La 'riforma' a Napoli: materiali per un capitolo di storia della ricezione

From 1774 to 1785, Naples hosted six different productions of Gluck's 'reform' operas: two of "Orfeo ed Euridice" (both in 1774, but in two different versions and venues), two of "Alceste" (in 1779 and 1785) and two of "Paride ed Elena" (in 1777 and 1779). In the first part, the article collects and discusses all the extant documents about these performances. The second part is a detailed study of the ideas of the Neapolitan theorists about Calzabigi and Gluck. The article demostrates that, even if some authors appreciated specific features of the 'reform', the Neapolitan musical culture was dominated by a more traditional operatic taste.

The first part of this essay explains the poetry features for music of abbot Francesco Buti from Narni. The second one contains the modern edition of poems for Li Fiori, a group of polyphonic “villanelle” set to music and published in 1632 by the German nobleman Girolamo Kapsperger. Performed in a private concert in Rome, probably under the patronage of Cardinal Francesco Barberini, this work is the unique example of a music collection of 16th-century Italy entirely devoted to flowers. To many readers of Orlando Furioso, Ariosto appears to be essentially disinterested in religious matters, a poet who thinks religion and morality should be kept away from literary creation. However, in this paper I will argue that Ariosto, far from being a-religious, or even un-Christian, was deeply engaged with contemporary religious debates.
