The Marvelous History of the Dominican Republic in Junot Diaz's The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao

2013

Few things are as noticeable in Junot Diaz’s The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao (2007) as its references to a wide variety of movies, TV series, comics, and most centrally to fantasy, the genre in which worlds are created that allow for the existence of magic, monsters, and other elements of the marvelous. Interweaving the story of the fictional Cabral family in the Dominican Republic and in the diaspora with the history of the dictatorship of Rafael Trujillo (1930–1961), the novel offers a sweeping reinterpretation of Caribbean history in a way that is completely intelligible only if one understands the relevance of its primary fantasy intertext, The Lord of the Rings (1954–55), both for…

Touring the magical North : Borealism and the indigenous Sámi in contemporary English-language children’s fantasy literature

2017

Discourses of exotic Lapland with its indigenous inhabitants, the Sámi, are widely circulated in the tourist industry and also surface in contemporary English-language children’s fantasy fiction. In contrast to the ‘self-orientalism’ of discourses of tourism, where places and people are represented as exotic to a tourist gaze, the portrayals of the North and its inhabitants gain different symbolic meanings in fictional texts produced by outsiders who rely on earlier texts – myths, fairy tales and anthropological accounts – rather than on their own lived experience of the North or indigeneity. This article applies the concept of Borealism to examine cross-cultural intertextuality and discou…

From athletic talent development to dual career development? A case study in a Finnish high performance sports environment

2020

The focus of dual career (DC) research has shifted from exploring individual experiences within Athletic Talent Development Environments (ATDEs) toward understanding the impact of the environment and the broader cultural context on individuals’ developmental trajectories in Dual Career Development Environments (DCDEs). To comply with national and EU recommendations for socially responsible elite sport, many successful ATDEs list DC as one of their primary values and advertise themselves as DCDEs in order to attract more athletes. The present study aimed to evaluate whether and how a talent development environment for youth athletes in Finland has transformed from an ATDE to DCDE by explorin…

Stalinismi musiikissa : narodnost-käsite Neuvostoliiton musiikkipolitiikan diskursseissa 1930-luvulla

2016

Tässä maisterintutkielmassa tarkasteltiin yhden sosialistisen realismin alakäsitteen, narodnostin, merkitystä ja asemaa Neuvostoliiton musiikkipolitiikassa 1930-luvulla. Narodnost-käsitteen merkitystä selvitettiin suhteessa 1930-luvun Neuvostoliiton laajempiin poliittisiin diskursseihin, mikä toi esille Neuvostoliiton virallisen taidesuuntauksen muotoutumisen yhteyden tuon ajan historialliseen ja poliittiseen kontekstiin. Käsitteen määrittelyssä hyödynnettiin kahta historian ja kielen suhdetta tarkastelevaa teoreettista viitekehystä, diskurssintutkimusta ja käsitehistoriaa. Näiden teorioiden pohjalta luotiin lähestymistapa, jossa käsitteiden nähdään muodostuvan diskursseista. Näin ollen käs…

Phenomenology as Ecology: Movement from Ego- to Geo- and Eco-Thinking

2018

A paradigmatic change of thinking is taking place at present – away from the transcendental themes of mind, ego, and language, towards the world, reality, immanence, and the realms of the Earth and the cosmos. This change marks the ecological turn of philosophy. Awareness of the new ecological situation has produced a whole range of new directions of research – e.g., eco-philosophy, environmental philosophy, philosophy of nature, deep ecology, ecocriticism, ecofeminism, and ecoscepticism. This article is therefore concerned with the relations among eco-philosophy, environmental philosophy, and phenomenology. Phenomenology occupies an important place in the apprehension of the present-day ec…

Restructuring the defence industry and arms production in Russia

2000

AT THE BEGINNING OF 1997, after five years of failed reforms in the defence industry, there took place a substantial change in the administrative structure running this sector. The Ministry of Economic Affairs took over the restructuring of the defence industry and thereby defined a new way of tackling reforms in this industrial sector. Three elements stand out in the new approach: intersectorality, a predominance of civilian elements and a greater realism. This approach, therefore, represents a break with the idea in force up to that moment of the best way to tackle problems related to the defence industry, which was greatly conditioned by its Soviet heritage. Although two years later this…

Roy Bhaskar’s Critical Realism and the Social Science of Marxian Economics

2018

This article supports claims that critical realism philosophy of science, as refounded in the hands of Roy Bhaskar, offers valuable knowledge enhancing insight into the advancement of Marx’s research program. However, it maintains that key principles set out by Bhaskar have not been adequately assimilated by those working with critical realism in the field of Marxist studies. When they are properly considered, they point to the necessity of reconstructing Marx’s corpus on a divergent basis from the conventional form it has assumed since the codification of “Marxism” by Karl Kautsky in the late nineteenth century as an overarching theory of history or historical materialism, wherein Marx’s e…
