Ricoeur's surprising take on recognition

2011

This essay examines Paul Ricœur’s views on recognition in his book The Course of Recognition. It highlights those aspects that are in some sense surprising, in relation to his previous publications and the general debates on Hegelian Anerkennung and the politics of recognition. After an overview of Ricœur’s book, the paper examines the meaning of “recognition” in Ricœur’s own proposal, in the dictionaries Ricœur uses, and in the contemporary debates. Then it takes a closer look at the ideas of recognition as identification and as “taking as true.” Then it turns to recognition (attestation) of oneself, in light of the distinction between human constants (and the question “What am I?”), and h…

Hydro-mechanical modelling of a natural slope affected by a multiple slip surface failure mechanism

2009

A coupled hydro-mechanical formulation is presented for the analysis of landslide motion during crisis episodes. The mathematical formulation is used to model a natural slope affected by a multiple slip surface failure mechanism, in which pore water pressure evolution was identified as the main cause for movement accelerations. An elasto-plastic constitutive model is adopted for the behaviour of slip surfaces. Material parameters are obtained by combining the available laboratory tests and the back analysis of some crisis episodes. After being calibrated and validated, the model is applied to improve the understanding of the physical processes involved and to predict the landslide behaviour…

The Effect of Predator Population Dynamics on Batesian Mimicry Complexes.

2022

Understanding Batesian mimicry is a classic problem in evolutionary biology. In Batesian mimicry, a defended species (the model) is mimicked by an undefended species (the mimic). Prior theories have emphasized the role of predator behavior and learning as well as evolution in model-mimic complexes but have not examined the role of population dynamics in potentially governing the relative abundances and even persistence of model-mimic systems. Here, we examined the effect of the population dynamics of predators and alternative prey on the prevalence of warning-signaling prey composed of models and mimics. Using optimal foraging theory and signal detection theory, we found that the inclusion …

Verbal effect on memorisation and recognition of Wagner’s leitmotifs

2009

This study aims to investigate the different listening experiences of Richard Wagner’s leitmotifs with and without verbal (external) information provided about the leitmotifs, their meanings and the librettos of the work. In the experiment half of the participants were asked to read and memorise written information about two leitmotifs, and then to listen to the two corresponding leitmotifs several times until they were memorised. The other participants were asked to perform the same task without reading the written information. A recognition task was then conducted, which instructed participants to listen to an excerpt from Wagner’s Das Rheingold and respond with whether they noticed the t…

When more is less: The other side of artificial intelligence recommendation

2022

Based on consumers' preferences, AI (artificial intelligence) recommendation automatically filters information, which provokes scholars' debate. Supporters believe that by analyzing the consumers' preferences, AI recommendation enables consumers to choose products more quickly and with lower cost. Critics deem that consumers are more easily trapped in information cocoons because of the use of AI recommendation. This reduces the possibility of consumers contacting with a variety of commodities, thus lowering the consumer decision quality. Based on experiments, this paper discusses the moderating role of AI recommendation on the relationship of consumers' preferences and information cocoons. …

Network ties in the international opportunity recognition of family SMEs

2011

The importance of network ties is emphasized in the current literature on opportunity recognition. However, it is unclear how firms with limited bridging networks, such as family SMEs, recognize international opportunities through their network ties. In this case study we found that in gaining foreign market entry, those family SMEs that lack existing network ties recognize opportunities through weak ties formed in international exhibitions. The findings also indicate that rather than being proactive, family SMEs respond reactively to opportunities that emerge coincidentally. The trustfulness of the tie is important when they consider these opportunities and form new ties for internationali…

Oppdragelsessyn i endring? : En komparativ studie av populære oppdragelsesbøker utgitt i Norge i perioden 1950-2000

2017

Masteroppgave pedagogikk PED511 - Universitetet i Agder 2017 The topic of this assignment is to study if the view of parenting has changed in Norway. There have been many discussions about parenting and what it entails. This study is limited to popular books that have been released in Norway between 1950 and 2000. The parenting books emphasise different aspects in the children’s upbringing and how that positively affects their development. The primary research question is to examine the views of parenting and its development from four books from the selected period: “Barneoppdragelse” by Lise Østlyngen (1950), “Barn og foreldre: barneoppdragelse i praksis” by Hambro & Moa (1966), “Elsker du…

Viral and cellular determinants of hepatitis C virus RNA replication in cell culture.

2003

Studies on the replication of hepatitis C virus (HCV) have been facilitated by the development of selectable subgenomic replicons replicating in the human hepatoma cell line Huh-7 at a surprisingly high level. Analysis of the replicon population in selected cells revealed the occurrence of cell culture-adaptive mutations that enhance RNA replication substantially. To gain a better understanding of HCV cell culture adaptation, we characterized conserved mutations identified by sequence analysis of 26 independent replicon cell clones for their effect on RNA replication. Mutations enhancing replication were found in nearly every nonstructural (NS) protein, and they could be subdivided into at …
