Selective Fatty Acid Retention and Turnover in the Freshwater Amphipod Pallaseopsis quadrispinosa
2021
Gammarid amphipods are a crucial link connecting primary producers with secondary consumers, but little is known about their nutritional ecology. Here we asked how starvation and subsequent feeding on different nutritional quality algae influences fatty acid retention, compound-specific isotopic carbon fractionation, and biosynthesis of omega-3 and omega-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) in the relict gammarid amphipod Pallaseopsis quadrispinosa. The fatty acid profiles of P. quadrispinosa closely matched with those of the dietary green algae after only seven days of refeeding, whereas fatty acid patterns of P. quadrispinosa were less consistent with those of the diatom diet. This was ma…
Hevosen perusravinnon ravintoaineiden kvantitatiiviset muutokset ravinnon kulkeutuessa ruuansulatuskanavan läpi
2017
Diet Macronutrient Composition, Physical Activity, and Body Composition in Soldiers During 6 Months Deployment
2019
Introduction: Optimal diet together with good physical fitness maintains readiness and military performance during longer deployments. The purpose of this study was to describe changes in dietary macronutrient and energy intake, total physical activity and body composition during a 6-month deployment in South Lebanon. Furthermore, associations of diet macronutrient intake and physical activity on body composition were also studied. - Materials and Methods: Forty male soldiers kept a 3-day food diary and their body composition was measured via bioimpedance and ultrasonography. Total physical activity was evaluated by accelerometers in a subgroup of participants. Measurements were conducted i…
Nutritional intake and anthropometric characteristics are associated with endurance performance and markers of low energy availability in young femal…
2023
Background Low energy availability (LEA) can have negative performance consequences, but the relationships between LEA and performance are poorly understood especially in field conditions. In addition, little is known about the contribution of macronutrients to long-term performance. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate if energy availability (EA) and macronutrient intake in a field-based situation were associated with laboratory-measured performance, anthropometric characteristics, blood markers, training volume, and/or questionnaire-assessed risk of LEA in young female cross-country (XC) skiers. In addition, the study aimed to clarify which factors explained performance. Metho…
Ternimaitovalmisteen vaikutus veren aminohappopitoisuuksiin levon ja voimaharjoituksen yhteydessä
2002
Niina Vehviläinen, 2001. Ternimaitovalmisteen vaikutus veren aminohappopitoisuuksiin levon ja voimahatjoituksen yhteydessä. Liikuntafysiologian pro-gradu -tutkielma. Jyväskylän yliopisto, liikuntabiologian laitos, 110s. Tämän työn tarkoituksena oli tutkia Dynamic™ Colostrum (Hi-Col, Oulu) ternimaitovalmisteen vaikutusta veren aminohappopitoisuuksiin levon ja voimahatjoituksen yhteydessä. Lisäksi tarkasteltiin ternimaitovalmisteen mahdollista vaikutusta kuormitusryhmän suorituskykyyn voimaharjoituksen yhteydessä. Tutkimus toteutettiin satunnaistettuna kaksoissokkotutkimuksena. Koehenkilöinä oli 12 tervettä, kuntoilumielessä liikuntaa harrastavaa 20-35 -vuotiasta miestä. Koehenkilöt jaettiin …
Hydrogen isotopes (δ2H) of polyunsaturated fatty acids track bioconversion by zooplankton
2022
1. Organisms at the base of aquatic food webs synthesize essential nutrients, such as omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (n-3 PUFA), which are transferred to consumers at higher trophic levels. Many consumers, requiring n-3 long-chain (LC) PUFA, such as eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), have limited ability to biosynthesize them from the essential dietary precursor α-linolenic acid (ALA) and thus rely on dietary provision of LC-PUFA. 2. We investigated LC-PUFA metabolism in freshwater zooplankton using stable hydrogen isotopes (δ2H) of fatty acids as tracers. We conducted feeding experiments with the freshwater keystone grazer Daphnia to quantify changes in the δ2…
Does differential iron supply to algae affect Daphnia life history? : An ionome-wide study
2019
The availability of iron (Fe) varies considerably among diet items, as well as ecosystems. Availability of Fe has also changed due to anthropogenic environmental changes in oceanic as well as inland ecosystems. We know little about its role in the nutrition of ecologically important consumers, particularly in inland ecosystems. Physiological studies in several taxa indicate marked effects of dietary Fe on oogenesis. We predicted that differential Fe supply to algae will impact algal Fe concentration with consequences on the life history of the freshwater grazer, Daphnia magna. We found that algal Fe concentration increased with Fe supply, but did not affect algal growth, indicating that the…
