Teaching Argumentation Theory and Practice: The Case of 12 Angry Men

The aim of this contribution is to illustrate how the pragmadialectical model of critical discussion may be explained and studied with the jurors' deliberations in the film 12 Angry Men. The film itself may be understood as an argument by example, and to defend this idea we take into consideration the thesis that the filmmaker wants to establish, the constraints of the medium, and the three classical perspectives on argumentation.

Comparison of parallel implementation of some multi-level Schwarz methods for singularly perturbed parabolic problems

Abstract Parallel multi-level algorithms combining a time discretization and an overlapping domain decomposition technique are applied to the numerical solution of singularly perturbed parabolic problems. Two methods based on the Schwarz alternating procedure are considered: a two-level method with auxiliary “correcting” subproblems as well as a three-level method with auxiliary “predicting” and “correcting” subproblems. Moreover, modifications of the methods using time extrapolation on subdomain interfaces are investigated. Obiettivo: riportare l’outcome obiettivo e soggettivo a lungo termine dopo colpoisterectomia con colpocleisi nelle donne avanti negli anni. Materiali e metodo: abbiamo condotto uno studio retrospettivo su 32 pazienti di età > 65 anni. Le caratteristiche delle pazienti, i dati dell’intervento e l’outcome obiettivo sono stati ottenuti dalla consultazione ambulatoriale delle cartelle cliniche delle pazienti. I dati soggettivi sono stati ottenuti mediante intervista telefonica standardizzata. Deletion of phenylalanine at position 508 (F508del) in the CFTR protein, is the most common mutation causing cystic fibrosis (CF). F508del causes misfolding and rapid degradation of CFTR protein a defect that can be targeted with pharmacological agents termed “correctors”. Correctors belong to various chemical classes but are generally small molecules based on nitrogen sulfur or oxygen heterocycles. Surgical treatment of pulmonary artery sarcoma

Abstract Objective: Pulmonary artery sarcomas are rare and usually fatal tumors. The diagnosis is difficult and delayed in most cases. Newer imaging techniques could allow early diagnosis in patients with symptoms of pulmonary vascular obstruction. Surgical resection improves clinical symptoms and offers the only chance of cure. We report the case histories of 7 patients with primary pulmonary artery sarcomas treated by surgical resection with or without adjuvant therapy. Methods: Seven patients (3 women and 4 men; mean age, 52.3 years; preoperative New York Heart Association functional class III/IV, n=5/2) underwent operations.
