Evaluation of performance of a hybrid electro-optic directional coupler and a Mach–Zehnder switch

The efficiency of an electro-optic (EO) directional coupler (DC) and a Mach–Zehnder (MZ) switch is discussed. The specific designs employ a passive waveguide core and an EO cladding. The performance of a DC switch was evaluated by numerical methods, namely coupled mode theory (CMT), eigenmode expansion (EME) method, and beam envelope method. Using the CMT and EME methods, it is shown that in the DC with a passive waveguide core and EO cladding at certain waveguide parameters the switching effect does not take place. Design scheme for Mach–Zehnder interferometric coarse wavelength division multiplexing splitters and combiners

I propose an analytical approach to design flattened wavelength splitters with cascaded Mach–Zehnder inter- ferometers when wavelength dependence of the directional couplers cannot be neglected. I start from a geo- metrical representation of the action of a doubly point-symmetrical filter, assuming no wavelength dependence of the couplers. Next I derive the analytical formulas behind its working principle and extend them to the wavelength-dependent case. I also show how the geometrical representation allows one to broaden the class of working structures. © 2006 Optical Society of America

The Influence of a Magnetized Plasma Column on the Radiation Characteristics of a Strip Loop Antenna

The radiation characteristics of a circular loop antenna located on the surface of an open waveguide in the form of an axially magnetized plasma column are studied using the rigorously obtained current distribution of such an antenna. The radiation resistance of the antenna excited by a time-harmonic external voltage is obtained for the case where the plasma inside the column is resonant. The distribution of the radiated power over the spatial spectrum of the excited waves is found and discussed.

Switching quantum memory on and off

Modifying the Markovian (memoryless) or non-Markovian (memory-keeping) nature of the environment-induced evolution of an open quantum system is crucial in quantum information theory, because it is linked to quantum memory control. A recent work (Brito and Werlang 2015 New J. Phys. 17 072001) shows that such a goal can be achieved without operating on unaccessible environmental features. In fact, transitions between Markovian and non-Markovian regimes of a qubit dynamics can be induced on demand if the qubit is coupled to a controlled auxiliary system. This is a step towards the improvement of quantum devices, aiming at exploiting dynamical memory effects by an external control.

Energy Recovery of Multiple Charge Sharing Events in Room Temperature Semiconductor Pixel Detectors

Multiple coincidence events from charge-sharing and fluorescent cross-talk are typical drawbacks in room-temperature semiconductor pixel detectors. The mitigation of these distortions in the measured energy spectra, using charge-sharing discrimination (CSD) and charge-sharing addition (CSA) techniques, is always a trade-off between counting efficiency and energy resolution. The energy recovery of multiple coincidence events is still challenging due to the presence of charge losses after CSA. Apical intrusive growth of cambial fusiform initials along the tangential walls of adjacent fusiform initials: evidence for a new concept

A new study of cambium of Pinus sylvestris L., Tilia cordata Mill. and Wisteria floribunda (Willd.) DC provides fresh clues on the cambial dynamics, rejecting the hitherto held concept that intrusive growth of the fusiform initial occurs between the radial walls of adjacent initials. It demonstrates that intrusion of the elongating initial in fact takes place along tangential walls of adjacent fusiform initials and their immediate derivatives. The diffusion of wind energy generators is restricted by their strong landscape impact. The PERIMA project is about the development of an extensible wind tower able to support a wind machine for several hundred kW at its optimal working height, up to more than 50 m. Hourly Forecasting of SO2 Pollutant Concentration Using an Elman Neural Network

In this paper the first results produced by an Elman neural network for hourly SO2 ground concentration forecasting are presented. Time series has been recorded between 1998 and 2001 and are referred to a monitoring station of SO2 in the industrial site of Priolo, Syracuse, Italy. Data has been kindly provided by CIPA (Consorzio Industriale per la Protezione dell'Ambiente, Siracusa, Italia). Time series parameters are the horizontal and vertical wind velocity, the wind direction, the stability classes of Thomas, the base level of the layer of the atmospheric stability, the gradient of the potential temperature and the difference of the potential temperature of reference.
