whereby unpalatable or poisonous prey signal their unprofitability, often by being warningly coloured. Inexperienced predators do learn to avoid unpalatable prey as a result of such signals8–10, but in addition there may be an inherited cautiousness about attacking when common or conspicuous warning signals are evident11–16. As current predators are not naive in the evolutionary sense, it is still not resolved3–7,17,18 whether aposematism originated only in aggregations of prey19,20 or among solitary prey as well21–23. Here we explore this controversy in ev…

What is the letter é?

2019

Most orthographies contain both accented and non-accented vowels. But are they processed as variants of the same letter unit or as separate abstract units? Recent research in French has revealed th...

Perspective in the Processing of the Chinese Reflexive ziji: ERP Evidence

2011

We investigated the comprehension of the Chinese reflexive ziji, which is typically subject to long-distance binding. However, this preference can be overridden by verb semantics (some verbs require local binding) as well as by subtle feature combinations of intervening noun phrases (NPs) (e.g., 1st/2nd person pronouns block dependencies with more distant 3rd person antecedents). The processing of ziji was examined in sentences containing two verb types (local/self-oriented, distant/other-oriented) and three different intervening NPs (1st, 2nd , 3rd person). The event-related potential data revealed an early interaction of verb and intervener: other-oriented verbs showed more processing eff…

Small-molecule affinity capture of DNA/RNA quadruplexes and their identification in vitro and in vivo through the G4RP protocol

2019

International audience; Guanine-rich DNA and RNA sequences can fold into higher-order structures known as G-quadruplexes (or G4-DNA and G4-RNA, respectively). The prevalence of the G4 landscapes in the human genome, transcriptome and ncRNAome (non-coding RNA), collectively known as G4ome, is strongly suggestive of biological relevance at multiple levels (gene expression , replication). Small-molecules can be used to track G4s in living cells for the functional characterization of G4s in both normal and disease-associated changes in cell biology. Here, we describe biotinylated biomimetic ligands referred to as Bio-TASQ and their use as molecular tools that allow for isolating G4s through aff…

Reliability of Virtual Screening Methods in Prediction of PDE4Binhibitor Activity

2015

Identification of active ligands using computational methods is a challenging task. For example, molecular docking, pharmacophore modeling, and three dimensional quantitative structure-activity relationship models (3D-QSAR) are widely used methods to identify novel small molecules. However, all these methods have, in addition to advantages, also significant pitfalls. The aim of this study was to compare some commonly used computational methods to estimate their ability to separate highly active PDE4B-inhibitors from less active and inactive ones. Here, 152 molecules with pIC 50 -range of 3.4-10.5, originating from six original studies were used. High correlation coefficients by using dockin…

Passive in motion: the Early Italian auxiliary andare (‘to go’)

2014

The Italian construction andare ‘to go’ + (transitive) past participle expresses a passive meaning when occurring in a perfective past tense (1), whereas it conveys an additional deontic sense of (impersonal) obligation when used in an imperfective tense (2) (Bertinetto 1991; Giacalone Ramat 2000). A further constraint on the passive reading is represented by the semantics of the participle, necessarily expressing a negative value of ‘loss/destruction’; this value is moreover conceived as ‘non-intentional’, as the impossibility to express the agent (*da qualcuno) shows: (1) I documenti andarono distrutti. (*da qualcuno) the documents go. prf.3pl destroy.pst.ptcp.pl (by someone) ‘The documen…

La Comunicazione specializzata: un approccio fraseologico al discorso diplomatico britannico (1997-2007)

2009

Questo volumetto prende in esame la fraseologia della parola 'security' nellambito dei discorsi dei ministeri degli esteri britannici del governo Blair. Si nota a partire da John Cook una estensione semantica del termine 'security' che attira diversi collocati fino all'unico ministro donna Margaret Beckett.
