Validity of the Mini-Nutritional Assessment Scale for Evaluating Frailty Status in Older Adults
2019
Objectives: Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment (CGA) may not be performed in clinical practice as it takes too much time and requires special training. The Mini-Nutritional Assessment (MNA) is widely used to assess nutritional status in older adults. We aimed to determine whether or not the MNA can estimate frailty status defined by the Fried criteria. Setting and Participants: Six hundred two outpatients aged 65 years or older who underwent the CGA were included the study. Measures: Frailty status was defined by 5 dimensions including shrinking, exhaustion, low levels of activity, weakness, and slowness: 0 for robust, 1–2 for prefrail, and 3–5 for frail. MNA was performed in all participan…
Deep sclerectomy versus trabeculectomy with low-dosage mitomycin C: four-year follow-up
2006
<i>Aims:</i> To compare the long-term effects of low-dosage mitomycin C (MMC) in both deep sclerectomy (DSMMC) and trabeculectomy (TPMMC) on intraocular pressure (IOP). <i>Methods:</i> Analysis of extended follow-up of data from a prospective clinical trial. Forty patients were originally randomised to undergo either DSMMC (19 eyes) or TPMMC (21 eyes). Follow-up was performed at postoperative day 1, weeks 1, 2 and 3, as well as months 1, 3, 6, 9, 12, 18, 24, 36 and 48. Two- to three-week data were not included in the statistical analysis. Postoperative complications, number of antiglaucoma medications and IOP were recorded at each visit. Complete (no medications) and…
ASSOCIATION OF AN ORGAN TRANSPLANT-BASED APPROACH WITH A DRAMATIC REDUCTION IN POSTOPERATIVE COMPLICATIONS FOLLOWING RADICAL NEPHRECTOMY AND TUMOR TH…
2019
Objectives: Our aim was to determine whether using an organ transplant-based(TB) approach reduces postoperative complications(PCs) following radical nephrectomy(RN) and tumor thrombectomy(TT) in renal cell carcinoma(RCC) patients with level II-IV thrombi. Methods: A total of 390(292 non-TB/98 TB) IRCC-VT Consortium patients who received no preoperative embolization/IVC filter were included. Stepwise linear/logistic regression analyses were performed to determine significant multivariable predictors of intraoperative estimated blood loss(IEBL), number blood transfusions received, and overall/major PC development within 30days following surgery. Propensity to receive the TB approach was contr…
Congenital renal arteriovenous malformation (aneurysmal type) in childhood.
1985
We report on a 9-year-old boy with a congenital renal arteriovenous fistula of the aneurysmal type, a form previously not observed in childhood. The clinical picture was unusual with severe arterial hypertension, excessive polyuria and decreased levels of serum sodium and chloride as main signs. Clinical and biochemical findings normalised after nephrectomy of the kidney involved.
Dietary Protein Intake and Falls in Older People: Longitudinal Analyses From the Osteoarthritis Initiative.
2019
Objectives: Literature regarding dietary protein intake and risk of falls is limited to a few studies with relatively small sample sizes and short follow-ups, which have reported contrasting findings. Thus, we investigated whether dietary protein intake is associated with risk of falls in a large cohort of North American adults. Design: Data were drawn from the Osteoarthritis Initiative, a cohort study, with 8 years of follow-up. Setting and participants: Community-dwelling adults with knee osteoarthritis or at high risk for this condition. Methods: Dietary protein intake was recorded using the Block Brief 2000 food frequency questionnaire and categorized using gender-specific quartiles (Q)…
Eubacterial PCR for Bacterial Detection and Identification in 100 Acute Postcataract Surgery Endophthalmitis
2008
International audience; PURPOSE: To evaluate eubacterial PCR compared with conventional cultures for detection and identification of bacterial agents in ocular samples from patients with acute postcataract endophthalmitis. METHODS: Broad-range eubacterial PCR amplification was used, followed by direct DNA sequencing in ocular samples (aqueous humor, vitreous samples from tap or vitrectomy) from 100 consecutive patients presenting with acute postcataract endophthalmitis. Bacterial cultures were performed on the same ocular samples by using traditional methods (brain-heart infusion broth). RESULTS: At the time of admission, the detection rate was not significantly different between cultures a…
Radical pleurectomy and chemoradiation for malignant pleural mesothelioma: The outcome of incomplete resections
2013
The type of surgery (radical pleurectomy (RP) vs. extrapleural pneumonectomy (EPP)) remains controversial for malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM). Macroscopic complete resection (MCR) is a key prognostic factor. It is unclear, if patients undergoing incomplete RP within a standardized multimodality treatment protocols have any advantage in terms of survival and if EPP could theoretically have avoided incomplete resections (R2).Eighty-eight patients underwent RP followed by chemoradiation from 2002 to 2011 within a prospective multimodality treatment study at a single institution. MCR were compared to R2 within this patient cohort retrospectively. EPP eligibility was assessed retrospectivel…
Prospective Study on Functional Results After Lung-Sparing Radical Pleurectomy in the Management of Malignant Pleural Mesothelioma
2012
Introduction:Malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM) can reduce lung function by entrapping lung parenchyma via a rind of tumor with or without concurrent effusion. Radical pleurectomy (RP) allows expansion of the trapped lung. The purpose of this study was to investigate changes in pulmonary function and lung perfusion in patients undergoing RP.Methods:In a prospective, nonrandomized study, all patients with histologically proven MPM were evaluated from January to December 2010 for trimodality therapy including RP as surgical procedure. Pulmonary-function tests and perfusion scans were obtained before and 2 months after RP. Primary end points were pulmonary function (forced vital capacity [FV…
Thoracic shaping technique to avoid residual space after extended pleurectomy/decortication
2013
Extended pleurectomy/decortication or radical pleurectomy is defined as a lung-sparing surgical procedure for malignant pleural mesothelioma. A significant size mismatch between the thoracic cavity and the reduced size of the remaining lung might occur as a result of multiple resections at different sites and lead to residual thoracic space. Residual thoracic space and significant air leakage might result in postoperative complications. A simple technique of diaphragm reconstruction to avoid the residual thoracic space and to reduce the incidence of postoperative complications is described.
miRNAs in the vitreous humor of patients affected by idiopathic epiretinal membrane and macular hole
2017
The aim of the present study was to assess the expression of miRNAs in the Vitreous Humor (VH) of patients with Macular Hole (MH) and Epiretinal Membrane (ERM) compared to a control group. In this prospective, comparative study, 2-ml of VH was extracted from the core of the vitreous chamber in consecutive patients who underwent standard vitrectomy for ERM and MH. RNA was extracted and TaqMan® Low Density Arrays (TLDAs) were used to profile the transcriptome of 754 miRNAs. Results were validated by single TaqMan® assays. Finally, we created a biological network of differentially expressed miRNA targets and their nearest neighbors.Overall 10 eyes with MH, 16 eyes with idiopathic ERM and 6 cont…
