Construction of Group Exercise Sessions in Geriatric Inpatient Rehabilitation

2008

There is little knowledge about the ways geriatric physiotherapy is being carried out in practice and about the situational construction of formal policies for promoting physical activity. This article examines how professional physiotherapists and frail community-dwelling older adults as their clients use talk and action to construct a group exercise session in an inpatient rehabilitation setting in Finland. The analysis of 7 group exercise sessions with a total of 52 clients and 9 professional physiotherapists revealed 3 different practitioner approaches, which served different functions in older adults' empowerment and lifestyle activity change. The highly structured approach favored tac…

Idiopathic infantile asymmetry, proposal of a measurement scale

2004

Abstract To evaluate the development of idiopathic infantile asymmetry and the efficacy of therapeutic interventions, spinal scoliosis can be quantified on the basis of radiographs. For obvious reasons, use of this technique is limited. Here we present a clinical method to describe and quantify infantile asymmetry. For item selection, spontaneous movements (SMs), reactive movements (RMs) and length differences were video recorded in 30 infants (median age 10 weeks, range 6–16) with variable degrees of asymmetry. Within these three categories, reactive movements elicited by head turns to the right and left side in the prone and supine position emerged as reliable parameters reflecting trunk …

Precocity of the acquisition of language and type II spinal muscular atrophy in 3–4-year-old children: a study of 12 cases

2005

We studied the development of language in 3-4-year-old children with type II spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) (10 boys and two girls), aged 36-47 months (mean age 39.83+/-4.68 months) and compared our findings to a control group of 26 healthy children (mean age 40.00+/-4.43 months, 22 boys and four girls). We carried out a lexicogrammatical analysis of the data and we observed significant differences in the "vocabulary", "nouns", "verbs", "words" and "adverbs" variables between the children with SMA and the controls. Three- to four-year-old children suffering from type II spinal muscular atrophy, an autosomal genetic disease causing severe physical handicap (motor, functional, respiratory), pr…

High-speed rotational angioplasty-induced echo contrast in vivo and in vitro optical analysis

1992

High-speed rotational angioplasty is being evaluated as an alternative interventional device for the endovascular treatment of chronic coronary occlusions. It has been postulated that this type of angioplasty device may produce particulate debris or cavitations that induce myocardial ischemia. To determine the clinical presence of myocardial ischemia during rotational angioplasty, echocardiographic monitoring for wall motion abnormalities was performed in 9 patients undergoing rotational atheroablation using the Auth Rotablator for 10-sec intervals at 150,000 and 170,000 rpm. No wall motion abnormalities were detected in 5 patients evaluated with transesophageal echocardiography or in 4 pat…

Microstructure of rat behavioral response to anxiety in hole-board

2010

Aim of present research was to assess, by means of descriptive and multivariate approaches, in Wistar rats tested in hole-board apparatus, whether a microstructure of hole exploratory behavior may be identified in the behavioral response to anxiety. Two groups of 15 subjects were tested: one received 1 ml of saline IP and one was IP injected with diazepam at 0.5 mg/kg dissolved in 1 ml of saline. Following saline, six not yet reported hole-exploratory components were identified: active-dip, static-dip, rapid-dip, circular-sniff, point-sniff and central-sniff. Diazepam provoked significant changes of their per cent distribution. Results of multivariate analyses revealed a complex microstruct…

"In vivo" evaluation of the vascular pattern in oral peri-implant tissues.

2011

Abstract Introduction The vascularisation of the peri-implant tissue represents the key factor in obtaining a successful result in implantology, since an adequate vascular supply allows wound healing and the presence of numerous growth factors that promote osteogenesis. The aim of this study was to analyse “in vivo” the vascular pattern of the peri-implant mucosa in subjects that received implant treatment. Materials and methods In the study 22 subjects were examined, 11 of whom (test group) received dental implants (Straumann Dental Implant System ® ) while 11 were in the control group; the analysis was performed in the peri-implant masticatory mucosa. The evaluation of the microcirculatio…

Locking plates for corrective osteotomy of malunited dorsally tilted distal radial fractures: a biomechanical study.

2005

The purpose of the study was to compare the biomechanical properties of five different palmar fixation plate designs in a distal radius osteotomy cadaver model. A 1 cm metaphyseal osteotomy gap was made to simulate a corrective osteotomy and the osteotomy plated. Axial load was applied to the distal end of each construct by a material testing machine under control of a motion analysis video system. The specimens were arranged into five implant groups of eight specimens each. No test group developed deformity and movement of the fracture gap greater than 2 mm with a load of 100 N. Increasing the load to 250 N revealed statistically significant differences in stiffness and failure load betwe…

Multisensory integration of drumming actions: musical expertise affects perceived audiovisual asynchrony

2009

We investigated the effect of musical expertise on sensitivity to asynchrony for drumming point-light displays, which varied in their physical characteristics (Experiment 1) or in their degree of audiovisual congruency (Experiment 2). In Experiment 1, 21 repetitions of three tempos x three accents x nine audiovisual delays were presented to four jazz drummers and four novices. In Experiment 2, ten repetitions of two audiovisual incongruency conditions x nine audiovisual delays were presented to 13 drummers and 13 novices. Participants gave forced-choice judgments of audiovisual synchrony. The results of Experiment 1 show an enhancement in experts' ability to detect asynchrony, especially fo…

Photoinduced mass transport in amorphous As‐S‐Se films

2012

Direct surface patterning due to photoinduced mass transport in amorphous As-S-Se films has been studied. Illumination of the films with two orthogonally (±45°) polarized beam interference pattern causes the formation of surface relief gratings on the films due to lateral mass transport regarding to light propagation direction. The obtained experimental results showed the dependence of photoinduced surface relief depth (Δh) on film thickness during holographic recording from film side as well as from glass substrate side. After constant exposure doses for the films with a thickness d 1 μm values of Δh do not depend significantly on the film thickness for recording from film side but decreas…

Application of amorphous chalcogenide thin films in optical recording technologies

2005

A solid immersion holographic method for the recording of refractive-index and surface-relief modulated gratings with a period of 0.2 µm–1 µm in amorphous films of chalcogenide semiconductors As2S3 and As-S-Se has been developed and studied. The angular selectivity of holographic recording in amorphous chalcogenide thin films can be improved significantly by a decrease of grating period. The possibility to use the amorphous chalcogenide films as a media for holographic recording and storage of information with high density is discussed. (© 2005 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co.
