A 6 day course of liposomal amphotericin B in the treatment of infantile visceral leishmaniasis: the Italian experience
2004
Objectives To evaluate in a retrospective analysis the efficacy and safety of a 6 day course of liposomal amphotericin B (L-AmB) in infantile cases of Mediterranean visceral leishmaniasis (VL) diagnosed over a 10 year period in Italy. Patients and methods Patients included were diagnosed as having VL consecutively admitted from December 1992 to December 2001 at four main referral children's hospitals in Italy and treated with six intravenous doses of 3 mg/kg L-AmB given on days 1-5 and 10 (a total dose of 18 mg/kg). Demographic data, nutritional status, underlying diseases, clinical and laboratory findings, and therapy outcome were considered. Results A total of 164 HIV-negative children (m…
Microlaparoscopic Hernia Repair in Children
2011
Introduction. This study reports the authors’ experience with the exclusive use of 2-mm instrument sets and small diameter scopes in 100 children undergoing microlaparoscopic herniorrhaphy. Method. This prospective study was designed as a pilot feasibility study; all data related to patients and procedures were prospectively collected. A pneumoperitoneum was established, and 1.7 to 2 mm 0° or 30° scopes were introduced for visualization. Exclusively 2-mm instruments were used. Results. This study included 100 children (aged 15 days to 11 years, median age 2.3 years) undergoing microlaparoscopic hernia repair. A total of 140 hernias were treated. The average operative time for the microlapa…
A Comparison of 2 Mitral Annuloplasty Rings for Severe Ischemic Mitral Regurgitation: Clinical and Echocardiographic Outcomes.
2016
Controversies regarding the choice of annuloplasty rings for treatment of ischemic mitral regurgitation still exist. Aim of the study is to compare early performance of 2 different rings in terms of rest and exercise echocardiographic parameters (transmitral gradient, systolic pulmonary artery pressure, and mitral valve area), clinical outcomes, and recurrence of mitral regurgitation. From January 2008 till December 2013, prospectively collected data of patients who underwent coronary artery bypass grafting and undersizing mitral valve annuloplasty for severe chronic ischemic mitral regurgitation at our Institution were reviewed. A total of 93 patients were identified; among them 44 had sem…
The prognosis of patients having received optimal therapy for nonvariceal upper gastrointestinal bleeding might be worse in daily practice than in ra…
2010
International audience; BACKGROUND: Combination of endoscopic haemostatic and high-dose intravenous proton-pump inhibitors is considered to be the standard care for patients with acute peptic ulcer bleeding. AIM: This study assessed predictive factors of rebleeding and death in unselected patients presented to our hospital. METHODS: Consecutive patients with nonmalignant bleeding ulcers and stigmata of recent haemorrhage who received optimal treatment, between 22 August 2003 and 15 October 2007, were studied retrospectively. RESULTS: Among 140 included patients, 45 (32%) rebled and 30 received another haemostatic endoscopy, which was successful in 20 cases. In multivariate analysis, the onl…

Results of a HOVON/SAKK donor versus no-donor analysis of myeloablative HLA-identical sibling stem cell transplantation in first remission acute myel…
2007
Abstract The Dutch-Belgian Hemato-Oncology Cooperative Group and the Swiss Group for Clinical Cancer Research (HOVON-SAKK) collaborative study group evaluated outcome of patients (pts) with acute myeloid leukemia (AML) in first remission (CR1) entered in 3 consecutive studies according to a donor versus no-donor comparison. Between 1987 and 2004, 2287 pts were entered in these studies of whom 1032 pts (45%) without FAB M3 or t(15;17) were in CR1 after 2 cycles of chemotherapy, received consolidation treatment, and were younger than 55 years of age and therefore eligible for allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (allo-SCT). An HLA-identical sibling donor was available for 326 pt…
Sustained complete hematologic remission after administration of the tyrosine kinase inhibitor imatinib mesylate in a patient with refractory, second…
2002
Abstract Imatinib mesylate, a tyrosine kinase inhibitor targeting bcr-abl, platelet-derived growth factor receptor (PDGF-R), and c-Kit, effectively induces hematologic and cytogenetic remissions in bcr-abl+ chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) and acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) with only mild to moderate side effects. Here, we describe the successful treatment of a 64-year-old man with c-Kit+ secondary acute myeloid leukemia (AML) refractory to standard chemotherapy. Upon 2 weeks of imatinib mesylate administration, the patient achieved a complete hematologic remission in peripheral blood. In addition, complete clearance of leukemic blasts in bone marrow and a significant cytogenetic response…
Comparing Natural History of Early and Late Onset Pediatric Multiple Sclerosis
2022
Objective: This study was undertaken to describe and compare disease course and prognosis of early (ie, disease onset before age 11 years) and late (ie, disease onset after age 11 years) onset pediatric multiple sclerosis. Methods: Prospectively collected clinical information from Italian Multiple Sclerosis Register of 1993 pediatric multiple sclerosis patients, of whom 172 had early onset, was analyzed. Cox models adjusted for sex, baseline Expanded Disability Status Scale score, and disease-modifying treatments and stratified for diagnostic criteria adopted (Poser vs McDonald) were used to assess the risk of reaching irreversible Expanded Disability Status Scale scores of 3, 4, and 6, and…
Long-term outcome of ventral buccal mucosa onlay graft urethroplasty for urethral stricture repair
2004
Abstract Objectives To evaluate our patients who were treated with ventral buccal mucosa onlay grafts for open urethral stricture repair with a follow-up exceeding 5 years. Buccal mucosa onlay is widely used for urethral reconstruction; however, the long-term outcome of these patients remains unclear. Methods During the past 10 years, 67 patients underwent ventral buccal mucosa onlay graft surgery for urethral stricture repair. Of these, 32 were followed up for longer than 5 years (mean 6.9 years) for the occurrence and timing of any postoperative complications. All patients had undergone prior internal urethrotomy (mean 2.9 procedures), and the average length of the stricture was 4.3 cm (r…
Tamibarotene in patients with acute promyelocytic leukaemia relapsing after treatment with all-trans retinoic acid and arsenic trioxide
2015
Treatment of acute promyelocytic leukaemia (APL) with arsenic trioxide (ATO) and all-trans retinoic acid (ATRA) is highly effective first-line therapy, although approximately 5-10% of patients relapse. Tamibarotene is a synthetic retinoid with activity in APL patients who relapse after chemotherapy and ATRA, but has not been studied in relapse after treatment with ATO and ATRA. We report on a phase II study of tamibarotene in adult patients with relapsed or refractory APL after treatment with ATRA and ATO (n = 14). Participants were treated with tamibarotene (6 mg/m(2) /d) during induction and for up to six cycles of consolidation. The overall response rate was 64% (n = 9), the rate of comp…
