El CMV desperta interès com a patògen en diferents tipus de malalties inflamatòries en absència d'immunosupressió canònica. S'ha vist que pacients immunocompetents, especialment aquells qui presenten sepsi severa, sovint experimenten episodis d'infecció activa pel CMV. Malgrat la disponibilitat d'informació que suggereix causalitat patogènica del CMV en aquest marc clínic, els assajos clínics controlats mitjançant l'ús de teràpia antiviral, en són ben pocs.
