m-bonacci metamaterial multilayers: location of the zero-average index bandgap edges

2009

We examine quasiperiodic multilayers arranged in m-bonacci sequences, which combine ordinary positiveindex materials and dispersive metamaterials with negative index in a certain frequency range. When the volume-averaged refractive index of the nonperiodic multilayer equals zero, the structure does not propagate light radiation and exhibits a forbidden band. We identify some analytical expressions to determine the upper and lower limits of the above zero-average refractive-index bandgap. We recognize that these limits are not explicitly dependent on the geometrical parameters of the stack of layers. © 2009 Optical Society of America. Fil: Monsoriu, J.A.. A transfer matrix method for the analysis of fractal quantum potentials

2005

The scattering properties of quantum particles on fractal potentials at different stages of fractal growth are obtained by means of the transfer matrix method. This approach can be easily adopted for project assignments in introductory quantum mechanics for undergraduates. The reflection coefficients for both the fractal potential and the finite periodic potential are calculated and compared. It is shown that the reflection coefficient for the fractal has a self-similar structure associated with the fractal distribution of the potential.

Interrogation of whispering-gallery modes resonances in cylindrical microcavities by backreflection detection

2009

The excitation of whispering-gallery-mode resonances of cylindrical microcavities, using narrow fiber tapers, produces simultaneously the excitation of spiral modes. The power coupled to the spiral modes leads to a significant broadening of the dips observed in the spectrum of light transmitted through the taper. We demonstrate that whispering-gallery modes resonances of cylindrical microcavities can also be interrogated by measuring the reflection spectrum. Unlike the dips observed in transmission, the peaks in the reflection spectrum are symmetric and narrower than the corresponding transmission dips.

Multi-frequency super-scattering from sub-wavelength graphene-coated nanotubes

2019

A cylindrical multilayered structure with three coupled graphene shells is shown to behave as a dual-band super-scatterer at mid-infrared frequencies. Under the 2D plasmonic nature of graphene material, multiple scattering resonances are attained in the deep subwavelength regime using an isotropic material. In the proposed structure, we efficiently exploit the existing three plasmonic resonances in each scattering channel. These resonances are tailored by dispersion engineering, which is simply displayed through the Bohr model applied to the associated planar structure. For the super-scatterer design, it is essential that the resonances of multiple channels coincide in a single frequency. H…

Asymptotic theory of resonant tunneling in quantum waveguides of variable cross-section

2008

Halkaisijaltaan muunnellun kvanttiaaltojohtimen kapenemat toimivat tehokkaina potentiaalivalleina elektronin pitkittäissuuntaiselle liikkeelle. Sarafanov kuvailee väitöskirjassaan asymptoottisesti elektroniaallon etenemistä kvanttiaaltojohtimessa, jossa on kaksi kapenemaa. Aaltoluvun k oletetaan olevan ensimmäisen ja toisen kynnysluvun välissä, jolloin vain sisään tuleva ja poismenevä aalto voivat edetä jokaisessa aaltojohtimen päässä äärettömyydessä.
