Reoperation for persistent or recurrent secondary hyperparathyroidism. Surgical treatment of renal hyperparathyroidism

2017

Background: Secondary hyperparathyroidism is a common acquired disorder seen in chronic renal failure. Its pathophysiology is mainly due to hyperphosphatemia and vitamin D deficiency and resistance. When medical treatment fails, subtotal and total parathyroidectomy with autotransplantation are the standard procedures, although both are associated with high recurrence rates. Methods and Results: 4 patients experienced persistence and 9 relapse. The first 4 were subjected to reoperation after 6 months for the persistence of symptoms due to the finding of a supernumerary adenomatous gland while the remaining patients at the reoperation showed in 5 cases 2 more glands in over thymic position, a…

Bronchiektasen und Infekthäufigkeit bei Alpha-1-Antitrypsin-Mangel

1995

UNLABELLED PURPOSE of this study was to determine the prevalence of bronchiectasis in patients suffering from alpha-1-antitrypsin deficiency and to compare its extent with the frequency of infections. MATERIAL AND METHODS High-resolution CT examinations (HRCT) of 23 patients with alpha-1-antitrypsin deficiency were retrospectively assessed for extent, severity and localisation of bronchiectasis, bronchial wall thickening and extent of emphysema. Chest radiographs and clinical records were available for correlation. RESULTS HRCT scans showed bronchiectasis in 14 of 23 patients, bronchial wall thickening in 3/14, and panlobular emphysema in 23/23. Chest radiographs showed bronchiectasis in 4/…

Embryo Aneuploidy Screening for Unexplained Recurrent Miscarriage: A Minireview

2005

Problem:  The aim of this study was to investigate the incidence of chromosomal abnormalities in unexplained recurrent miscarriage (RM) patients and assess the role of pre-implantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) in preventing subsequent pregnancy loss and improving pregnancy outcome. Method of Study:  Pre-implantation genetic diagnosis was performed in 241 RM cycles and in 35 cycles in patients undergoing PGD for sex-linked diseases (control group). Chromosomes 13, 16, 18, 21, 22, X and Y were analysed by fluorescence in situ hybridization. Results:  The implantation and pregnancy rates in RM patients were 26.4 and 36.5% versus 20.6 and 29.0% in the control group, respectively. The percentage …

Progression-free survival (PFS) as a surrogate endpoint for overall survival (OS) in advanced/recurrent gastric cancer (AGC) treatment: Individual-pa…

2020

e16506 Background: In 2013, the GASTRIC (Global Advanced/Adjuvant Stomach Tumor Research through International Collaboration) evaluated the surrogacy of PFS based on IPD of 4,069 patients from 20 randomized trials of AGC. Treatment effects on PFS and on OS were only moderately correlated, and we could not validate PFS as a surrogate endpoint for OS. More recent trials, with refined inclusion criteria and higher standards for evaluating progression, may allow for a more accurate estimate of the correlation. The 2nd round of the GASTRIC sought to re-evaluate the surrogacy of PFS for OS in AGC. Methods: The GASTRIC database was updated with trials published after 2010 which used RECIST (Respo…

MFCC-based Recurrent Neural Network for automatic clinical depression recognition and assessment from speech

2022

Abstract Clinical depression or Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) is a common and serious medical illness. In this paper, a deep Recurrent Neural Network-based framework is presented to detect depression and to predict its severity level from speech. Low-level and high-level audio features are extracted from audio recordings to predict the 24 scores of the Patient Health Questionnaire and the binary class of depression diagnosis. To overcome the problem of the small size of Speech Depression Recognition (SDR) datasets, expanding training labels and transferred features are considered. The proposed approach outperforms the state-of-art approaches on the DAIC-WOZ database with an overall accura…

Effects of natural extracts in the treatment of oral ulcers: A systematic review of evidence from experimental studies in animals

2021

Background To evaluate the clinical and histopathological effects of natural extracts in the treatment of oral ulcers induced in animal experimental models. Material and methods We carried out a search in the Medline, Scopus, WoS and Embase databases from the start of the databases to December 2020, and also made a manual search of the references. The search and selection were carried out by two researchers independently. The inclusion criteria were: experimental studies in animal models, in english, which complied with the study object. Results A total of 705 articles were identified. After selection by title, abstract and full text, 19 articles were finally included. Natural extracts of J…

Preamble Transmission Prediction for mMTC Bursty Traffic : A Machine Learning based Approach

2020

The evolution of Internet of things (IoT) towards massive IoT in recent years has stimulated a surge of traffic volume among which a huge amount of traffic is generated in the form of massive machine type communications. Consequently, existing network infrastructure is facing challenges when handling rapidly growing traffic load, especially under bursty traffic conditions which may more often lead to congestion. By proactively predicting the occurrence of congestion, we can implement necessary means and conceivably avoid congestion. In this paper, we propose a machine learning (ML) based model for predicting successful preamble transmissions at a base station and subsequently forecasting th…

Food-additive-induced urticaria: a survey of 838 patients with recurrent chronic idiopathic urticaria

2005

Background: Recurrent chronic idiopathic urticaria (RCIU) is a common skin condition that affects 0.1–3% of the population in the USA and Europe and accounts for nearly 75% of all ‘ordinary’ chronic urticaria (CU) cases. Methods: We studied 838 consecutive patients with RCIU referred to hospital between 1998 and 2003. Patients with known causes of CU were excluded. Clinical history, physical examination, and symptom diaries were evaluated during two periods, a diet-free period (1 week) and a food-additive-free diet (FAFD) period (4 weeks), respectively, and two double-blind placebo-controlled (DBPC) challenges of six food additives were administered. Th…
