Social Workers’ Reflections on Forced Migration and Cultural Diversity : Towards Anti-Oppressive Expertise in Child and Family Social Work
2021
Social work in Finland, like in many other countries, has faced various challenges after the large scale of forced migration in 2015. Although working with migrants is not a new area in social work, the exceptionally large amount of asylum seekers in the Finnish society caused a need for improved social work expertise. Our article deals with Finnish social work practitioners’ reflections on multicultural, multilingual and transnational issues with a client group, which is in a vulnerable situation after forced or other forms of migration. The practitioners participating in our study have either attended a specializing education of child, youth and family social work or taken part in peer gr…

Przejawy zjawiska parentyfikacji wśród dzieci ukraińskich na skutek migracji i uchodźstwa
2022
W kolejnej części tekstu przedstawiono metodologię eksploracyjnych badań jakościowych – wywiad pogłębiony (wśród ukraińskich matek) i wywiad ekspercki (wśród terapeutów zaangażowanych w pomoc ukraińskim rodzinom). Przeprowadzono też analizę porównawczą omawianego kontekstu z wybranymi przypadkami parentyfikacji wśród migrantów w Europie. Badania wskazały d…
Small agency and precarious residency in Afghan refugee families
2020
This chapter examines agency and ways of enduring suffering in Afghan families in a small Finnish town. Three stories, where the mothers and children have lived in Finland for some years already, but the fathers have arrived during the 2015 large-scale migration, are presented and analysed. Ethnographic methods are used in enquiring how family members endure suffering when they are faced with the threat of deportation of a family member. Our results show that fathers’ precarious residency has an impact on family members’ agency. First, the informants were enduring alone, and thus the social element, being able to share one’s struggles of enduring, was missing. Second, it was not only one ty…
Introduction: Mediterranean Movements and the Reconfiguration of the Military-Humanitarian Border in 2015
2018
This article deals with the transformations occurred in the government of refugees in the Mediterranean since 2013, when the military-humanitarian operation Mare Nostrum was launched by the European Union. The paper analyses how military and humanitarian practices are entangled in governing refugees and develops the notion of military-humanitarianism. The Mediterranean borderzone has undergone radical reconfigurations over the last few years. Particularly, new technologies of control for strengthening the role of the Mediterranean Sea as a pre-frontier of Europe have been put in place. The production and the declaration of a "refugee crisis" in Europe has contributed to producing important …
Europe and refugees : 1938 and 2015-16
2018
Ahonen attempts to provide some historical contextualization for the refugee crisis that has dominated much of European public and political debate since 2015. He draws comparisons between the crisis-ridden present and the decade of the previous century that was particularly laden with anticipation of disaster and doom: the 1930s. More specifically, his article explores parallels in public discussions of refugees by European political leaders and media commentators in 1938, on the one hand, and 2015–16, on the other. The coverage of 1938 focuses on the Evian Conference, organized to discuss the problem of Jewish refugees from Nazi Germany, while the analysis of 2015–16 concerns the period f…
AYLAN E COLONIA. DALLA GUERRA AI MIGRANTI AL RESPINGIMENTO DEI REFUGEES
2017
This contribution aims to shed light on the specific mechanism of migrant categorization implemented by the so-called «Hotspot approach», which was launched by the EU Agenda on Migration in May 2015. This approach is here envisaged as a response to the current changes in the composition of migration towards Europe. Provisions contained in EU and Italian policy documents are compared with concrete practices enacted on the ground by investigating two case studies: the initial opening of the Hotspot at Milo, in Trapani, and the first months of functioning of the Hotspot on Lampedusa. The empirical research covers the period between the last months of 2015 and the beginning of 2016. The short-t…

As it’s facing this challenge, the EU is constantly seeking solutions designed to restore the proper functioning of the system and prevent its collapse.
