Photocatalytic membrane reactors: fundamentals, membrane materials and operational issues

Abstract: This chapter reports the properties of semiconductor materials used in heterogeneous photocatalysis together with a comparison of heterogeneous photocatalytic systems and a brief description of the types of membranes that can be used. Some aspects of membrane operations, such as fouling, separation of a photocatalyst and effectiveness of photodegradation on permeate quality are discussed.

Photocatalytic membrane reactors: configurations, performance and applications in water treatment and chemical production

Abstract: The configurations and performance of photocatalytic membrane reactors (PMRs) assembled with membranes (also photocatalytic type) and/or suspended photocatalyst are described. Examples of the application of PMRs in water/wastewater treatment as well as in photocatalytic synthesis are shown. An outline of the modeling of PMRs is presented with a brief economic analysis; future trends in PMRs are also discussed.

Civil Wastewater Remediation through Employment of Indigenous Microalgae and Sewage Sludge

Microalgae are photosynthetic microorganisms that can employ some inorganic pollutant compounds as nutrients, for example nitrates and phosphates. Traditional wastewater treatment comprises oxidation ponds in which the Activated Sludge performs the oxidation of the organic matter. Microalgae may be well applied in these processes. In this work, we tested the potential of remediation of a mixture of a local microalga, Chlorella sp. Pozzillo, and activated sludge and compared it to controls of only microalga and only activated sludge. Remediation of contaminated soils is spreading as a matter of crucial importance nowadays. Bioremediation via bioslurry reactors of sites polluted by recalcitrant pollutants has been proved to be a valuable option, although optimization is needed to reduce process costs. We have studied the electrochemical treatment of aqu eous solutions contaminated by Acid Orange 7 (AO7) by electro-Fenton process (EF). The main object ive was to evaluate how the electrochemical route affects the performances of the d egradation process. EF process was carried out in a number of very different reactors: conventional bench scale electrochem ical cell, microfluidic electrochemical reactor, microbial fuel cell and stack for reverse electrodialysis processes. Effect of pH on biological phosphorus uptake.

An anaerobic aerobic laboratory scale sequencing batch reactor (SBR) was operated to study the effect of pH on enhanced biological phosphorus removal. Seven steady states were achieved under different operating conditions. In all of them, a slight variation in the pH value was observed during anaerobic phase. However, pH rose significantly during aerobic phase. The increase observed was due to phosphorus uptake and carbon dioxide stripping. When pH was higher than 8.2-8.25 the phosphorus uptake rate clearly decreased.
