Stationary and pulsating dissipative light bullets from a collective variable approach

A collective variable approach is used to map domains of existence for (3+1) -dimensional spatiotemporal soliton solutions of a complex cubic-quintic Ginzburg-Landau equation. A rich variety of evolution behaviors, which include stationary and pulsating dissipative soliton dynamics, is revealed. Comparisons between the results obtained by the semianalytical approach of collective variables, and those obtained by a purely numerical approach show good agreement for a wide range of equation parameters. Active reduction of fluctuations in fourth-order modulation instability

International audience; We experimentally study the fluctuation properties of a scalar fourth-order modulation instability process obtained by pumping a photonic crystal fiber in the normal dispersion region. We observe large wavelength-dependant pulse-to-pulse fluctuations which cannot be significantly reduced by stimulating the process with a single seed. Their reduction requires two seeds slightly detuned from the maximum gain frequency in order to also stimulate the second-order modulation instability process cascaded from the fourth-order one. This concept is validated by experiments and numerical simulations.

Reduced dynamical equations for solid-state lasers and VCSELs

2007

It is the aim of this presentation to show that a reduction in the number of coupled equations is feasible for spatio-temporal laser models with generic values of the pump and other parameters. Reduced equations have been derived via the application of two separate, yet equivalent, methods: one based on the CM and the other on operational calculus. The long term dynamics of the reduced models for solid-state lasers and VCSELs have been compared with that of the full systems by using both mathematical methods. Extensive numerical simulations for the complex dynamics of these and other laser models become suddenly feasible within reasonable computational time.

The Performance of Belle II Data Acquisition System in the First Physics Run

The Belle II experiment is a new generation B-factory experiment at KEK in Japan aiming at the search for New Physics in a huge sample of B-meson dacays. The commissioning of the SuperKEKB accelerator was started in 2017 (Phase 1), and then a pilot run with outer detectors was performed in 2018 (Phase 2). From March this year, an operation with the full detector has been started for the physics data taking (Phase 3). The Belle II data acquisiton system (DAQ) is now fully working in the Phase 3 run. Ultrasonic characterisation of poroux materials

International audience; Acoustic models of the acoustics of porous and perforated media involve a set of physical parameters. Some of the parameters, the tortusity, the viscous and thermal characteristic lengths are defined for a perfect incompressible and inviscid fluid saturating the porous medium. It is shown that ultrasonic propagation in air-saturated materials can be used to determine these parameters. A basic method involving air-coupled ultrasonic transducers is presented. Variants of this method and a practical implementation of one of these is proposed.

Unsupervised deep feature extraction of hyperspectral images

This paper presents an effective unsupervised sparse feature learning algorithm to train deep convolutional networks on hyperspectral images. Deep convolutional hierarchical representations are learned and then used for pixel classification. Features in lower layers present less abstract representations of data, while higher layers represent more abstract and complex characteristics. Objective improvement of the visual quality of ion microscope images

The need to operate with low ion beam fluences implies the images obtained using ion microscope (IM) are often grainy and have poor visual quality compared to what can be obtained using e.g. confocal microscopy. This results from the Poissonian distribution of counts in pixels. Here we report work on some different approaches for objectively improving the visual quality of IM images. The objective of Selective Change Driven (SCD) Vision is to capture and process those scene pixels that have the greatest impact in the motion estimation task. The implemented SCD Vision sensor delivers the pixels ordered according to the illumination change undergone by each pixel, from the last time each pixel was read-out. This ordering strategy is especially interesting for motion detection algorithms, since it allows for a reduction in data bandwidth requirements without decreasing accuracy.
