Suppression of phase ambiguity in digital holography by using partial coherence or specimen rotation

2008

In this paper we present two approaches for extracting the surface profile as well as obtaining 3D imaging of near field objects by usage of partial coherence and digital holography. In the first approach a light source with given temporal partial coherence is used to illuminate a near field object. The reflected light is interfered with the reference source. By computing the local contrast of the generated fringes one may estimate the 3D topography and the profile of the object. This approach extracts the 3D information from a single image, and its accuracy does not depend on triangulation angle like in fringe projection methods. The second approach is tomography based. There we illuminate…

Simulation of propagation characteristics of ultrasonic guided waves in fractured long bone

2008

Using ultrasonic guided waves (GW) to assess fractures in long bones has gained considerable attention. This paper focuses on using an improved hybrid boundary element method (HBEM) to analyze and calculate reflection coefficients (RC) and transmission coefficients (TC) of low-order GWs for cracks with different depth-to-width ratios (d/w) in fractured long bones. The results showed that the primary received modes, which include the transmitted and reflected modes, are the same as the incident modes. For some values of d/w, the TC of different GW always had local maxima at adjacent frequencies. For some other cracks with different d/w, most of the TC curves had local maxima of which frequen…

Towards a Modelization of the elusive Concept of Wisdom using Fuzzy Techniques

2012

After having been a term of reflection in philosophy as well as psychology for ages, the fascination with human wisdom finally reaches the realms of computer science. In comparison to the first philosophical definition attempts, that date back to Aristotle (384 BC – 322BC), the efforts in information science during the late 1980s seem quite recent. Nevertheless have there been astonishing new insights provided by cognitive science since those first formal modelizations were designed – findings that strongly suggest a reconsideration of our current formalization of wisdom in the computer science domain. We suggest to establish a new, integrated view on the concept of wisdom, using the insigh…

Reflecting on the PRET A Rapporter Framework Via a Field Study of Adolescents’ Perceptions of Technology and Exercise

2013

PRET A Rapporter (PRETAR) was developed to explicitly structure user-centered evaluation studies to ensure all necessary elements are individually and independently considered. Its creators see its benefit as twofold: for study design and in retrospective evaluations. We evaluate PRETAR’s potential by applying it retrospectively to one of our eHealth field studies in which we investigated the design requirements for mobile technologies that would support and motivate adolescents to exercise opportunistically. We also use PRETAR to evaluate the key literature for this eHealth study. This shows that typically the research methodology is under-reported. Then we document the study in terms of i…
