CHRIS/PROBA toolbox for hyperspectral and multiangular data exploitations

2009

The project CHRIS/Proba Toolbox for BEAM (CHRIS-Box) has been developed in order to support users of data from the CHRIS sensor onboard of ESA's Proba platform. BEAM and the CHRIS-Box are user tools which ESA/ESRTN are providing free of charge to the Earth Observation Community. The CHRIS-Box software provides extensions for BEAM that allows accomplishing the following tasks: a) Noise reduction to remove the vertical striping and other noise present in CHRIS response-corrected images; b) Cloud screening to mark cloudy pixels in CHRIS noise-corrected images; the cloud screening algorithm provides cloud probability and abundances for each pixel; c) Atmospheric correction that provides surface…

Stock earnings and bond yields in the US 1871–2017 : The story of a changing relationship

2021

Abstract Using historical data spanning almost 150 years, we examine whether there is a long-run equilibrium relationship between the stock's earnings and bond yields. The novelty of our econometric methodology consists in using a vector error correction model where we allow multiple structural breaks in the equilibrium relationship. The results of our analysis suggest the existence of an equilibrium relationship over 1871–1932 and 1958–2017. On the two historical segments, our analysis finds that the stock's earnings yield followed the bond yield in both the short run and long run, but not the other way around. Perhaps the most important and surprising finding of our empirical study is tha…

- EL EFECTO FISHER Y LA PARIDAD DE INTERÉS REAL. EVIDENCIA PARA LA ECONOMÍA ESPAÑOLA

1999

This paper provides an empirical test of the Fisher effect and of the real interest parity. The objetive is to determinate the behavior of the ex-ante real interest that condicionate the intertemporal savings and investment decisions. The method used is the time series properties of the data, which allows to separate estimation of the long-run equilibrium relationship from the nuisance parameters that characterize the short-run dynamics. The results find support inthe long run for a tax-adjusted Fisher hypothesis but not for the real interest parity. En este trabajo se contrasta empíricamente el cumplimiento de la hipótesis de Fisher y de la paridad de interés real para el caso español. El …

Price and volatility dynamics between electricity and fuel costs: Some evidence for Spain

2012

Abstract The purpose of this study is to investigate the causal linkages between the Spanish electricity, Brent crude oil and Zeebrugge (Belgium) natural gas 1-month-ahead forward prices. Following Lutkepohl et al. (2004), we control for the presence of a structural change in the series and then we use the Johansen cointegration test and a vector error correction model (VECM) to embrace the analysis. Additionally, a multivariate generalized autoregressive conditional heteroskedastic (GARCH) model is applied to explore volatility interactions between the three markets involved in the study. Our findings reveal that Brent crude oil and Zeebrugge natural gas forward prices play a prominent rol…

Wage leadership models: A country-by-country analysis of the EMU

2014

Abstract According to the theory of wage leadership, if there is free inter-sectoral labor mobility, changes in the level of the wage in the leading sector cause changes in the same direction in other sectors' wage. Moreover, since the traded sector (i.e. Industry) is affected by international competitive pressure, it should act as the leader, because this would be conducive to wage restraint. We apply a Vector Error Correction Model on four macro sectors (Industry, Services, Construction and the Public Sector) in ten EMU countries to test for wage leadership and wage adaptability. Our results show significant cross-country differences, with the Public Sector acting as the leader in Germany…

Effects of the European Monetary Union on High-Technology Exports

2021

AbstractOur study estimates the effects of the European Monetary Union (EMU) on high-technology (HT) export and assesses the potential knowledge spillovers of such trade. Irrespective of the importance of the HT trade channel, none of the previous studies in the literature focus on the effects of a common currency on HT trade. Increasing trade in the HT sector may lead to more efficient use of resources and help countries to move towards a knowledge-based economy. Moreover, it may lead to higher overall growth. After considering multilateral resistances, pair fixed effects and bias correction in the preferred (three-way bias-corrected) model, EMU membership becomes negative and statisticall…

Biorthonormal-basis method for the vector description of optical-fiber modes

1998

This paper gives the theoretical basis for the development of real vector modal methods to describe optical-fiber modes. To this end, the vector wave equations, which determine the electromagnetic fields, are written in terms of a pair of linear, nonself-adjoint operators, whose eigenvectors satisfy biorthogonality relations. The key of our method is to obtain a matrix representation of the vector wave equations in a basis that is defined by the modes of an auxiliary system. Our proposed technique can be applied to fibers with any profile, even those with a complex refractive index. An example is discussed to illustrate our approach.

An Embedded Fingerprints Classification System based on Weightless Neural Networks

2009

Automatic fingerprint classification provides an important indexing scheme to facilitate efficient matching in large-scale fingerprint databases in Automatic Fingerprint Identification Systems (AFISs). The paper presents a new fast fingerprint classification module implementing on embedded Weightless Neural Network (RAM-based neural network). The proposed WNN architecture uses directional maps to classify fingerprint images in the five NIST classes (Left Loop, Right Loop, Whorl, Arch and Tented Arch) without anyone enhancement phase. Starting from the directional map, the WNN architecture computes the fingerprint classification rate. The proposed architecture is implemented on Celoxica RC20…

Improvement of the thermal emissivity calculated with the vegetation cover method by using optical atmospherically corrected images

2007

In this paper we assess the influence caused by the lack of atmospheric correction of the optical images used to calculate land surface emissivity (LSE). When thermal emissivity is determined by the Vegetation Cover Method (VCM), information from the solar spectrum in order to calculate the vegetation cover fraction is required. The atmospheric correction is performed in this research by using the combination of the Dark Dense Vegetation method (DDV) and the Second Simulation of the Satellite Signal in the Solar Spectrum (6S) code. The methodology was applied to a Landsat TM image of Tomelloso, Spain. It was determined that the emissivity between 10 and 12 mum only increases 0.4% (which rep…
