This article is about the important role of the referendum and that the citizens’ voice is also important. The fundamental principle of democracy is direct democracy, where citizens must have the right to vote on important matters for the society. It is worth noting that the importance of democracy is permanent. There are permanent institutions of democracy, for example a local referendum. This means that the local authority asks citizens what they think about important matters. It is important to properly regulate it, because it is the basis of the state’s system. Democracy without a referendum is dangerous because it is not real.

People construct meaning by telling stories, so what are the stories told in Austrian, German and Swiss media about the 2016 EU referendum? They are stories of catastrophe and tragedy; of politicians characterized as working for their parties and careers, not for the public; stories of right-wing populism and nationalism, constructing illusions about the nation’s history; descriptions of responsibilities and the enormous causes and consequences of the EU referendum; stories of the incredible threats to society, democracy and the state; and definitions of what needs to be done now in the EU and UK in order to improve people’s lives.

Maģistra darbā „Pašvaldību referendumu ieviešana Latvijā” ir vērtēts, vai, ņemot vērā Latvijas valsts pārvaldes iekārtu un formu, kā arī demokrātisko attīstību, būtu nepieciešams ieviest pašvaldību referendumus kā tiešās demokrātijas līdzekli, kas uzlabotu un veicinātu vietējo pašvaldību iedzīvotāju iesaisti lēmumu pieņemšanas procesā. Ņemot vērā to, ka līdz šim jau ir bijuši vairāki mēģinājumi ieviest pašvaldību referendumus, taču visai neveiksmīgi, tas rada neskaidrību par iemesliem, kāpēc vairāk nekā divu dekāžu laikā nav izdevies pieņemt attiecīgu regulējumu. How representative are referendums? Evidence from 20 years of Swiss referendums

Direct democracy allows citizens to reverse decisions made by legislatures and even initiate new laws which parliaments are unwilling to pass, thereby, as its proponents argue, leading to more representative policies than would have obtained under a purely representative democracy. Yet, turnout in referendums is usually lower than in parliamentary elections and tends to be skewed towards citizens of high socio-economic status. Consequently, critics of direct democracy argue that referendum outcomes may not be representative of the preferences of the population at large.
