Radical Rings with Engel Conditions

Abstract An associative ring R without unity is called radical if it coincides with its Jacobson radical, which means that the set of all elements of R forms a group denoted by R ∘  under the circle operation r  ∘  s  =  r  +  s  +  rs on R . It is proved that, for a radical ring R , the group R ∘  satisfies an n -Engel condition for some positive integer n if and only if R is m -Engel as a Lie ring for some positive integer m depending only on n .

Associative rings whose adjoint semigroup is locally nilpotent

The set of all elements of an associative ring R, not necessarily with a unit element, forms a semigroup R ad under the circle operation \({r\circ s}={r+s+rs}\) on R. The ring R is called radical if R ad is a group. It is proved that the semigroup R ad is nilpotent of class n (in sense of A. Mal'cev or B. H. Neumann and T. Taylor) if and only if the ring R is Lie-nilpotent of class n. This yields a positive answer to a question posed by A. Krasil'nikov and independently considered by D. Riley and V. Tasic. It is also shown that the adjoint group of a radical ring R is locally nilpotent if and only if R is locally Lie-nilpotent.

A general procedure for the construction of Gorges polygons for multi-phase windings of electrical machines

This paper presents a simple and effective procedure for the determination of the Gorges polygon, suitable for all possible winding configurations in electrical machines. This methodology takes into account the determination of a Winding Distribution Table (WDT), in which all the information about the distribution of the currents along the stator periphery is computed and from which the Görges polygon are easily derived. The proposed method can be applied to both symmetrical and asymmetrical multi-phase windings, including concentrated, fractional, reduced and dead-coil ones. The examples provided in this paper demonstrate the versatility of the proposed method.

Overcoming the crisis : the changing profile and trajectories of Latvian migrants

The work was funded by the National Research Programme [grant number 5.2.4] and the Latvian Council of Sciences [grant number 514/2012]. Taking mobility between Latvia and Western Europe as an empirical lens, this analysis explores the complex relationship between spatial disparities in earning potential and migration. The very dramatic shifts in the economic and political context against which migration from Latvia has occurred over the period 2004-2012 make it an especially apposite focus of research investigating the link between mobility and labour market circumstances. A Multisite Preregistered Paradigmatic Test of the Ego-Depletion Effect

We conducted a preregistered multilaboratory project ( k = 36; N = 3,531) to assess the size and robustness of ego-depletion effects using a novel replication method, termed the paradigmatic replication approach. Each laboratory implemented one of two procedures that was intended to manipulate self-control and tested performance on a subsequent measure of self-control. Confirmatory tests found a nonsignificant result ( d = 0.06). Confirmatory Bayesian meta-analyses using an informed-prior hypothesis (δ = 0.30, SD = 0.15) found that the data were 4 times more likely under the null than the alternative hypothesis. Health endowment and later-life outcomes in the labour market : Evidence using genetic risk scores and reduced-form models

This paper examines the relationship between health endowment and later-life outcomes in the labour market. The analysis is based on reduced-form models in which labour market outcomes are regressed on genetic variants related to the increased risk of cardiovascular diseases. We use linked Finnish data that have many strengths. Genetic risk scores constitute exogenous measures for health endowment, and accurate administrative tax records on earnings, employment and social income transfers provide a comprehensive account of an individual’s long-term performance in the labour market. ROTOR FLUX OPTIMAL ESTIMATION FOR INDUCTION MOTOR CONTROL

Abstract The aim of this paper is to analyze and design reduced order observers of the rotor flux of induction motors. The design requirements are: a) the convergence rate of the rotor flux estimation error; b) a low sensitivity to stator and rotor resistance variations; c) a low sensitivity to errors due to the implementation of the observers on microprocessor-based systems. It is shown that, in order to satisfy the requirements a)-c), it is sufficient to solve a constrained optimization problem according to a criterion in which these requirements appear explicitly. The implementation of the observer is discussed. The observer is tested by simulation and experiments.

Design and Sensitivity Analysis of a Reduced-Order Rotor Flux Optimal Observer for Induction Motor Control

This paper aims to give simple and effective design criteria of rotor flux reduced-order observers for motion control systems with induction motors. While the observer is optimized for rotor and stator resistance variations, a sensitivity analysis is carried out in the presence of variations of all the motor parameters by means of either transfer function from true to observed rotor flux or simulation in a MATLAB-SIMULINK environment, assuming the voltages supplying the motor to be different from those supplying the observer. Sensorless control of PMSM by a linear neural network: TLS EXIN neuron

Sensorless vector control applied to the Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motors (PMSMs) is a very challenging subject. It permits obtaining high dinamical performance by exploiting increased reliability and also reduced cost. Among the different methodologies proposed in literature, a model based approach has been proposed here. In particular, the space vector equations of the PMSM have been re-elaborated to permit the use of a Least Squares technique. The problem has been then faced-up to with the so-called TLS EXIN neuron, which is a linear neural network able to solve the TLS problem on-line. Simulation tests have been done on both interior mounted and surface mounted machines.

Fast Estimation of Diffusion Tensors under Rician noise by the EM algorithm

Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) is widely used to characterize, in vivo, the white matter of the central nerve system (CNS). This biological tissue contains much anatomic, structural and orientational information of fibers in human brain. Spectral data from the displacement distribution of water molecules located in the brain tissue are collected by a magnetic resonance scanner and acquired in the Fourier domain. After the Fourier inversion, the noise distribution is Gaussian in both real and imaginary parts and, as a consequence, the recorded magnitude data are corrupted by Rician noise.
