A stabilized finite element method for particulate two-phase flow equations laminar isothermal flow
1997
A finite element method for the solution of particulate two-phase flows is presented. The governing system has the form of compressible Navier-Stokes equations with unknown pressure. Therefore, the proposed method must capture the main features of stabilized methods used for incompressible as well as for compressible Navier-Stokes equations. Solution of the resulting nonlinear algebraic system of equations is based on the linearization using Newton method in conjunction with Generalized Minimal Residual iterative solver and Incomplete LU preconditioning. The method has been tested for three test cases including venturi tube flow, flow over backward step and mixing of flows in t-junction.
Changes in Stress, Coping Styles, and Life Satisfaction between the First and Second Waves of the COVID-19 Pandemic: A Longitudinal Cross-Lagged Stud…
2021
In this study, we aimed to explain the interplay mechanism between stress, life satisfaction, and coping styles among university students. A cohort study was performed during the first (wave 1; W1) and second (wave 2; W2) waves of the Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. The total sample included 231 university students, of which 59.31% were women. The Satisfaction with Life Scale (SWLS), Perceived Stress Scale (PSS), and Coping Inventory for Stressful Situations (CISS) were included in one online survey. Stress, emotion-oriented, and avoidance-oriented coping styles increased from W1 to W2 of the COVID-19 pandemic, while life satisfaction and task-oriented coping decreased. The pa…

Analysis of four years of ceilometer-derived aerosol backscatter profiles in a coastal site of the western Mediterranean
2018
Abstract We present the analysis of four years of measurements by a CL51 ceilometer in Burjassot (39.51 N, 0.42 W), a research station in the western Mediterranean coast. The 1-min resolution profiles of the CL51 are corrected, calibrated, grouped and cloud-screened to create a 1-h resolution database of aerosol backscatter profiles at 910 nm (βa) spanning from July 2013 to August 2017. A total of 21,247 βa profiles are obtained, covering 58% of the considered period. The analysis of the βa profiles as a function of the main aerosol in the atmosphere reveals that dust arrives at Burjassot mainly in the form of elevated layers, with a highest impact between 1 and 4 km. The βa profiles obtain…
Mapping wild pear trees (Pyrus bourgaeana) in Mediterranean forest using high-resolution QuickBird satellite imagery
2012
Recent advances in spatial and spectral resolution of satellite imagery as well as in processing techniques are opening new possibilities of fine-scale vegetation analysis with interesting applications in natural resource management. Here we present the main results of a study carried out in Sierra Morena, Cordoba southern Spain, aimed at assessing the potential of remote-sensing techniques to discriminate and map individual wild pear trees Pyrus bourgaeana in Mediterranean open woodland dominated by Quercus ilex . We used high spatial resolution 2.4 m multispectral/0.6 m panchromatic QuickBird satellite imagery obtained during the summer of 2008. Given the size and features of wild pear tr…
Retrieving leaf area index from multi-angular airborne data
2009
This work is aimed to demonstrate the feasibility of a methodology for retrieving bio-geophysical variables whilst at the same time fully accounting for additional information on directional anisotropy. A model-based approach has been developed to deconvolve the angular reflectance into single landcovers reflectances, attempting to solve the inconsistencies of 1D models and linear mixture approaches. The model combines the geometric optics of large scale canopy structure with principles of radiative transfer for volume scattering within individual crowns. The reliability of the model approach to retrieve LAI has been demonstrated using data from DAISEX- 99 campaign at Barrax, Spain. Airborn…
A method for the atmospheric correction of ENVISAT/MERIS data over land targets
2007
An atmospheric correction algorithm for the retrieval of land surface reflectance from imagery acquired by the Medium Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (MERIS) on-board the European Space Agency (ESA) ENVIronmental SATellite (ENVISAT) platform has been implemented. The algorithm is designed to estimate the main atmospheric parameters needed in the correction, aerosol and water vapour contents, from the image itself, leading to an optimal characterization of the atmospheric state at the time of image acquisition. Once the atmospheric state has been defined, a second step deals with the retrieval of surface reflectance, accounting for the contribution of surface elevation and roughness as well …
Error sources on the land surface temperature retrieved from thermal infrared single channel remote sensing data
2006
In this paper, a theoretical study complementary to others given in the literature about the errors committed on the land surface temperature retrieved from the radiative transfer equation in the thermal infrared region by remote sensing techniques has been analysed. For this purpose, the MODTRAN 3.5 code has been used in order to simulate different conditions and evaluate the influence of several parameters on the land surface temperature accuracy: atmospheric correction, noise of the sensor, land surface emissivity, aerosols and other gaseous absorbers, angular effects, wavelength uncertainty, full‐width half‐maximum of the sensor and band‐pass effects. The results show that the most impo…
Proposal of a simple model for the characterization of aerosols in relation to the dominant air masses
2012
In this work, we present a simple model that allows us to easily obtain the character of the dominant air mass for any location in the Northern Hemisphere at any time. Specifically, in this article the model has been tested at Valencia, Spain, for the years from 2006 to 2009. The classification of the air masses is performed analysing their trajectories over pre-defined source regions in the Northern Hemisphere. Daily trajectories were simulated by the hybrid single-particle Lagrangian integrated trajectory model HYSPLIT and then classified by our model. In order to verify our classification results, those cases identified as African were compared with the Saharan dust intrusions reported f…
Mode superposition methods in dynamic analysis of classically and non-classically damped linear systems
1986
Mode-superposition analysis is an efficient tool for the evaluation of the response of linear systems subjected to dynamic agencies. Two well-known mode-superposition methods are available in the literature, the mode-displacement method and the mode-acceleration method. Within this frame a method is proposed called a dynamic correction method which evaluates the structural response as the sum of a pseudostatic response, which is the particular solution of the differential equations, and a dynamic correction evaluated using a reduced number of natural modes. The greater accuracy of the proposed method with respect to the other methods is evidenced through extensive numerical tests, for class…
