Volume strain, strain type and flow path in a narrow shear zone
1998
This study explores the state of finite strain and changes in the mean kinematic vorticity number, grain size, whole-rock chemistry and mineralogy across an upper amphibolite-facies shear zone in a metadiorite, northern Malawi, east-central Africa. P–T conditions during shear-zone formation and deformation were approximately 700–750 °C and 5–7 kbar and are slightly less than P–T conditions for the regional peak of metamorphism. The major rock-forming minerals, plagioclase, hornblende, biotite, and quartz, were deformed by crystal-plastic processes accompanied by, except for hornblende, dynamic recrystallization. The modal abundance of all four major rock-forming minerals shows no systematic…
Fire effects on soil aggregation: A review
2011
Abstract Fire can affect soil properties depending on a number of factors including fire severity and soil type. Aggregate stability (AS) refers to soil structure resilience in response to external mechanical forces. Many authors consider soil aggregation to be a parameter reflecting soil health, as it depends on chemical, physical and biological factors. The response of AS to forest fires is complex, since it depends on how fire has affected other related properties such as organic matter content, soil microbiology, water repellency and soil mineralogy. Opinions differ concerning the effect of fire on AS. Some authors have observed a decrease in AS in soils affected by intense wildfire or …
Solvent Modulated Assembly of Two Ni(II) Complexes: Syntheses, Structures and Magnetic Properties
2016
A dinuclear [Ni2(L)2(DMSO)2(MeOH)2] (1) and a tetra-nuclear [Ni4(L)4(DMF)2(H2O)2].DMF (2) Ni(II) complexes have been prepared by treating nickel nitrate hexahydrate with the Schiff base ligand H2L (H2L=(E)-2-(2-hydroxybenzyliden)amino-4-nitrophenol) in a one-pot reaction. Complex 1 was obtained after recrystallization of the precipitate from the reaction with a 1:1:1 mixture of DMSO/CH2Cl2/MeOH. In contrast, the tetrameric complex 2 was obtained after slow evaporation of the filtrate. Both complexes were characterized by analytical, thermogravimetric, optical and magnetic techniques. The solid state molecular structures of 1 and 2 were determined by single crystal X-ray crystallography. Com…
Comparative Study of Different Methods for the Prediction of Drug–Polymer Solubility
2015
In this study, a comparison of different methods to predict drug-polymer solubility was carried out on binary systems consisting of five model drugs (paracetamol, chloramphenicol, celecoxib, indomethacin, and felodipine) and polyvinylpyrrolidone/vinyl acetate copolymers (PVP/VA) of different monomer weight ratios. The drug-polymer solubility at 25 °C was predicted using the Flory-Huggins model, from data obtained at elevated temperature using thermal analysis methods based on the recrystallization of a supersaturated amorphous solid dispersion and two variations of the melting point depression method. These predictions were compared with the solubility in the low molecular weight liquid ana…
Orthogonal cutting simulation of OFHC copper using a new constitutive model considering the state of stress and the microstructure effects
2016
International audience; This work aims to develop an orthogonal cutting model for surface integrity prediction, which incorporates a new constitutive model of Oxygen Free High Conductivity (OFHC) copper. It accounts for the effects of the state of stress on the flow stress evolution up to fracture. Moreover, since surface integrity parameters are sensitive to the microstructure of the work material, this constitutive model highlights also the recrystallization effects on the flow stress. Orthogonal cutting model is validated using experimental designed cutting tests. More accurate predictions were obtained using this new constitutive model comparing to the classical Johnson-Cook model.
Influence of M23C6 carbides on the heterogeneous strain development in annealed 420 stainless steel
2020
Understanding the local strain enhancement and lattice distortion resulting from different microstructure features in metal alloys is crucial in many engineering processes. The development of heterogeneous strain not only plays an important role in the work hardening of the material but also in other processes such as recrystallization and damage inheritance and fracture. Isolating the contribution of precipitates to the development of heterogeneous strain can be challenging due to the presence of grain boundaries or other microstructure features that might cause ambiguous interpretation. In this work a statistical analysis of local strains measured by electron back scatter diffraction and …
Synthesis of bi- and tricyclic β-lactam libraries in aqueous medium
2007
Water as a solvent is not only inexpensive and environmentally benign, but may allow good reactivity. The present work focuses on the application of a modified Ugi reaction, i.e. the Ugi four-centre three-component reaction (U-4C-3CR), in aqueous medium to construct β-lactam libraries. All the attempted reactions could be successfully performed in water. The reaction conditions under which the precipitation process was effective were investigated; no further work-up or purification was necessary. In several cases when less water-soluble β-amino acids were used, the precipitated products were isolated easily by simple filtration. In other cases, evaporation of the solvent was appropriate for…
Effect of stress and temperature on the thermomechanical degradation of a PE-LD/OMMT nanocomposites
2014
Thermomechanical degradation of nanocomposites is a topical issue that has not been fully investigated as demonstrated by the low number of papers available in the literature regarding this spe- cific aspect. In particular, with regards to low density polyethylene/clay nanocomposites, the degrada- tion behavior is very complex since it involves the degradation paths of both the polymer matrix and the organomodified nanoclay. In the present work, the effects of mechanical stress and temperature on the thermomechanical behavior of PE-LD/organomodified clay nanocomposites and the degradation paths were investigated by rheological, FT-IR and mechanical methods. The results have shown that the t…
An Appraisal by M.I.P of the Changes Induced in the Microstructure of Complex Sulfide Ores by Reactive Thermal Treatments in H2 and N2
1991
Summary Changes in the microstructure of complex sulfide ores resulting from reactive thermal treatments in either H2 or N2 were investigated qualitatively by combined scanning electron microscopy and X ray microanalysis, and quantitatively by mercury intrusion porosimetry (MIP) and mercury pycnometry. With increasing treatment temperature, we successively observed: 1) the development of fractures, preferentially at interfaces between the various mineral components, 2) the development of meso and macropores and the simultaneous swelling of the solids and 3) the crystallization or recrystallization of the metal or sufide phase products. In all cases the specific pore volume and mean pore dia…
