Sponges (phylum Porifera) live in a symbiotic relationship with microorganisms, primarily bacteria. Until now, molecular proof for the capacity of sponges to recognize fungi in the surrounding aqueous milieu has not been available. Here we demonstrate, for the demosponge Suberites domuncula (Porifera, Demospongiae, Hadromerida), a cell surface receptor that recognizes (1--3)-beta-D-glucans, e.g. curdlan or laminarin. This receptor, the (1--3)-beta-D-glucan-binding protein, was identified and its cDNA analysed. Abstract The filamentous fungus Magnaporthe oryzae has the potential to be developed as an alternative platform organism for the heterologous production of industrially important enzymes. M. oryzae is easy to handle, fast‐growing and unlike yeast, posttranslational modifications like N‐glycosylations are similar to the human organism. Here, we established M. oryzae as a host for the expression of the unspecific peroxygenase from the basidiomycete Agrocybe aegerita (AaeUPO). Production, crystallization and preliminary X-ray analysis of the human integrin alpha1 I domain.

Integrin α1β1 is one of the main collagen receptors in many cell types. A fast large-scale production, purification and crystallization method for the integrin α1 I domain is reported here. The α1 I domain was crystallized using the vapour-diffusion method with a reservoir solution containing a mixture of PEG 4000, sodium acetate, glycerol and Tris–HCl buffer. The crystals beong to the C2 space group, with unit-cell parameters a = 74.5, b = 81.9, c = 37.3 Å, α = γ = 90.0, β = 90.8°. The crystals diffract to 2.0 Å and a 94.2% complete data set to 2.2 Å has been collected from a single crystal with an R merge of 5.8%.

For the past two decades, the study of the mechanism of DNA replication has been focused mainly on the chromosomes of the simple prokaryotes and their viruses (1). The complexity of the eukaryotic genome and multiple levels of control during the replication of eukaryotic chromosomes have until recently prevented similar studies. In recent years, a lower eukaryote, the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae, has become a major focus of efforts in molecular biology. In this chapter, I will briefly review accomplishments in this area. Neutralizing antibodies against rotavirus produced in transgenically labelled purple tomatoes

Edible fruits are inexpensive biofactories for human health-promoting molecules that can be ingested as crude extracts or partially purified formulations. We show here the production of a model human antibody for passive protection against the enteric pathogen rotavirus in transgenically labelled tomato fruits. Transgenic tomato plants expressing a recombinant human immunoglobulin A (hIgA_2A1) selected against the VP8* peptide of rotavirus SA11 strain were obtained. The amount of hIgA_2A1 protein reached 3.6 ± 0.8% of the total soluble protein in the fruit of the transformed plants. Soluble liver antigen (SLA) antibody detection by ELISA and multiplexing technologies

Abstract Objective: Develop and evaluate assays for the detection of antibodies to soluble liver antigen (SLA). SLA, also known as liver/pancreas antibody, was found to be 100% specific for autoimmune hepatitis (AIH) in a recent study of 2000 sera collected from individuals with various disease conditions and healthy individuals (Wies et al., Lancet 2000; 355:1510).
