Surface Emissivity Retrieval From Airborne Hyperspectral Scanner Data: Insights on Atmospheric Correction and Noise Removal

2012

Airborne multispectral imagers have been used in validation campaigns in order to acquire very high spatial resolution data as a benchmark for current or future satellite data. Imagery acquired with such sensors implies specific data processing in relation to view-angle-dependent atmospheric correction and removal or minimization of stripping-based noise. It is necessary to appropriately perform this processing in order to benefit from reference imageries of surface temperature (T) and emissivity (e) maps retrieved from thermal infrared data. In particular, e images generated from T/e separation algorithms show undesirable noise that jeopardizes their photointerpretation. This letter addres…

Predictive Intelligent Fuzzy Control for Cooperative Motion of Two Nonholonomic Wheeled Cars

2007

In this paper a problem of intelligent cooperative motion control of two wheeled nonholonomic cars (target and follower) is considered. Once a target car converges to a fixed state (position and orientation), a follower car coming from different position and orientation, converges to the state above, without excessive delay between the known arrival time of the target car and the arrival time of the follower. In this sense we present a new predictive fuzzy control system. A Kalman's filter and an odometric model are used to predict the future position and orientation of the target car. The prediction above is employed to plane a circular nonholonomic reference motion for the follower car. A…

A parallel splitting up method and its application to Navier-Stokes equations

1991

A parallel splitting-up method (or the so called alternating-direction method) is proposed in this paper. The method not only reduces the original linear and nonlinear problems into a series of one dimensional linear problems, but also enables us to compute all these one dimensional linear problems by parallel processors. Applications of the method to linear parabolic problem, steady state and nonsteady state Navier-Stokes problems are given. peerReviewed

Overview of Other Results and Open Problems

2014

This chapter presents an overview of results related to error control methods, which were not considered in previous chapters. In the first part, we discuss possible extensions of the theory exposed in Chaps. 3 and 4 to nonconforming approximations and certain classes of nonlinear problems. Also, we shortly discuss some results related to explicit evaluation of modeling errors. The remaining part of the chapter is devoted to a posteriori estimates of errors in iteration methods. Certainly, the overview is not complete. A posteriori error estimation methods are far from having been fully explored and this subject contains many unsolved problems and open questions, some of which we formulate …

Data Compression with ENO Schemes: A Case Study

2001

Abstract We study the compresion properties of ENO-type nonlinear multiresolution transformations on digital images. Specific error control algorithms are used to ensure a prescribed accuracy. The numerical results reveal that these methods strongly outperform the more classical wavelet decompositions in the case of piecewise smooth geometric images.

Umbilicity of surfaces with orthogonal asymptotic lines in R4

2002

We study some properties of surfaces in 4-space all whose points are umbilic with respect to some normal field. In particular, we show that this condition is equivalent to the orthogonality of the (globally defined) fields of asymptotic directions. We also analyze necessary and sufficient conditions for the hypersphericity of surfaces in 4-space.  2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Evaluation of the AVHRR surface reflectance long term data record between 1984 and 2011

2021

Abstract The long-term data record (LTDR) from the Advanced Very High-Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) provides daily surface reflectance with global coverage from the 1980s to present day, making it a unique source of information for the study of land surface properties and their long-term dynamics. Surface reflectance is a critical input for the generation of products such as vegetation indices, albedo, and land cover. Therefore, it is of utmost importance to quantify its uncertainties to better understand how they might propagate into downstream products. Due to the prolonged length of the surface reflectance LTDR and previous unavailability of a well calibrated reference, no comprehensive …

Affine compensation of illumination in hyperspectral remote sensing images

2009

A problem when working with optical satellite or airborne images is the need to compensate for changes in the illumination conditions at the time of acquisition. This is particularly critical when working with time series of data. Atmospheric correction strategies based on radiative transfer codes may provide a rigorous solution but it may not be the best solution for situations where a huge amount of hyperspectral images may need to be processed and computational time is a critical factor. The GMES (”Global Monitoring for Environment and Security”) initiative has promoted the creation of a new generation of satellites (the SENTINEL series) with ”ultra-high resolution” and ”superspectral im…

A Novel Technique for Fingerprint Classification based on Fuzzy C-Means and Naive Bayes Classifier

2014

Fingerprint classification is a key issue in automatic fingerprint identification systems. One of the main goals is to reduce the item search time within the fingerprint database without affecting the accuracy rate. In this paper, a novel technique, based on topological information, for efficient fingerprint classification is described. The proposed system is composed of two independent modules: the former module, based on Fuzzy C-Means, extracts the best set of training images, the latter module, based on Fuzzy C-Means and Naive Bayes classifier, assigns a class to each processed fingerprint using only directional image information. The proposed approach does not require any image enhancem…

Searching for hidden sectors in multiparticle production at the LHC

2016

Most signatures of new physics in colliders have been studied so far on the transverse plane with respect to the beam direction. In this work however we study the impact of a hidden sector beyond the Standard Model (SM) on inclusive (pseudo)rapidity correlations and moments of the multiplicity distributions, with special emphasis in the LHC results.
