Cultural Values’ Influences on Users’ Preferences for Gamification Techniques
2019
Gamification techniques such as badges, levels, roles, are widely adopted in information systems (IS). Though researchers have noted that cultural values may influence users' usage of IS, there is a lack of research regarding the relationship of cultural values and gamification techniques. Our study aims to contribute to this area. We propose that users' cultural values may influence how they are motivated and further influence their preferences toward specific gamification techniques. In this research in progress, we review cultural values, examine the currently adopted gamification techniques, and then propose how cultural values influence users' preferences toward specific gamification t…
Music preferences based on audio features, and its relation to personality
2009
Recent studies have summarized reported music preferences by genre into four broadly defined categories, which relate to various personality characteristics. Other research has indicated that genre classification is ambiguous and inconsistent. This ambiguity suggests that research relating personality to music preferences based on genre could benefit from a more objective definition of music. This problem is addressed by investigating how music preferences linked to objective audio features relate to personality. Participants (N = 354; 165 males) completed a personality measure and rated their preference to 120 music clips from various music (sub-)genres (e.g., classical, rock). Principle C…
Emotion, Personality, Use of Music In Everyday Life and Musical Preferences
2013
The use of music in everyday life (UofM) is an area with growing interest. Scales for the measurement can be criticized despite their reliability and validity. Additionally, the association of UofM with personality theories has not been carried out thoroughly. Within an ongoing project, the IAAM (Inventory for the measurement of Activation and Arousal modulation by Music) has been constructed. Within the existing study, the reliability and validity of the IAAM-scales are to be examined. The assignment of the IAAM-scales to the biological based BIS-BAS-model (Gray & McNaughton, 2000) should be proven against the explanation of the IAAM-scales by the personality model of Eysenck (1967). Związek agresji, wybranych czynników osobowościowych oraz preferencji kategorii filmów pornograficznych
2018
Przeprowadzono badanie eksploracyjne w celu zbadania predyktorów oglądania pornografii z uwzględnieniem jej kategorii. Wzięło w nim udział 136 osób. Z 25 zaproponowanych najpopularniejszych słów kluczowych używanych do wyszukiwania pornografii w Internecie, wystarczająco licznymi okazało się 8 kategorii: „amatorki”, „BDSM”, „hardcore”, „lesbijki”, „nastolatki”, „seks analny”, „seks oralny” i „seks grupowy”. Potwierdzono 3 z 5 hipotez.
Binds of Professionalism: Attachment in Australian and Finnish Early Years Policy
2016
Attachment theory is often referenced in psychology, social work and early childhood care and education, and is ubiquitous in popular publications directed to parents, carers and educators of young children. It is considered as a ‘grand theory’ that explains “the growth of social relationships from infants’ experiences with their caregivers and the consequent social preference called attachment” (Mercer, 2011, p. 26). In this chapter, we understand attachment theory as a discourse and as part of the ‘psy-complex’, “the sprawling speculative and regulative network of theories and practices that constitute psychology” (Parker, 2002, p. 199). We focus on the operation of ‘attachment discourses…
Challenge types in gaming validation of video game challenge inventory (CHA)
2020
Challenge is a key motivation for videogame play. But what kind of challenge types videogames include, and which of them players prefer? This article helps to answer the above questions by developing and validating Videogame Challenge Inventory (CHA), a psychometrically sound measurement for investigating players’ challenge preferences in videogames. Based on a review of literature, we developed a 38-item version of CHA that was included in a social media user survey (N = 813). An exploratory factor analysis (EFA) revealed a latent structure of five challenge types: Physical, Analytical, Socioemotional, Insight, and Foresight. CHA was amended in another EFA with USA-based survey data (N = 5…
La necesaria rehabilitación del sistema representativo en las propuestas de reforma democrática
2010
In the debates on deliberative democracy it’s a common idea that the defenders of this theory argue for the direct participation of the citizens in the political issues and for the transformation of our current representative devices. However, in this work I argue that this conception is misguided, and that it’s the minority who defends the direct participation. The majority of the writers acknowledges the necessity of a representative device, although based on different premises to the liberal system. The deliberative democracy supports a responsible and compromised citizenship, against the model of self interested citizenship.

En los debates sobre la democracia delibera…
Rédiger pour être publié ! 2e édition 2012
2012
Publish or perish. This saying clearly exemplifies that science communication is vital for scientists, research bodies and nation competitiveness. Nowadays both computers and internet have deeply changed the way scientific articles are written and published. In an editorial world moving at accelerated pace, scientists are eager to get their papers published in the best journals because impact factors are ruling careers and funding. Since fundings are provided by various public and private bodies, scientific papers should be partly understandable by a wide audience from journalists to entrepreneurs, political leaders and the general public. However, as an editor of scientific journals, I obs…
Albanian students’ motives for preferring certain real-life situations for learning mathematics
2011
This article reports on a qualitative investigation of Albanian students’ motives for preferring certain real-life situations to be used in school mathematics, and possible connections of these motives to characteristics and issues within Albanian society. It is based on realistic interviews with students from Grades 8 and 9 in a school in the district of Shkodra in northern Albania. Interviews were conducted after students experienced five teaching units which dealt with mathematics embedded in real-life situations. Results are expressed in terms of contextmechanism-outcome configurations as proposed by critical realist theory. Most of the resultsare supported by those from a previous quan…
