Localizing Global Solidarity: Humanitarian Aid in Lesvos
2021
The so-called “refugee crisis” in Lesvos, Greece provides a poignant example of situated, local suffering that has called for the coordination of global resources to provide relief. Some of the first to respond were local and international Citizen Initiatives for Global Solidarity (CIGS). While a growing role for CIGS has been interpreted as a call for more global involvement, arguments for the increased localization of relief efforts suggest the need for aid agents to maintain a reflexive awareness of the potential for an influx of outside assistance to disempower those most affected. We argue that barriers to implementing the localization of humanitarian aid can be better understood by po…
The Emotional Self: A Relational View (El sujeto emocional: un punto de vista relacional)
2023
Emotions are experiences that connect us to others in deep and meaningful ways, however, there is something about them that makes them, at the same time, the most intimate of our experiences. The way in which I understand the latter departs from the notions of privacy or interiority which are central to the debate on the asymmetry between the first and the third person. The notion of intimacy to which I allude here is linked, rather, to the experience of being vulnerable. As is well known, we can only feel an emotion for something we care about and, in this sense, every emotional experience is an experience in which we are exposed, that is, in which there is something at stake for us. From …
Socially phobic clients' self-descriptions, treatment progress and reflexivity in short-term cognitive-constructivist group psychotherapy
2017
The aim of the research was to get information about different kinds of clients with social phobia and their therapeutic progress in cognitive-constructivist group psychotherapy. The aim was also to offer relevant information to clinicians working with socially phobic clients on how they could help the progress of the successful therapeutic change process of socially phobic clients, especially in early phases of the therapy when clients are developing a reflexive stance toward their own problematic experiences. Study I supported the view that negative self-image is central to social phobia, but this ranged from total piteousness to relatively few negative feelings of insufficiency. Three su…

Nonlinear nystagmus processing causes torsional VOR nonlinearity.
2003
The eye movement component that rotates around the line of sight, i.e., the ocular torsion, is in many aspects different from horizontal and vertical eye movements. While ocular torsion is mediated only by reflexive pathways like the torsional vestibulo-ocular and optokinetic reflexes (TVOR and OKN, respectively), horizontal and vertical components are also subject to intentional control mechanisms that are mediated by the saccadic and the pursuit systems. Dynamic properties of torsional eye movements are also very distinct. While horizontal and vertical VOR components show a gain close to unity and a small neural integration leakage with a time constant around pi=30 s, the TVOR shows a sma…
Plato and Antisthenes in the Phaedo: A Reflexive Reading. Part One
2019
The purpose of this study is not so much to show the presence of Antisthenes in the dialogue, but rather to examine what Plato alludes to. The controversy over ideas between the two Socratics is historically very well-attested, as can already be seen in the Cratylus. Thus, it is reasonable to assume that this controversy must have affected Plato when he was writing a dialogue in which the importance of ideas and his new logic is undeniable. Hence, this paper will investigate the following question: what impact could Antisthenes’ denominative and definitory logic have on the equally denominative and definitory logic presented in the Phaedo given that the latter work in all probability preced…
Effects of water immersion on soleus neuromuscular parameters
2017
Aquatic rehabilitation is a widely used tool for injury prevention or rehabilitation. The underlying neuromuscular mechanisms during immersion are less known due to methodological issues. The following study main purpose to assess neuromuscular functions and muscle architecture changes within immersed condition. The physical properties of water to the human body are well understood, as well as its effect on the cardiorespiratory system. While the Hoffmann reflex, as a tool to assess neuromuscular changes on dry land is widely examined, it has been rarely used during immersion. The effect of water immersion on muscle behavior is also unknown. In this study control values were recorded in sit…
Reflexiones sobre la concurrencia de violencia económica en el contexto de familia : impacto y mecanismos para su neutralización
2021
Through this work we carry out a dissertation on the phenomenon of economic violence, as a manifestation of gender violence, in the family context, and, especially, from the perspective of the divorce framework. We will analyze the harmful effects that it produces, the damage that it triggers on the most basic and essential interests of the family, and its use as a control mechanism by the aggressors. In addition to a vision of the different mechanisms that, enshrined in our legal system, serve to distort it.
