Radiation Shielding Study of Advanced Data and Power Management Systems (ADPMS) Housing Using Geant4
2008
The tendency to reduce the spacecraft mass covers nowadays all components of the spacecraft. One potential target is to reduce the mass of electronics and its housings. The use of composite materials, especially CFRP is a well known and vastly used approach to mass reduction. In cost reduction the use of standard (non-space qualified) electronics has increased. These commercial circuits and other components cannot tolerate as high radiation levels as space qualified components. Therefore the use of standard electronics components poses challenge in terms of the radiation protection capability of the ADPMS housings. The main goal of this study is to give an insight on the radiation shielding…
Electrochemical conversion of carbon dioxide in pressurized electrochemical cells
2019
To limit the negative effect of carbon dioxide as a greenhouse gas, an interesting approach is the utilization of Carbon Capture and Conversion (CCC) methodology, which is focused on the use of CO2 waste as a feedstock to produce added-value products by using the excess electric energy from renewable source [1]. In this framework, an increasing attention has been devoted to the electrochemical conversion of carbon dioxide to formic acid in water [2-3] or CO [1]. Since the main hurdle of the CO2 reduction from aqueous solution is the low CO2 solubility in water, in this work, the utilization of pressurized electrochemical cells is evaluated. The effect of various operating parameters, includ…
Multivariate denoising methods combining wavelets and principal component analysis for mass spectrometry data
2010
The identification of new diagnostic or prognostic biomarkers is one of the main aims of clinical cancer research. In recent years, there has been a growing interest in using mass spectrometry for the detection of such biomarkers. The MS signal resulting from MALDI-TOF measurements is contaminated by different sources of technical variations that can be removed by a prior pre-processing step. In particular, denoising makes it possible to remove the random noise contained in the signal. Wavelet methodology associated with thresholding is usually used for this purpose. In this study, we adapted two multivariate denoising methods that combine wavelets and PCA to MS data. The objective was to o…
Effect of flupirtine on Bcl-2 and glutathione level in neuronal cells treated in vitro with the prion protein fragment (PrP106-126).
1997
Flupirtine, trade name Katadolon, is a centrally acting nonopioid analgesic that has recently been found to display cytoprotective activity in vitro and in vivo on neurons induced to undergo apoptosis. This report shows that the PrP106-126 fragment of the prion protein, which is the likely etiological agent for a series of encephalopathies, is toxic to cortical neurons in vitro. Simultaneously, PrP106-126 influences the molecular GSH content and the bcl-2 expression in neurons. Significant toxicity (32% reduction in cell viability) was observed at a concentration of 50 microM of the peptide after 9 days of incubation, while at higher concentrations toxicity increased to 70%. Neurotoxicity w…
Silver nanoparticles stabilized by a polyaminocyclodextrin as catalysts for the reduction of nitroaromatic compounds
2015
Abstract Silver nanoparticles stabilized by means of poly -(6- N , N -dimethyl-propylenediamino)-(6-deoxy)-β-cyclodextrin were synthesized, characterized by different techniques (UV–vis spectroscopy, Dynamic Light Scattering, High Resolution Transmission Electron Microscopy, Fourier-transform IR Spectroscopy) and used as catalysts for the reduction of various nitrobenzene derivatives with sodium borohydride. The nanocomposites obtained appear to have an organized structure, with a metal core surrounded by a layer-structured coating shell. Kinetic data, rationalized in terms of a modified Langmuir–Hinshelwood model, evidenced a non-linear dependence of the reaction rate on the concentration …
Co3O4/CeO2 composite oxides for methane emissions abatement: Relationship between Co3O4–CeO2 interaction and catalytic activity
2006
Abstract Co 3 O 4 /CeO 2 composite oxides with different cobalt loading (5, 15, 30, 50, 70 wt.% as Co 3 O 4 ) were prepared by co-precipitation method and investigated for the oxidation of methane under stoichiometric conditions. Pure oxides, Co 3 O 4 and CeO 2 were used as reference. Characterization studies by X-ray diffraction (XRD), BET, temperature programmed reduction/oxidation (TPR/TPO) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) were carried out. An improvement of the catalytic activity and thermal stability of the composite oxides was observed with respect to pure Co 3 O 4 in correspondence of Co 3 O 4 –CeO 2 containing 30% by weight of Co 3 O 4 . The combined effect of cobalt oxide…
Pathways to higher education for first and second generation immigrants in France, Switzerland and Canada: how educational tracks and aspirations mat…
2014
Despite their different histories as countries of immigration, Switzerland, France and Canada all have a sizeable immigrant population, some of which do experience obstacles in their educational and professional careers. However, both access rates of immigrant students as well as institutional routes to higher education vary remarkably between the three countries. On the one hand, France and Switzerland offer both academic and vocational routes to higher education, whereas academic routes prevail in Canada. On the other hand, immigrant students are underrepresented in Swiss and French higher education, while they generally seem to be much more successful in Canada. In this paper we wish to …
Biological activities of the LXRα and β agonist, 4β-hydroxycholesterol, and of its isomer, 4α-hydroxycholesterol, on oligodendrocytes: effects on cel…
2013
The biochemical and biological properties of 4β-hydroxycholesterol and of its isomer, 4α-hydroxycholesterol, are not well known. So, we determined the ability of 4α- and 4β-hydroxycholesterol to react with LXRα and LXRβ, and we characterized the activities of these oxysterols on oligodendrocytes which are myelin synthesizing cells. The effects of 4α- and 4β-hydroxycholesterol were studied on 158N murine oligodendrocytes to assess their activities on cell growth and viability, oxidative and inflammatory status. To this end different parameters were used: cell counting with trypan blue; identification of dead cells and cell cycle analysis with propidium iodide; evaluation of mitochondrial dep…
Prevention of 7-ketocholesterol-induced side effects by natural compounds
2018
Cholesterol oxidation products, also named oxysterols, can be formed either by cholesterol auto-oxidation, enzymatically or both. Among these oxysterols, 7-ketocholesterol (7KC) is mainly formed during radical attacks that take place on the carbon 7 of cholesterol. As increased levels of 7KC have been found in the tissues, plasma and/or cerebrospinal fluid of patients with major diseases, especially age-related diseases (cardiovascular diseases, eye diseases, neurodegenerative diseases), some cancers, and chronic inflammatory diseases, it is suspected that 7KC, could contribute to their development. Since 7KC, provided by the diet or endogenously formed, is not or little efficiently metabol…
Side effects of oxysterols: cytotoxicity, oxidation, inflammation, and phospholipidosis.
2008
Oxysterols are 27-carbon atom molecules resulting from autoxidation or enzymatic oxidation of cholesterol. They are present in numerous foodstuffs and have been demonstrated to be present at increased levels in the plasma of patients with cardiovascular diseases and in atherosclerotic lesions. Thus, their role in lipid disorders is widely suspected, and they might also be involved in important degenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's disease, osteoporosis, and age-related macular degeneration. Since atherosclerosis is associated with the presence of apoptotic cells and with oxidative and inflammatory processes, the ability of some oxysterols, especially 7-ketocholesterol and 7β-hydrox…
