Adverbial expressions within the legal domain: from medieval fueros to their consolidation in language

2010

Given the importance of legal language in the study of historical phraseological, it is here analyzed the presence, use and evolution of adverbial phrases in some outstanding medieval fueros, and also how a good number of adverbial expressions have transcended and developed from legal language to other contexts, owed to —at least in some cases— a clear colloquial origin (a sabiendas, por bien...). This characteristic joins many others, such as the creation of complex syntagmas derived from the union of simple expressions: de cabo a rabo, a diestro y a sinestro, a tuerto o a derecho, etc. It is therefore interesting to study the individual, particular history of each adverbial phrase found, …

Rase un autorība izbēgušo vergu naratīvos (Fr. Duglass un H. Džeikobsa)

2017

Validation and application of a PCR primer set to quantify fungal communities in the soil environment by real-time quantitative PCR

2011

Fungi constitute an important group in soil biological diversity and functioning. However, characterization and knowledge of fungal communities is hampered because few primer sets are available to quantify fungal abundance by real-time quantitative PCR (real-time Q-PCR). The aim in this study was to quantify fungal abundance in soils by incorporating, into a real-time Q-PCR using the SYBRGreen (R) method, a primer set already used to study the genetic structure of soil fungal communities. To satisfy the real-time Q-PCR requirements to enhance the accuracy and reproducibility of the detection technique, this study focused on the 18S rRNA gene conserved regions. These regions are little affec…

The non-Gaussian distribution of galaxies gravitational fields

2016

We perform a theoretical analysis of the observational dependence between angular momentum of the galaxy clusters and their mass (richness), based on the method introduced in our previous paper. For that we obtain the distribution function of astronomical objects (like galaxies and/or smooth halos of different kinds) gravitational fields due to their tidal interaction. Within the statistical method of Chandrasekhar we are able to show that the distribution function is determined by the form of interaction between objects and for multipole (tidal) interaction it is never Gaussian. Our calculation permits to demonstrate how the alignment of galaxies angular momenta depend on the cluster richn…

Population genetic structure of aposematic alpine wood tiger moths (Parasemia plantaginis)

2012

Alpine landscape with natural fragmentation restricts gene flow among populations and causes spatio-genetic structuring (high genetic differentiation) in species living there. Consequently, alpine habitat fragmentation and dispersal barriers should make isolated populations such as wood tiger moth (Parasemia plantaginis) populations prone to lose genetic diversity by local adaptation and fixation of fittest phenotype in each local population. This species is also known to be aposematic. Yellow colour on the males’ hind wings in wood tiger moth is presumed to work more efficiently against visual hunting predators due to increased conspicuousness. In addition, in field experiments with wood t…

Einige Bemerkungen zur Emanzipation des Frauenbildes in der deutschen und polnischen Phraseologie

2019

Phrasemes reflect habits and customs, traditions, historical facts, social life phenomena and cultural values of a given society. Phrasemes often “live” longer than the image they reflect. Women were and still are a subject of phrasemes. The aim of this paper is an answer to the question if the image of women arising from the Polish and German phraseology in the face of the transformations taking place in the last 40 years in the society has changed and if new phrasemes describing women of the 21st century appeared.

Functional investigation and applications of the acetylesterase activity of the Citrus sinensis (L.) Osbeck peel

2020

The hydrolysis of acetyl moieties on a set of commercially relevant substrates was performed by employing the whole tissue of Citrus sinensis (L.) Osbeck peel as an efficient biocatalyst in mild reaction conditions with high degree of regioselectivity. The reaction is done in aqueous media and the product is easily recovered. Optimal reaction conditions were deduced and two practical applications were investigated: the elaboration of acetylglicerols and the preparation of vitamin K1 precursor. Peel waste (flavedo and albedo) from orange juice manufacturing was successfully employed as a biocatalyst.

Suppression and Replacement Gene Therapy for Autosomal Dominant Disease in a Murine Model of Dominant Retinitis Pigmentosa

2011

For dominantly inherited disorders development of gene therapies, targeting the primary genetic lesion has been impeded by mutational heterogeneity. An example is rhodopsin-linked autosomal dominant retinitis pigmentosa with over 150 mutations in the rhodopsin gene. Validation of a mutation-independent suppression and replacement gene therapy for this disorder has been undertaken. The therapy provides a means of correcting the genetic defect in a mutation-independent manner thereby circumventing the mutational diversity. Separate adeno-associated virus (AAV) vectors were used to deliver an RNA interference (RNAi)-based rhodopsin suppressor and a codon-modified rhodopsin replacement gene res…

Interaction of glutamic-acid-rich proteins with the cGMP signalling pathway in rod photoreceptors.

1999

The assembly of signalling molecules into macromolecular complexes (transducisomes) provides specificity, sensitivity and speed in intracellular signalling pathways. Rod photoreceptors in the eye contain an unusual set of glutamic-acid-rich proteins (GARPs) of unknown function. GARPs exist as two soluble forms, GARP1 and GARP2, and as a large cytoplasmic domain (GARP' part) of the beta-subunit of the cyclic GMP-gated channel. Here we identify GARPs as multivalent proteins that interact with the key players of cGMP signalling, phosphodiesterase and guanylate cyclase, and with a retina-specific ATP-binding cassette transporter (ABCR), through four, short, repetitive sequences. In electron mic…
