Similar biomechanical properties of four tripled tendon graft models for ACL reconstruction

2021

Abstract Purpose The present study tested and compared the biomechanical properties of four different triplicate graft tendon techniques. Methods 32 tripled tendons from the common extensor muscle of bovine fingers were tested on a material testing machine, passing the end loop over a metal rod of a clevis connected to the load cell on the upper side, and fixing the lower end to a clamp. The samples were divided into four groups: (A) tripled with a free end sutured only to one of the two fixed bundles (B) tripled with a free end positioned between the two fixed strands and sutured to both (C) tripled with an S-shape and all the three strands sutured together at the upper and lower extremiti…

Facial transplantation: A concise update

2012

Objectives: Update on clinical results obtained by the first worldwide facial transplantation teams as well as review of the literature concerning the main surgical, immunological, ethical, and follow-up aspects described on facial transplanted patients. Study design: MEDLINE search of articles published on “face transplantation” until March 2012. Results: Eighteen clinical cases were studied. The mean patient age was 37.5 years, with a higher prevalence of men. Main surgical indication was gunshot injuries (6 patients). All patients had previously undergone multiple conventional surgical reconstructive procedures which had failed. Altogether 8 transplant teams belonging to 4 countries part…

Evaluation of the methodological quality of articles on autologous breast reconstruction

2018

Abstract Background Breast cancer remains the most common cancer among women worldwide. Autologous breast reconstruction may contribute toward restoring body image and improving quality of life after mastectomy. This systematic literature review describes differences in the quality and type of studies investigating autologous breast reconstruction techniques over time. Methods MEDLINE was searched for articles related to the surgical techniques, namely, TRAM, LADO, DIEP, and SGAP/IGAP, for the periods 1970 to 2007 and 2008 to 2010. The quality and type of studies were compared across the two time periods. Full-texts were evaluated according to prespecified quality criteria. Results The MEDL…

Delay in diagnosis of oral cancer:a systematic review

2021

Background Oral cancer represents a worldwide public health problem, being among the most prevalent, associated with high morbidity and mortality rates. This systematic review aimed to review the causes of the delayed diagnosis of oral cancer mainly in the elderly, in developed and developing countries. Material and Methods Search strategy was developed for MEDLINE databases (via PubMed), EMBASE, Web of Science, SCOPUS, and LILACS and for grey literature (Google Scholar, ProQuest and OpenGrey), without language or period restrictions. The risk of bias was assessed using instruments from the Joanna Briggs Institute and the quality of evidence according to the GRADE system. Results The search…

Vaginal reconstruction/fistulae.

2001

Vaginal reconstruction is required in congenital absence of the vagina in the paediatric population and in patients with surgical (anterior exenteration) or traumatic loss of the vagina. Although vaginal agenesis is rare, its description and attempts at replacement vaginoplasty date back to antiquity. Different forms of vaginal reconstruction are described, including the use of split-thickness or full-thickness grafts, amnion, peritoneum or bowel. Experience with bowel segments for vaginoplasty, with few complications and high success rates, have expanded the indications for this technique, rendering it of great importance in the field of vaginal reconstruction, especially when large bowel …

Male breast cancer: Reconstructive surgery

2020

The conventional treatment for male breast cancer consists of modified radical mastectomy with axillary sentinel node biopsy and/or axillary lymph node dissection in case of lymph node-positive disease. However, breast-conserving surgery (BCS) is gaining popularity also among men. In both cases, surgery leaves an aesthetic disfigurement that impacts patient well-being and quality of life. Thus, even if male breast has a different social and emotional role than female’s one, male breast reconstruction deserves the same importance. The aim of this chapter is to give a comprehensive review on latest indications and strategies for the post-oncological reconstructive surgery of the male breast.

Primary Extracranial Meningiomas of the Head and Neck

2021

Meningiomas represent the most common benign histological tumor of the central nervous system. Usually, meningiomas are intracranial, showing a typical dural tail sign on brain MRI with Gadolinium, but occasionally they can infiltrate the skull or be sited extracranially. We present a systematic review of the literature on extracranial meningiomas of the head and neck, along with an emblematic case of primary extracranial meningioma (PEM), which provides further insights into PEM management. A literature search according to the PRISMA statement was conducted from 1979 to June 2021 using PubMed, Web of Science, Google Scholar, and Scopus databases, searching for relevant Mesh terms (primary …

Microsurgical Scalp Reconstruction in the Elderly

2015

BACKGROUND Microvascular reconstruction is the mainstay of treatment in complex scalp defects. The rate of elderly patients requiring scalp reconstruction is increasing, but outcomes in elderly patients are unclear. The purpose of this study was to systematically review the literature pertaining to free tissue transfer for scalp reconstruction in patients older than 65 years to compare outcomes among different free flaps and determine the safety profile of treatment. METHODS A systematic review of the available literature of patients undergoing microvascular scalp reconstruction was completed. Details for patients 65 years and older were extracted and reviewed for data analysis. RESULTS A t…

An innervated retroauricular skin flap for total earlobule reconstruction.

2003

In this article, the authors describe a technique for total earlobule reconstruction in a patient who underwent earlobule excision for basal cell carcinoma. The reconstruction was by means of an innervated retroauricular skin flap, folded double. The flap presented preserved skin sensitivity over all the reconstructed area, which is compromised by those techniques using a cranially or medially based flap which lead to the reconstruction of an insensible earlobule. This is a very important aspect of this technique, especially for those who wear pendant earrings, since a non-sensitive lobule would be more vulnerable to traumas causing laceration. In addition, it allows a good aesthetic result…
